New player need advice :: World of Warcraft

Im new to FFxi and was wondering what would be a good class to start out as to make gil and be able to solo and group i like DPS more than anything any help would be appreciated

There twenty, soon to be twenty two, jobs to play as. You are not stuck playing just one job and in this game you will want a number of subs available so play them all a bit see what you like.

DPS, starting go war or mnk. Those will be your best choices until you unlock subjobs and from there play them all a bit to see what you like. THF for farming, sub DNC for soloing or NIN.

Yeah War or THF are good starting jobs, relatively cheap to level. I think THF is one of the best jobs to first take to 99 because if you get your Treasure Hunter gear there is a decent amount of demand for what you can do in terms of loot. War is more of a damage dealer though. Thf can do some respectable-ish damage but it doesn't get invited really to deal damage. War you'll find useful for proccing in abyssea.
