What exactly is a 'Pet' when it comes to 'Pet:' gear stats?Follow

When a piece of gear gives "Pet: xxx" stats it obviously applies to BST 'pets', but does it apply to the other types of 'companions' jobs can have, ie. Wyverns, Puppets, and Avatars?

Seeing as how some pieces with "Pet" stats can be equipped by DRG, SMN and PUP it would seem intuitive it does, but then again these pieces can also be worn by jobs that don't have 'companions' so that per se doesn't mean anything.

Unless it specifically says "avatar", "puppet" or "wyvern", Pet gear is considered to be for both BST, DRG, SMN and PUP.

There is no category specifically for BST themselves that excludes others. The only time SE does do this, is when they exclude the name from the wearable category.

As Kojiro said, unless the gear specifies what job it is for, be it by the job(s) capable of equipping it or by specifying "Avatar", "Wyvern", or "Automaton", that gear will affect any kind of pet. For example, the Moepapa Stone, which gives Pet: Haste +5%, is can be equipped by Beastmaster, Summoner, Dragoon, and Puppetmaster, and will give the pets of those jobs Haste +5%.

As for those gear pieces that can be equipped by jobs that don't natively have pets, remember that, outside of Dragoon's Wyvern, you have access to pets in some form if you sub those jobs. You are capable of using Charm with /Bst, and you can call out Avatars and Automatons as /Smn and /Pup, respectively. That and Square Enix tends to add jobs to gear in bulk, even if the stats for that gear may only be suited for one job. Beastmaster, for example, is oftentimes added to the same gear that Warrior is added to, so unless it's a JSE or JSE-esque piece, usually a piece of gear added that is good for Beastmaster will probably also have Warrior on it just because of SE's penchant for doing that.

BST, SMN, and PUP can all be subbed and still potentially make use of a pet. /BST is limited to charms, and /SMN and /PUP are limited to gimpy half-level pets, but they still technically can have pets!

And there's BRD with Virelai too, but that practically doesn't even count. That song really only exists to give a handful of BRD NMs the ability to charm *us*.

I've often wondered if this gear affects adventuring fellows.

I don't think it does. They run under a different set of rules. There's a specific set of gear that affects fellows, however, and it clearly states as much.

No, Adventuring Fellows don't count as pets and can't be affected by Pet: gear. They count closer to being Party members more than anything else, since you're able to cast buffs on them like you would another player, and they take up space in a party like they were a party member (If you have 5 players and an NPC, the NPC will leave once a 6th person is added to the party). I'm not 100% sure if things like Sphere will affect your Adventuring Fellow, but I'm sure using Toci's Harness while the NPC is set to Soothing Healer would let you find out.

It doesn't. The fellow's HP bar is shown on the screen similarly to that of a pet's, but as far as I know that's the only similarity.

1) Fellows are targeted differently from pets (specifically, the targeting identifier <ft> is used to target your fellow, and can be used to target ordinarily "party-only" spells on them; e.g. /ma "Refresh" <ft>)
2) The fellow actually takes up a space in the party despite not being listed as a party member. If at any point the party has more than six player characters + active (called) fellows in it, all summoned fellows in the party will immediately dismiss themselves.
3) Perhaps the most significant aspect separating them from pets -- the game ordinarily only allows players to control one pet at once; for instance, going DRG/BST will not allow you to have both a wyvern and a charmed pet at the same time. However, the game has no problem with you having a fellow and a pet out at the same time, making it fairly clear the game regards the two separately.

Damn, of course they can be subbed, I totally overlooked that. /blush

Another similarity is that when trying to do an action (i.e. healing) on another player's fellow, it won't let you and the log says that is someone's pet (giggity). And I think sambas don't work with them. Their critical hit animation is still that of a pet.

You cannot have a pet, an adventure fellow and a magi an trial log out at the same time.
There are only 2 pet slots so you can't currently have 3 out.

That's actually rather interesting to me, it seems like some sort of PS2 limitation programming oversight. I'll file that under the trivia section
