I never understood preordering of a digital copy. You at least in most cases get the physical copy in your mailbox on the release date. But with a digital copy you could download it right away on the release date.

I think it might just be a matter of just being able to go ahead and make the purchase ahead of time so you don't need to worry about it later on. I know of plenty of people that prefer to purchase things like that well in advance just so that they don't have to scramble for it at release date. Besides, with all the other thousands of people going to purchase it at the same time (if they do it at release) who knows what congestion issues there might be as far as getting your purchases to go through.

I guess it depends. I haven't experienced much of congestion issues since I downloaded Half Life Episode One on Steam (back when Steam was nowhere as big as it was today). I experienced a lot of congestion issues with Diablo III (buying it was very easy, downloading the client was easy, logging into the game wasn't). The thing is, I've never really experienced problems with congestion when buying a game, only when either downloading or logging into a game on release. I'm not saying the probability isn't there, it's just that I haven't experienced it a lot for almost a decade of online purchases of games. I suppose they want you to pre purchase the game and they throw in a few bonuses so you don't wait for reviews of that game so you can see whether or not it's worth getting or not. Of the very few games I've prepurchased have been Final Fantasy XIII and XIV. (._. )

It also helps with budgeting. I may have $30 in two weeks. I may not have $30 in two months.

Er, yeah, once one is actually able to connect to the update servers after hours fighting POL-XXXX errors. ;)

I don't know if this is how it will work here, but for WoW and other games the digital pre-order actually downloads and installs the entire expansion before the release date. Of course you don't get the play the content until they flip the switch, but while you are waiting for the mail to come round, everyone with the digital copies is already playing.

Mild stretch of the imagination that SE, even NeoSE to abuse the prefix even more, would suddenly have a robust system for distributing such content ahead of a release date. Par for the course would be a complete and total shutdown of the system as everyone tries to download it on day one.

Then again, there was some 'pre-patching' before other expansions, specifically the things you'd encounter outside of the areas added. I could stand to be surprised that they'd drop the content before unlocking it, but one might also figure we'll see it on the test server soon enough too so... fifty-fifty.

With SE probably not, but if it does I'll sure as hell be playing with .dats.

I mean waiting patiently for activation in 2 months.

Yea, I should have looked at the link. Looks like they won't be flipping the switch until... They flip the switch for the whole download. It's kind of odd - I mean they have been noodling around with all this digital content for the last couple years now. You'd think they would have a solid distro system to ease the server load when this goes live.

I also got a little chuckle out of this

Good gravy, I had almost forgotten I used to play this on an IBM T23 thinkpad. Was it Catwho that had it running on a netbook? Someone did - just epic.

Pretty cool that they are including all the xpacs with it. Kind of wish they would offer it as a standalone though.

Yep. It was fairly laggy and it had PS2 quality graphics, but dammit, it ran for a year and a half until that little guy developed an allergy to Windows XP. (I slapped Ubuntu on it and gave it to a niece for Christmas after that.)

Finally got a laptop for my girlfriend to get game and play. Normally I deal with things from SE. This time however, @#%^ off. Had her get the Ultimate Collection and none of the game is avaible until SoA release. At work and was told that the former Ultimate collection is no longer for sale. Way to @#%^ing go SE.

Ouch. Anyway, preordered since I got enough Amazon gift cards to handle this. Also; I called tech support; Expansion will run on Windows XP tho they don't say so. (Proly knocked it off since it's due to go out of support.) That's reason #20 why I need to go and get my pc upgraded tho, like I needed another reason.

This is because in the past people have purchased the Ultimate collection just before an expansion or mini expansion release, and people ******* to SE that they should get the new expansions for free since they weren't included with the old version.

That sucks, though. Are you sure you tried all places, like Steam and Amazon? Maybe one of them has a boxed collection for sale, just not the DLC version.

Had a rough week and that, as well as seeing a skid of coffee tipped over in a trailer, sent me into a rage at work. After calming down through the physical excersion of restacking a pallet I went home and googled expansions. Took a minute but found the Ultimate Collection Abyssea Edition, on SE store, and it worked. Got her on and today was her first day on game.

SE should have ignored that. Why would someone that buys the game with all current expansions cry and be acknowledged cause they want the next expansion for free. Everyone who has been playing has to pay for it, you aren't special.

Saw that it was ten dollars more for the ultimate collection and figured it was nice. Ten more bucks for ten years worth of content and preorder the next expansion. At this point I am not sure I will get the next expansion. I now have to pay ten more dollars cause they wouldn't allow access to current content with preorder.

This is just a personal preference for me, but I would much prefer going to a local GameStop and picking up a physical copy of the game. I mean, it's not like there are very many FFXI players left in the Houston, TX area anyhow.
