Well. I knew id end up back here before long. Took over 6 years. but hey, better now then never.

Im sure alot has changed in the game. i have a rough idea on whats going on, but its very rough. I havent played since the economy went to hell in 06.
I guess my main questions would be. how does levelling work now. is it the same? do people solo? or is it still party based. And if it is solo.. im curious on the time it takes. Im in no rush to level and dont mind the grind, but am still curious.

Then there is server population. But i think ive read the servers are close to the same now for the most part.
But i do recall years ago that is has always been hard for new players to get into a groove in FFXI. Is this still the case? Since i would be starting from level 1 again.
This has always been my most fav mmo. Ive played very many of them, and ive always missed this 1 the most. the people, the sense of accompaniment when something got finished. And the music.no game compares in any of these. ANd that is why i hope to be able to return and stay around this time.

Thanks for the help =)

The game has changed dramatically, so while it is definitely worth giving it another shot, also keep in mind that it's not the same game you once played.

Leveling, for the most part, is done solo and, more commonly, through alliances. Leveling speed is now ridiculous and can be done in a month even if you're not really trying too hard. This was changed for several reasons, but you point out the main one: to keep new players from falling behind.

There are differences between server population and attitude, but joining a linkshell from day 1 is much more important. People on this forum will probably give you a few options.

Finally, the game also has a new expansion being released in March, so it might be worth joining now to be up to date for new content.

Solo.. well wow. Thats a change for sure.
Well, ill try to read up on how it goes. And try to find a questing guild of some sorts. Since in 2006 there was a pretty straight forward way of levelling while in a party. area A. to area B. then to C. or D. etc.

With soloing being the way now ill guess that also has changed.

Most people level through Grounds of Valor alliances.

The standard leveling path through GoV is Gusgen Mines 10-30+, Crawlers Nest 30ish-65ish, then Bostaunieux Oubliette 65+. Zeruhn is an alt 65+ I personally never use it, but your server might be different.

With Gusgen you'll be level capped under 27. Crawlers Next under 55/57 (I forget) and the other two are uncapped. IMO the exp rate you get in Gusgen (Which is like 10k-15k/hour after you cap your exp per page) is about what you can pull solo (Maybe less *shurgs*) just without the skill ups.

Well, game is downloading, and watching some newbie vids on youtube.
But in the process.. there are a few more questions. Which , im hoping the videos are covering, but just in case.,

Travel. mainly to get to Jueno. i recall airship passes, kahzam keys. sub job quests. And all that jazz. ive read the sub job quest is different. only in need of a skull, but i dont remember where this turned in. And are there still air ship passes making travel easier?

Nothing has been removed from the game, so old transportation methods still work.

Along with the new changes, npcs associated with different events will now warp you to different locations, similar to outpost warps.
The warps for Abyssea are the easiest to unlock as it simply involves talking to npcs and traveling to easily accessible locations.
More found on Abyssea here http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Abyssea
You'll want to at least complete the "Getting Started" section of the page ASAP.

Super. Well, ill read into that as well without over doing everything and having FFXI overload. but i do have 10 hours until these updates are done so im sure i can take my time and look and see what servers are out there since i still have no idea where to plant myself. :)

But thanks for the info.

The Aby warps do no good until you get Cruor. Easy to get once you take part in parties in any Abyssea zone. Find a linkshell that will let you leech to help you start and there are a few quest that reward cruor.

You do still need the three items for subjob quest, that hasnt been changed. Some things have been, such as 1 testimony will let you fight maat three times instead of once. I made a post in a thread that you might find helpful, heres the link:

I came back after being AFK sense 2007. At first it was very overwhelming, just the amount of little thing to get done ( sub job quest, kazam keys, missions lots of missions, all the limit breaks and fame) again. LB really slowed down my way to 99 not very long but it did. One big change is jobs under 99, don't seem to matter much, if its not 99 or on its way to 99 there is no point to it. Also the lack of lower level gear, AH is like a ghost town, very little under 75. So lots of people show up naked or in level 1 gear to low lvl party's. Its kinda funny and sad at the same time. FFXI was always about gearing yourself well no matter what level you were. Now you level so fast no one cares what gear you have, well until 99. Any way the game is still fun , i'm loving it. If you choose Sylph look me up i would be happy to help you get into the swing of things.

I suppose it could be hard to play while also being omniscient about other players being AFK over the course of a whole year.

Just to give you a little update on traveling;

Instant Warp scrolls now only cost 10 conquest points, so any amount of solo low lvl will basicly give you free warp forever.

Later on (after lvl 30 and your first abyssea party to get Cruor, the currency in abyssea), the main focus is not traveling to, but from, Jeuno. Abyssea NPC there can warp you to Buburimu, Valkurm Dunes, Konschtat Highlands, La Theine, Tahrongi canyon etc etc so it's very easy to get around for "free".

Even later more options opens up with Voidwatch warps but that's endgame content you can look up at wiki if you want to.

To be honest I can't remember the last time I used an airship, or a teleport for that matter. Insta-travel-NPCs is the new toy in FFXI.

Well, that helps knowing that. Its hard not to be overwelmed..thats for sure. Still trying to see what job to go. And its looking lik blm. And damn. expensive. hoping to tackle the aspir quest a bit when the servers are up. Just so much to do. And working on a battle plan is a bit much. thinking of getting rdm and blm to atleast 18, then hope i can find help for this sub job quest. But from what ive reading it wont be easy to gather help for that but i guess i can hope.

Should save you several hours of updating, at least.

A very comprehensive list with all sorts of guides and info for returning players. Discussion follows, good place to ask questions as well. Along with the two stickies in this Alla forum you shouldn't be bored while you wait for downloads.

Its a one time thing. You can only give the hat to one character.

Asura isn't bad but you'll want a shell. That will help you more than anything. What's your game name?

Asura's fine. By the way no one noted this but no one hangs out in the starter cities anymore really so don't let the fact that they are quiet make you think the server is dead
