As the title states I'm returning to the game and starting from scratch. I've read the new/returning player threads yet I still have one major question. Money...I'm already having trouble trying to keep up with gear on my new character, I'm scared to death of what it's going to be like if I get higher. My question is how hard is it for a new player to get started without any help. I remember how excruciating it was years ago and what's the best way to go about getting back in to the swing of things. I feel so overwhelmed starting back at lvl 1 haha. Thanks for any answers/ advice

Money is easy to come by these days. You get gil rewards from pages. All the old basic crafting supplies are still in demand (beehive chips, silk thread, etc.) and crystal stacks sell well. And prices on most gear below 75 have fallen through the floor compared to what you were used to years ago.

Keeping your gear up to date is much less of a concern these days. With even some basic pieces being somewhat scarce and the fact that most people level in huge alliances and gain 10-20 levels in one sitting, the tendency these days is to power through the levels as fast as you can with whatever gear is available, and really spend time on your gear once you reach 99.

I started over ago about a month ago. The gear is not too big a deal. I try to make enough gil to buy decent weapons for DD. I am only 68 and prepping for Maat fight. Capping my under leveled gaxe skill is really the biggest issue. Hopefully you are on a decent server population-wise. Get help with GKs and the rest you can handle on your own higher up.

About soloing level caps:

The first Cap (50) is now totally soloable if you have access to sneak/invisible -- all you need to do is hit 3 "???"s hidden in each of the three dungeons (Eldiemme, Garlaige and Crawler's Nest) to get fragments of papyrus, coal or mold. Once you hit the 3, you'll get the real item for free.

The second Cap (55) is reportedly soloable as the "???" behind the Boreal NMs are now up at all times. I _hear_ you can sneak/invis past them, but I had a level 99 kill them for me, so I can't confirm.

The third cap (60) is probably the hardest one to solo, because you'll need rank 5 items for Beadeaux, the crimson orb mini-quest for Davoi, the Yagudo Torch (or a helper) for Castle Oz, and you have to dodge agro of some true sight NMs oftentimes (Yagudo High Priest and Ruby Quadav the two most notorious ones)

The fourth cap (65) is easier than ever, as all you need to do is deliver Kindred's Seals to random NPCs, and you can now trade Beastman's Seals for Kindred's in Port Jeuno.

70 is the same as always, a pain (or not) based on your job. 75-95 are easy as heck, and 99 needs a full group afaik.

Hope that helps a bit!

That's cool, thanks for the info Docent. Will pass this along to a friend who has to do GK1. I had help with GK2 so not sure if hitting them snk/invis is doable. Might have trouble when it aggros. Assuming they are not true sight mobs.

The Boreal NMs all have a tendency to drop Ancient magics on us -- use that time to run, grab the magicite and run out. Apparently, they don't chase outside their den very far, either. I haven't tried that route though.

Also, I'm pretty sure someone who can use pets (BST, SMN, PUP) could also drop a pet on 'em, then make a dash for the key item.

If you don't mind losing a bit of exp, you can plan to grab the item, run, die and reraise, and then unweaken before going to the next one.

XP generally take s place in 3 stages often just 2 now a days.

1: Gusgen Mines and join the Book Alliance til you reach 30+

2: Crawlers Nest and join Book Alliance ( most skip straight to Abyssea ) til 50

3: Off to Abyssea at this point.

As far as gear goes Starter gear is fine in Mines as you will be Level Sync -20 there. Crawlers nest Race Gear and a weapon upgrade. Do your AF quests. Once you're in Abyssea you start earning Crour which buy you your lvl 78 Pink White Blue gear. After that it's Empyrean gear.

In short some of the best gear you will want should cost you nothing more than time. The same applies to weapons.

Gil just isn't as important to the game as it once was, as others have said it's fairly easy to come by for your day to day needs. New gear every 5 lvl's is certainly not important due to the speed at which you do lvl.

Story line is still good as ever and most all of the ZM CoP content is soloable or dou.

Welcome
Back and Enjoy.

For those who like to solo/duo their XP and don't want to book burn in the "big 3", here's my personnal roadmap I use on most jobs:

1-10 Zeruhn Mines, P1 or P2, level 1 to 5, can push up to 11
10-20 Dangruf Wadi, P2, then P3. Ride that till level 21
[There's a gap where there's nothing really fantastic from 21-25. You can do Dunes pages, level sync or even join the Gusgen fun a bit if you like]
25-40 Korroloka Tunnel. P1, then P2, then P3, then P4. Ride that till level 44 or so.
40-50 Sea Serpent Grotto. P1
51-60 Gustav Tunnel. P1 or P2,
60-99 Bostanieux Oublietes. P2 if solo, P4 if an alliance is burning there

For armor, I agree with the above -- starter newbie clothes --> replace by full RSE at 29-33 --> replace with full AF at 52-60 --> replace with Cruor gear at 78 and then work on real gear.

Grab your free job necklace at level 30 (plus you get the funny emote), and upgrade weapons and essential spells, if relevant.
