So, PS2 is no longer supported?Follow

If you use the PS2 still, for some crazy reason, you will be unable to make it into the new expansion? Or can you, via DL?

I just want to know if my HDD has become and official paper weight or not. I have not played FFXI in a year but wanted to know... as I am curious about the new expansion. Thanks.

So far we are under the belief that unless you're in Japan or otherwise can obtain the Japanese hardware, PS2 players are gonna be left out in the cold for Adoulin.

It's a distribution thing more than a localization thing. I bet they have hard numbers like only maybe 300-500 NA players still being on PS2, but ten times that in Japan. Putting together PS2 pressing and casing for five hundred people, tops, even if they shipped it directly to them from a web store, is more likely under any manufacturing minimum. You don't plunk down to make no less than five thousand of something for five hundred people.

Plus, nobody in North America or Europe is likely to start on PS2. Japan might still be a little crazy about PS2 availability (the network adapter and hard-drive are still available, I think third-party though), but the demand will just never reach the minimum production over here.

Exclusively? Not just using it for dualbox or mules or overnight bazaaring? Like PS2 is their only option and they wont get the expansion on another system to play it?

Five hundred is a stretch.

Start asking around. I can think of one person on my server that is exclusively on PS2 and this affects him. I'm about to start a fund to buy him a goddamn laptop so he'll shut up about it.

They're not actually dropping PS2 support, so it's not like anything is really going to change. PS2 limitations are as alive and well as ever for the foreseeable future. Don't get me wrong. I wish as much as anyone that we could get the full, modern PC MMO experience, but it ain't gonna happen with XI.

I might add, I had about 2-3 friends who played on ps2. One vanished into thin air; the other two are swapping to the Xbox and the PC, tho one is planning on using PS2 when he doesn't have to do Seekers stuff. Me, since I swapped a while ago, PS2 is only for my last ditch macro backup...

So yeah. It's proly more common than you think. I only knew about the guy who is now swapping to PC b/c I had to unstick him about 5-20 times for CS's in Wings of the Goddess.(Square has really dropped the ball with PS2 lately; freezing all over. I had to log in for him a lot and tell him to watch that CS on Youtube.) I'm guessing a combo of not that many play on PS2 anymore + Sony ending support for the PS2 is the reason they won't release it here.

PS2 never lagged for me, yet no matter how good of a PC I use nor what settings I use, it always lags. The game is designed for PS2, it will always run best on PS2

Are you just trolling? PC is superior in every single way - graphically, performance-wise, customization (window size and such). I have the ps2 version as a backup as well and the last time I loaded it up just to pull down updates, I thought my eyes were going to literally start bleeding. I couldn't imagine going back to such slow performance and terrible graphics after seeing the beauty the PC version of this game unlocks. I hopped on the airship the other day and could see the holla crag in the distance, crystal clear. Magnificent. On the ps2 all of that was just a blur of what looked like some water and land masses.

It's actually pretty damn impressive for a game developed a decade ago.

I can't comment on PS2, but for PC, I believe some graphic cards have issues with the "glow" effect from avatars, confluxes, warp points, etc. hence lag.

With out draw distance and on my crappy vista laptop it run and looks better then the ps2 by a long shot. All I can say is get a better graphics card or find the right drivers.

You don't even need draw distance or registry changes any more. SE altered the FFXI config to permit up to standard 1080p for PCs outputting to HDTVs.

So nope, no game alterations.

The PS2 version may run a bit more smoothly in high lag situations, but everything I've seen and heard from people who have played on both is that the PS2 version looks so atrocious that they'd be more than willing to take the minimal hit on how the game runs so that it doesn't look so terrible.

My first character was strictly played on a PS2. I never had a single issue with how the game ran. Not knowing anything else, I thought it was a visually beautiful game. A while after I quit the first time, I returned to create a new character, this time on a crappy Dell pc. Despite how bad a pc I was using, I was amazed at the quality of the graphics that I had been missing. I've since upgraded my pc, and with that, the graphics have improved even more. The game has its moments where it lags a bit, but I believe the PS2 would suffer the same problems.

That doesn't even show how you can't read names from further than twenty feet away either. They become a blurry mosaic of letter-ish glyphs at roughly spitting distance and become morse code beyond that.

Just for clarity, Catwho's "PS2" screenshot is still PC version. It has the improved name text (easily noted by the horrible kerning that was later fixed) and, presumably, macro bars, and that's why a screenshot can be taken with the menus visible (as if TParty and Distance plugins didn't give it away to start). PS2 is still worse than that, and I would posit that the render (background) resolution should actually be much lower.

