hi people,

Trying to get a xbox 360 controller working on ffxi, so far i have got it working on the playonline menus but i cannot get it to work in game at all. In the final fantasy config it seems to work fine there but in game not at all.

Any help to set it up would be apreciated.

Is this an Xbox controller on PC, or on an actual Xbox?

Assuming PC since the xbox has a default.

There's two places to enable controller. One in Playonling config and one in FFXI config. You want to enable in FFXI config and you can set the buttons from there.

If you have it working in the POL menus, you can get it working in the FFXI game. There are literally two different configuration menus, one for POL (which it sounds like you already set up) and one for FFXI.

If you have it installed through Steam, you can just Launch the game, and when it prompts you what to launch, select select Launch Final Fantasy XI config utility. There is a button there for Gamepad Settings. You need to click that, and then click the checkbox next to Enable Gamepad. Then you can configure the buttons, but as someone else said, the triggers won't work because of Microsoft's drivers.

My recommendaton is the Logitech F710. It's wireless (and I mean true wireless with a minimal usb nub), it's comfy, and just works out of the box. Set it for direct input to configure for FFXI, and it has an automatic setting to identify as an xbox controller with all the correct defaults for other games that might use it. You really can't go wrong with it.

I"ve been having some frustration w/ controllers for PC lately as well.
I tried the Logitech game pads, and they work alright, but they tend to fail after 4~6 months. Something int he internal wiring. I"m not sure but they just don't function at all, like they are shorted out.
Recently I tried some cheap ones from Radioshack which.. I'm not remembering the name lately... but the buttons on those cave in after 2~6 weeks. then they just keep firing off whenever someone breathes nearby.

Has anyone found a good reliable controller for pc which doesn't break?

If this helps Xilk; I've had good luck with a dual shock 2 on a Super Dual Box Pro (you can buy that adapter on Play-Asia, accept no substitutes. Well, unless you can get a certain holy grail of a adapter that radio shack once sold; good luck finding that on ebay tho :/) and my brother has had very good luck with a Nyko Airflow. (He drops his on the floor and steps on it sometimes so you can tell it's tough; the pc is on the floor. I recommend you go to best buy or some store like that and try feel before you buy tho. Different people are different, so what me and my brother like you may hate!) His has lasted with rough handling about 8 years and counting.

Also with the logitech ones; I heard the problem is they have no strain relief(that's why yours broke). If you don't wrap some electrical tape around the spot where the wire comes out of the controller, they WILL break after a year. No ifs, ands or buts. It's the wire breaks inside and then..well. Dead controller.

I personally use a wireless 360 controller (with out-of-print official MS USB wireless receiver), but my wife doesn't like it because she got really used to the PS2 controller.

I ended up buying her a FFXIV branded wired USB controller that's pretty good - it's basically a PS2 controller clone with slightly longer "wing" handles. Long cord, slightly lower quality buttons and d-pad (but pretty nice analog sticks). Has some sort of macro feature that I never tried. I was impressed enough with it that after it got stolen, I bought another one. Currently under $20 - US Amazon link" http://www.amazon.com/Snakebyte-Final-Fantasy-XIV-Controller-000009/dp/B0046ZQ022/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1359568106&sr=8-1&keywords=ffxiv+controller

I use a Logitech F710 wireless controller.

It has an Xbox controller emulation mode (XInupt), and what they call DirectInput. Using the DirectInput actually has the triggers working correctly as shoulder buttons, just like on PS2/Xbox360.

I've had a similar issue as the OP is describing (if I'm understanding right). I have an older logitiech controller that has worked fine with ffxi on every computer except my new Alienware. The controller works fine in the POL menu and both the POL and FFXI configs. but wont do anything in game. I've heard FFXI will only work right if you have only 1 controller plugged in, and the lights on alienwares can affect the use of controllers for XI. I was never able to get mine to work right with it ,but it does work for FFXIV, so I just continue to play XI on my laptop instead. Hope something here helps OP.

As I have a USB mouse and keyboard would it be worth trying with them uplugged. Could they possibly interfere with the Xbox controller?

I play on an alienware m14x currently, and played on m11x as well as the older m15x. I never ran into anything like what you are describing. I do know that if the controller is not active at the time you load the game (like, you didn't press any buttons until you are already looking at your character) FFXI won't recognize it, but never had an issue with running the lighting and the controller.

OP, can you confirm whether you have it enabled in the FFXI config screen? Screen shots would help.

Have it all enabled in, in both configs, FFXI and the playonline configs, ill try loading without touching anything till actually in game see if that works

That's not what I was suggesting at all. I was suggesting making sure that the controller is on and functional before loading the game. Sometimes if I don't have my logitech communicating with its USB nub before loading, the game won't pick up that the controller is attached.

Are you using any third party programs with FFXI? (Is that ban still in effect on even mentioning the word here? lolable btw)

I've never heard of it working in the actual FFXI config but not working in the game.

Tip: Forum Search

Installing XBCD drivers should force the triggers to work on a wired xbox360 controller. I believe it doesn't work for wireless controllers, but have never verified it since I use a keyboard.

If, for whatever reason, the XBCD drivers fail to work, you can map the triggers with xpadder.
