Hey all,

Thinking about dusting off ffxi. Questions, though.

Has the game got to the point where you need a R/M/E in order to get invited to do endgame as a DD? I'm not asking if R/M/E is the best, I'm asking if nobody will invite me regardless of what's best.

If you don't need R/M/E, are my options still limited to OAT DRK and Super Hagun SAM? Is one a better choice than the other? I would prefer a low barrier to entry, I already have my Super Hagun, but I could make a OAT GS if I needed to.

Thanks in advance.

You don't need one, but it doesn't hurt either. These days, some VW alliances have wised up and if you say "no Empy but capped scythe skills" they'll take you over the Empy guy anyway since you probably know wtf you're doing.

Someone who asks for R/M/E only is a moron, hands-down. Precisely for the reasons of OAT GS and Kantonotachi as you mentioned, but also OAT polearm for DRG (and if they endorse empy polearm, just blacklist them forever).

If they don't accept you with OAT GS and a proper hitbuild, they're the sort of leader whose group wipes to Qilin. True story.

So if they don't invite you because you're not using R/M/E on DRK, SAM, or DRG... You're probably better off not wasting your time with people using such a braindead metric or even demanding inferior weapons.

Thanks for all this info. As near as I can tell, my options are:

1) superhagunshohaspamurai
2) OAT drk
3) OAT drg

Any in particular you would recommend? Are they all more or less even? I'm talking zerg here (which is most fights at the moment). I'd like to be able to contribute and if one is a decent chunk ahead of the other two I'd prefer to work on that one.

Thanks in advance.

Ok I have a comeback question as well... First off I guess, since I've been away from the game for 5 years... What is R/M/E? (I'm guessing rare, exclusive, and something else lol) Second question, I have a friend that is dying to play FFXIV, but has never experienced FFXI... He wanted to play the game for a little while leading up to FFXIV... So my question is, if I come back to play with him, and I don't have the abbysea collections, ( I only have WOTG, TOAU) when I'm not playing with him will I be able to level up anywhere, and are there still people doing WOTG missions, and TOAU missions? Are there still people partying in TOAU areas, or even maybe some new WOTG areas?

My dark and blu are 75 with max merits, and wouldn't mind taking them to 99 just for fun, but are all the parties in the new expansion areas? Will I have a hard time finding fun if I don't have those expansions. Only plan on playing for a month or two just until the FFXIV beta starts. Thanks for your answers, I really appreciate it. He really wants to experience it, but doesn't want me to pay to come back to only play with him, and wants me to get my money's worth so to speak.

I didn't answer it all for a reason, because I'm not wholly sure how to answer the rest. I've been playing for a few months only and despite having taken a few jobs to 99 and messing around in abyssea quite a bit I haven't messed around with mission lines etc.

And, having all the addons and xpacs I cannot comment on what it'd be like without them, because at 75+ (sometimes sooner) I've always been in abyssea, sorry.

Edit: If you wanted to know if it's easy/possible to get to 99 without abyssea the answer is very much yes. People still regularly pt burning pages in Bostaunieux Oubliette on leeches. I think it maxes at something like 4200 exp per page (9 leeches). You can easily make it to 99 there and get merits as well. That being said, I still think an average (and especially an above average) pt in La Theine abyssea doing worms would net a better exp yield.

You can level up. People party down in the sewers under sandoria, can get to cap down there. You can also solo campaign (sometimes others will be there) and get exp that way... missions etc are a bit more annoying to get people for but people do, in fact, do them. Realistically, anything that doesn't require three people to enter (assault/salvage/meeble etc) you can probably duo.

However, I think you're missing out on some of the most fun content available by not having any abyssea. You will also be missing some key stepping stone gear (AF3 +1/+2 is quite decent and a lot of it is fairly easy to get). I am not sure if you can do voidwatch without abyssea add ons, I think you can but not sure....

Anyway, given that the ultimate collection was just for sale for $5 keep an open mind about getting all the add ons. Also, there is a new expansion coming in march, including two new jobs, Geomancer and Rune Fencer... don't know if you know that... so it may be worthwhile to wait until it comes out and just get the ultimate edition with all the add ons at that time.

I would like to jump back in here with the question I had before, hoping for a bit of guidance. As far as I can tell, the three non-R/M/E DD endgame options are limited to:

OaT Resolution DRK
OaT Stardiver DRG
Super Hagun Shoha SAM

Are they roughly even for endgame zergs or does one pull ahead from the others? Is there another option I don't know about?

Any insight at all is appreciated; thanks in advance.

DRK.

Revising this to Kanto SAM. OAT DRK requires you to do math and not listen to Rag owners.