Well, I beg to differ. The PS2 version has always looked and run great for me. PC has always been atrocious in comparison. Looks and runs much worse. And this is coming from someone who started during the first day of PC release in NA, then upgraded to PS2, then "upgraded" (downgraded) to a new PC. Also played on Xbox360 at some point, which was as terrible as PC. Nothing will ever replicate the PS2 quality IMO

Yeah the PC version is worse if you use on board video(sometime even this is better) or don't take the 5 to 10 mins to find the right drivers.

That's not the PS2 version, so your point is invalid

It's the same resolution PS2 runs on. As Raelix said, the actual PS2 game looks a lot worse - my PC has a very nice video card these days and can spin the colors and the images smoothly. That resolution also really needs to be blown up to 24 inches wide, pixelation and all, to accurately represent what the PS2 version really looks like.

For me, it's about how much more screen real estate there is on the Xbox and PC versions. I can see a lot more of the world than what's right in front of my face, and it isn't covered up with a chat log.

FFXI's graphics have aged rather gracefully on the PC version, because SE even permitted the adjustable 3D background resolution and screen size resolution on the Windows version. If we were all stuck playing at PS2 resolution, this game would have died after CoP.

Dat resolution! Pretty much all posts I've seen from Zelduh are full of crap... there's no actual way you can argue PS2 looks better. When you 'downgraded' to a PC I think you must've accidentally tried to play on a potato (probably with on-board graphics) and got confused. I won't bother wasting my virtual breath on this, though. I've seen you deny things that are plain to see before and I've no doubt you'll do it again. I've never encountered a situation where my FPS has dropped below maybe.. 28-27 at a push? And that's with all effects on, to the highest quality, in a full alliance, stood next to another full alliance, both of which are fighting mobs and doing their thing AND DrawDistance hiked up. I'm not ragging on PS2, I loved my PS2, but you're seriously trying to argue that hardware from 13 years ago makes this game look/perform better than a modern PC? Mmk, bro. Whatever you say.

Can we get a party of six bards on Zelduh's server to follow him around and spam AoE buffs on each other next to him?

That was the worst thing about PS2: when it got too many effects happening at the same time (yes, I tried to disable what I could, but the "basic" effects like a bard spell landing can't be disabled) it would go into 0.1 FPS mode. As in each frame taking multiple seconds. And inputs (joypad, keyboard) were only checked between frames. Bard spells were a particular problem because (unlike Protectra/Shellra) the animations showed up on all targets at the exact same moment.

One time this happened when a bunch of NPCs were fighting each other next to the tags NPC in Eldieme S in a campaign battle, and I got KO right under them. About 5 minutes later after the battle ended, my "Reraise Yes/No?" finally popped up.

lolCampaign on PS2 cannot be tolerated nowadays, a recent issue possibly relevant to this. Go into a crowd and you will risk moving in 1 frame every 5 to 20 or more seconds.

Not everyone cares about graphics lol, Plus, you're supposed to play FFXI for PS2 on a TV... you can't really compare a screenshot of it to a screenshot of the PC version. It's really not that bad. People are just looking at it through reverse nostalgia goggles, like for example now FF7 looks terrible, but back in the day everyone raved about the amazing graphics.

Obviously the PS2 version is playable enough to be played by the majority in Japan, and a decent amount of people in NA who don't care to have the fanciest resolution the second it comes out
(My current monitor's resolution is 1028x786. Deal with it. And I have all features of Windows turned off so it looks like a default grey Windows 95. Some people like minimalism)

Highly doubt that the majority still plays on PS2, but enough that it it would make it profitable to release Seekers on ps2 and enough retailers there are still willing to stock and sell new ps2 titles. Better yet they checked the ps2 option on that goofy little survey cause they feel some miss placed attachment or in the hopes if enough did that SE would take another look into a port to the ps3.

Most JPs don't own computers because their cell phones do most of that typical work, and any real use is likely at an office.

I played on ps2 from 2004 to near the end of 2009. I did all manner of endgame and all missions up to that point on ps2. It was workable, though in some zones suffered greatly, such as in sea where you risked getting black screened in the palace while fighting ix'aerns. Campaign, when it was popular, was a very stuttery event. Usually a slideshow anywhere there was a ton of mobs and npcs, and every time campaign was over felt like ps2 would explode.

Most of what you guys keep calling "lag" is stutter. Lag means your input is occurring on screen far out of sync with you whereas stuttering means you're getting a slideshow for a game. PS2 had very low input lag, was always very quick to respond and quick to fill up the screen with models, but stuttered like hell once a lot of models got shoved on screen. Like port jeuno now or the 200+ people in dragon's aery days of old and tanking fafnir. I had to do things very carefully since the stuttering made watching the fight much harder. Had to preemptively do most of my actions since you could count the time between frames being rendered. And that's with all effects turned off as much as possible, most things filtered, and in 1st person view where I couldn't even see the damn dragon due to being crowded so damn hard by everyone else not fighting it.

