So I returned to ffxi after a couple years and I am lvl 75 from back when 75 was still the cap. I am not sure what I did, but now when I go to npc's that are out in the world (such as a chocobo vendor) They only have "NPC" over their head instead of names. When I talk to them they say things like:
"Trial: use the prescribed weapon skill to deal the finishing blow to a set number of experience-yielding monsters"
Then I can't rent a chocobo or anything else. I have been looking since yesterday to try and figure out what this is. Google just directs me to magian weapons trials over and over. I am so confused. I can't find anything that appears to be magian related in my inventory, how do I even know what that would be? If I am on a magian trial would that explain why I am locked out of normal npc interaction? I can talk to npc's fine in town but not anywhere else. I feel like I don't know how to ask the correct question to find a google answer. I'm so frustrated.
If anybody can tell me how to get this to stop I would be so happy. I wanted to try and level some lower toons to get back into the game but I can't do anything (or at least can't figure out how) to get past these trial messages.

Hmm. I guess it isn't something I did. I went into zeruhn mines as a lvl 1 toon to talk to the npc's that let you into korroloka tunnel and I am getting the same issue. I know for sure that A newly created level one toon shouldn't tell me things about trials.
Sounds like you may need to re-install the game or do a file check. Something might have gotten corrupted.
Sounds too me like you have some corrupted files. Go to "Check Files" in Playonline and see what it says.

File check is saying everything is fine. I am trying to avoid reinstalling. (guess I will go make a backup folder /grumble)
If you're at the point where you physically cannot interact with any npcs in the game, and they're all showing "NPC" as their name, then something's corrupted file wise. I think a full re-installation might be necessary, even if you're wanting to avoid it.

Sadly Vor is right. I've never heard of a dat mess that bad but you prolly have some major corrupted files that Filecheck won't pick up.
Uninstall and reinstall and reupdate and see what happens. Also if you used the update archive on bg; you proly didn't have a program that could unzip files in pieces; I know that can cause missing music in the Alexander boss fight if it didn't unzip properly, if it's _really_ bad you might have problems elsewhere. Don't use it if you did before and just leave it updating all night. ^^

Thanks everyone. I did download everything again and re-install. The tipping point was finding that I had the same problems on a lvl 1 character. It is working so far. Hopefully I don't have this problem again.
