Your server in a nutshellFollow

#1 Jan 03 2013 at 10:03 PM Rating: Excellent
We get questions about "what is the best server?" all the time, and no one really knows the answer, because no one really knows anything about other servers except the people who have server hopped a few times.

So, here's a chance for us to explore the culture of other servers. Do you have a lot of helpful people, or a lot of selfish pricks? Is the top person on your server a douche or a nice guy? What about the top linkshell? What are Jeuno shouts like? How did the mergers affect your culture? Do you have any celebrity players you're aware of? (Bismarck has a Galka named PresidentObama.) How close knit is endgame?

Bismarck wrote:
Bismarck: Today's Bismarck was formed by the merger of Seraph and the original Bismarck population. The two groups clashed initially, although Xaetica of Old Bismarck and I, Catwho, worked with the Dynamis and Limbus shells to smooth things over until SE started ******** with the events and Xaetica gave up. (Xaetica was last spotted in Port Jeuno earlier this week shouting the N-word repeatedly, I think trying to get himself banned.) Bismarck's top #1 player, Voudou, is generally considered a nice guy. So are most of the others in the top ten - I can personally vouch that #4 and #, Raistlinratt and Oldelf, are good people. There are some known jerks that a new player should avoid at all costs, such as Magicomary (I blacklisted him back when we were on Seraph.)

Endgame is split into various cliques and clusters, not all of which are linkshell based. Most players who do not get along prefer to actively avoid one another rather than engage in direct confrontation. There are also various helpful non-endgame and social linkshells. However, we do not have a dedicated "newbie" linkshell like some servers. All "old school" style linkshells have ended in failure. The most popular activity shouted for is pickup Voidwatch, with the occasional Abyssea or GoV exp party or Abyssea NM run mixed in. NA prime time is between 8PM and 1AM EST, due to a large number of CST to PST players. There is also a very large JP population active during JP primetime, around 9AM to noon EST. Many old players from both Seraph and Bismarck are returning and finding their old linkshells broken, and several new or recycled linkshells have made a niche rehabilitating these old players to the new game (NoSephiroth did this before we exploded.)

I looked at FFahxi site for estimate and odin seems ot be at the top with over 16,000 active players and bahamut in second. I had a character on Leviathan and I really didnt see too much going on in early stages and when checking that server on the site it was in the middle with 10,000 players. Made a character on odin and wow what a difference. People are everywhere. Maybe not tons like in the past but i was never alone anywhere lol...gonna delete my leviathan character and make him on odin

How about just a list of linkshells with open invitations?

I know everyone asks about the server, but not all servers have chatty, open-invite, social linkshells and those are what is really important.
It might be a hassle though to keep up to date since contact info, shell holders, and play times change frequently.

Ive got a LS on Lakshmi its open, not to many (i think a dozen) mostly casual players (school/work). Its nothing special in terms of content, we have done some job quests, and Level Breaks.

Lakshmi itself is pretty cool, I think it is the largest bastion of ZAM mods in FFXI. I think at one point, Pikko, Vlor, and Thayos were all active, granted I have not seen Pikko or Thayos really since the servers merged.

I don;t know much about Lakshmi, but Garuda folded into it, Garuda is an older server, and it had some of the top LS's and players around. Garuda's SA shell (forget the exact name) were allegedly the first to take down AV the at the time unbeatable mob, though I don't know if they are around and if so how many.

Garushmi is alright we have have the largest community thread on this site with maybe a dozen posters from time to time (it might be the largest??) since the merger to Lakshmi I have met many more awesome friends, and reconnected with many old Garuda friends.

As for active community, can't really comment, I work a lot so I solo a lot, and when im on its slow (2-3AM EST) but thats expected for my play time. Perhaps a Lakshmi lifer could elaborate on the Lakshmi side of Garushmi a little more...perhaps not. Really they are all the same, but some have some slight claims to fame.... (Imo as far as the Zam community goes Lakshmi has the largest active representation.)