Then the NPC locks came in toward 2008-2009. About 1/5 of all npcs I talked to would cause a dialog lock, usually if they were a vender, and anywhere in the game. There'd be no dialog in the chat log upon activating them, and all control and movement would be frozen. Could only do say/ls/pt/tell chat and that was it. No way to free myself from the lock without resetting ps2. Was hell getting through some missions, or just npcing junk in jeuno since there was a high chance of getting dialog locked, and got very high toward end of 2009 (almost every npc in jeuno dialog locked). I got fed up with it and went to my laptop.

Never had another dialog lock. Never had another black screen. Game just worked. I was a happy cat, even if playing at 800x600 and reduced details since my old laptop sucked. Even used the same usb keyboard I had hooked up to my ps2 lol. And yes, I reinstalled the game a few times on the ps2 trying to solve this dialog lock issue. Nothing helped.

For those of you who have never played on PS2:

Here's a real PS2 screenshot with log, taken though a TV card.

And..the trouble is with PS2 is not graphics or anything; it used to be the most stable version, but not anymore. It freezes loads on Wings of the Goddess cs's, it freezes even sometimes when you're using the tele guy to go to whitegate. Ugh! And that's also why I still use a controller, that's the only remmant of the PS2 for me. Smiley: cool. Well other than backing my macros up to the the ps2 for a last ditch backup.

So when did the locks and freezes start? I remember it happening a lot but not so much, early on, that I was like, ZOMG! I played on the PS2 until 2008-9 so, I can't recall. I do know WotG did freeze and teleporting started to get bad at a point but not until later. I was 100% a telewhore for a while and never had a problem until later. I did a million Sky events, all CoP, and ToAu missions on my PS2. I even recorded the final CoP fight and CS, with a digital recorder, of course.

Maybe when the HDD started to reach a certain capacity, more RAM being accessed at once with less storage? IDK.

I can't believe you are even still in this thread arguing that Ps2 graphics are better. I can tell you exactly why when you loaded it on PC it looked exactly the same as Ps2 - because about five years ago by default it installed with the exact same background resolution. You left it at 512x512 and that's why it looked the same as the Ps2. All you needed to do was change that to 1024x1024 - even that minor tweak that was available in the menu even back then - would have made the game 100 times better. And if that wasn't enough, you could have headed out to these very forums and looked for a thread Kaolian used to have on how to further tweak the registry. No need for third party add ons at all (though I'm definitely NOT against them).

But hey, you obviously are happy on your inferior, aging hardware so who am I to try to convince you with facts?

Check this out - On my way to Sandy!

That's what I was talking about with being able to see the crag in the distance. Why don't you hop on the airship and take a screen shot of what you can see on your Ps2?

It's really amazing. I don't even get that kind of clarity in the distance on WoW - even changing farclip up into the thousands.

I think all of the xboxs sold in Japan are people who wanted to play FFXI on it instead of PS2.

I'm not saying the graphics are any better lol -- FOR ITS TIME it was amazing on the PS2. (Read; for its time.) I am first to admit that the PC version on modern pcs beats it graphic wise, and I even have a crappy video card atm. (Crappy as I get artifacts like lines and stuff. I'm hoping I can get better once I rebuild the PC and get windows 7.) At the time I was heavy playing on PS2, I had no issues other than some pretty serious lag in dynamis (it's why if you ever check my whm, you'll notice I load up on -cure speed gear; it's a habit now and I like fast cures, but back in the PS2 days in dyn it meant saving people's necks b/c i was lagging a tad more than I liked) I think the freezing really badly started (tho there was a mention of freezes with the paid tele taru in Aht Urghan two years earlier in update notes; I wasn't using paid taru so it never caught me) when Wings of the Goddess came out. Almost EVERY cs in that expansion can freeze/lock up a PS2. It went downhill from there.

Now you freeze if you face the wrong way on the guys that tele you to Aht Urghan, you freeze on Wings of the Goddess CS's, and I've even heard of freezes on maws. Bleeeh ><. That's why PS2 is just the home of my emergency macro backup now.

Oh and that screen I did? The comp that had the tv card in it was on its last legs really, and was too old to play FFXI, but as long as the PS2 was doing the muscle work, it'd display the graphics fine with the help of the tv card. ^^

One more thing, if you guys wanna know how long I was playing PS2 FFXI; this is from the PS2 US beta (Yes, that long) up until about 2 years ago when me and my brother and my mom had a big fat argument over the whole thing. So you can say I'm kinda..Experienced? with the whole issue, I guess? But yeah, when it first came out, I'd say the PS2 version was the preferred version if you didn't want the game to crash out due to no windower and due to hitting the windows keys. (Yes..that was the case. You either had to run a program called IHateThisKey or gtfo!)