Not too unbelievable. I've been hearing it left-and-right lately, probably because of Game Grumps.

Ok, what the hell is Game Grumps?! I'm hearing it everywhere and I have no idea what it is! Too lazy to google it, too.

Edit: For anyone too young/not in the know. That quote is from the first Austin Powers movie.

For the record, I don't know what Game Grumps is either, and was also quoting the Austin Powers movie.

Wasn't Asura the server that had more people than any other server on that bot download list released a couple years back? The reason I remember is someone made the comment "keep staying classy, Asura" and it stuck with me.

Siren was cool. We had a Ballista Royale teams to be proud of and also not losing Besieged because these annoying people would harass you to come defend Al Zhabi.

I left this server and came to Carbuncle where I found many nice people. A cache of friends and friends of friends followed me there from Siren. Then we merged with Gilgamesh who also had many nice people.

I really don't think the servers are all that different.

I'm originally a Kujatan, so i cant really comment on how Valefor was before. However, i've only encountered rude folk on Kujata once or twice (the infamous Demo LS of the time). On Valefor however it seems like a daily happening. There's constant shout-wars in the streets, people who's only amusement consists of sitting in Jeuno and bad-mouthing/trolling people (you know who they are...) and general ***-hattery.

(Example: Went out of my way to help someone a while ago who couldnt find people, won without effort since it was an easily solo'd level 75 thing, but got no praise or thanks as they disbanded upon completion. Just lots of bossy and rude comments, demanding a strategy for 30-40/hit damage monsters, despite taking near forever for them to get there. Strategy was rubbish too.)

There's a small army of fish-botters controlling the fishing market, so there's not really any way to get into that. Other forms of crafting arent too bad on Valefor, as long as you can get ingredients from a NPC. Even a stack of Brass Ingots can be sold for 50/60k (with a base cost of about 8k), most common base materials follow along that path. AH prices for most things are fairly high compared to other servers.

Worm EXP parties seem very common, nothing else other than Voidwatch ever gets shouted for. Luckily we have a solid and dedicated Voidwatch userbase that generally consists of good and friendly people, without the nagging for everyone to basicly show up with a level 99 Emp/Relic. Sure, there's one or two who want that, and for some things it definately helps, but still. Qilin, Pil and Akvan are the most common runs and generally fill up in anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes. If you want to do anything else, you should set one up yourself and people will still join it quite quickly.

The amount of players online varries greatly. At the worst of times (or the best if you're looking to farm Dynamis and not do events) it can drop to about 900. At the best times (or the worst for farming) i see up to 2900 people online. Generally it's around the 1500~2000 mark during EU afternoons and evenings.

Dynamis (and other popular farming locations) usually dont have too many people around. It does depend on time, but xarca for instance generally has two to three other people around, with the occasional LS popping up in the area.

so tl;dr summary for Valefor:

- Not the most friendly people in general (common -REALLY harsh- shout wars)
- Crafting from NPC vendors is very profitable
- Fishing is an impossible market on Valefor
- AH prices are generally higher than on most servers for common base materials
- Decent amount of Voidwatchers
- Not much variation when it comes to EXP parties.
- No Meeble Burrows/Legion fanbase to speak of.
- Amount of players goes from 900 to 2900, averaging at around 1500 to 2000 at most times.

They haven't done any FF games yet, so this will have to do:

For all of the forums that XI has had over the years, how this one was missed is beyond me. Instead of all those server forums that maybe see one post a week if that, could they be replaced with a new forum just for linkshell recruitment\servers discussion? I know it's not as easy as a game that has free server transfers, but it has to be better than what we have now. That way at least new people looking for a server can see the "Active" options all in one place instead of clicking on each server forum and hoping for the best. Not a big fan of the "locked" servers showing with all the others, either. At some point, it's time to just say goodbye and move on.

Can the admins maybe have another discussion about overhauling the XI forums to be a little more streamlined? This game has more open forums than any other but does the activity level really warrant it anymore?
