For starters I just came back since 2006. I played when the game first came out but only for a month or so. I played again on xbox in 2006 but only made it to level 20 or so before stopping again. Now I'm back for something to play. Might try ARR if it's good but I'll wait a bit even after it's out. The point is I still don't know / have not experienced much in this game yet.

I'm 35 WAR. Sub unlocked but none leveled. Just been doing Mines pages for now because someone told me it's hard to find people in CN (I've never gone myself to see). I'd really like to unlock some new jobs to try out. Kind of interested in DRG, BLM, or SMN. For now I'd like to work on SMN because besides the luck factor (can be huge, I know) it seems the easiest.

My problem is the Leeches in the dunes aren't the best to farm. I can kill 3-5 before needing to sit and heal back up and they are spaced apart a bit so it's a lot of running as well. Is there a better zone? I heard there is a place higher levels farm them for something and I might get lucky and they'd let me look for the Ruby if I don't mess with their drops.. ?

Is this place easy to get to for someone like me, or do you know any other spot that could be soloed by me faster and still a shot at the drop?

Thanks in advance.

I'm on Ragnarok if you know a good LS also, who does not mind newer players :)

Maze of Shakhrami has a leech room, though they're not much easier. Buburimu Peninsula , F-7 I believe is where the entrance is.

I got mine off Poison Leeches in Buburimu Peninsula. They are level 21-25. I tried farming these after not getting any off the thread leeches in the dunes.

Would you say the poison ones are any easier to kill? I will probably keep leveling WAR in the meantime if nothing else than to make it easier to unlock other jobs with.

They are probably slightly more difficult but I don't think you should have problems handling one at a time.

You can also ask to join a party in Bostineaux Oubliette just to get a ruby. They're a byproduct of leveling there and almost anyone will happily let you in to lot a ruby. (Super extra awesome nice people might even let you in to leech exp, too.)

is Bostineaux Oubliette a place that is difficult for someone my level to get to? I've not explored much.

I guess there is requirements to go there, I'm from Bastok. So the chateau is out for now.

You have to be on or have completed the San D'Orian leg of mission 2-3 in order to have access to Chateau D'Oraguille.

FYI, the 2-3 fight is no longer level capped, and can be solo'd pretty easily by most DDs over 30. (I saw a crazy SAM solo it for someone at 25 cap, too. He used a pair of wings on top of his 2 hour, though.)

So don't hold back on your rank missions - Bos-tab access is quite nice, and the missions also give you some nice gil rewards as you level up.

I think the best option is to leech off an ally in Oubliette. However, you might also want to think about leveling a job to 99 first before shifting your focus over to SMN. Having a 99 job opens so many doors and you'll be able to fend for yourself a lot more of the time.

Yeah, I went that route Detlef. I figured since all of the jobs I may want later don't really need WAR sub I'm kind of wasting my time. Changed to BLM now and started leveling it up! It will compliment SMN or BLU later better than WAR would, I'm assuming. Plus it will give me a bit of caster experience.

When BLM is leveled sufficiently I can use it to unlock something next.

I would of continued with WAR but it only took like 2 days to get it there so it's not much wasted time to start over now for a class that's going to be a bit more useful.

I wouldn't recommend this unless you have somebody else doing the killing. Links will kill you in no time.

If you can barely farm the ruby, you can't even get the avatars you need to play summoner. It is, and always has been, a 'second' job for people who are already established.

Well, that or a job for people willing to leech avatars from high level friends.

High levels friends is something I do not have.

Having a bit of fun with BLM for now though and I guess when it is around 40 or 45 I could use it a bit better to look into unlocking other jobs. Thanks for all the advice offered!

Most of the jobs aren't so bad to unlock, but the zilart jobs (Ninja, Samurai, Dragoon) are a little tougher than the others. Summoner is just hard to play in general if you don't have a level 75 job, since all of your summons come from high level fights.

There are soloable fights which are quite fun and challenging at level 20, which get you the first six avatars... but you have to do high level fights for the others. Many people suggest not doing the low level fights since you can exploit the quests to teleport... ymmv. I am happy I solo'd them back in the day (2004ish), but who knows if the experience is still worthwhile.

I remember reading that at some point it was changed; you can still pick up the mini-forks even after already done the level 20 fights.

No idea if it was ******** or not.

You can pick up the forks again if you did the minifights, but confirmed, you can't warp there with them last I knew. (I can go check if you guys want about teh warps) You'd have to walk.

Yes. I was stupid and did most of my avatars mini b/c I couldn't get help and didn't know that.Luckily when I was doing them a lot to help newbies, they were understanding about me having to make a run for it. ^^

Dunno what server you're on but if you're on Quetz, give me a poke and I'll be glad to swat primes for you (I can solo the main 7 for sure now). Chara name is Elizara.

Nope, he will give me the minifork, but he won't take it in a trade or warp me. (Was trying on shiva.) Vid here for proof; I tried trading 8 times. I tried zoning real fast too.

Also if people want to see it, here's the raw log tho the failed trades don't show in it. (I copy and pasted that from the C:\Program Files\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI\TEMP folder; I've cleaned out proly what is a lot of the control codes but otherwise it is unaltered. This gets saved (tho if you don't have windower, it is overwritten every time you log in) even if you don't use windower.)

Was going to suggest DNC sub for WAR if you were gonna stick with it, particularly paired with Signet bonuses, but it seems like you veered toward the mage path. As is, /BLM won't do much for SMN or BLU and might even get you scoffed at by certain folk. SMN itself tends to be married to /WHM with a dash of /SCH or /RDM situationally. As for BLU, /WAR is a viable sub once you can fully set Dual-Wield, but even then, Utsu is easier to maintain from /NIN than BLU's Occulation. Basically, probably shouldn't /WAR without some support and an Almace.

I think it was you couldn't repeat them at all. Anyway, I'm glad most that I've done avs with have been understanding about it with me. And I usually get there shortly after fork warpers because I abuse VW warps/outposts and movement speed items/abils like you wouldn't believe. (I did the minis I did a long time ago; for a while I was abusing ops, if I did them today I'd abuse vw warps too). So it isn't too bad anymore but yes, the fork warps are still very much a advantage if you're doing the rounds for gil. ^^

Most 99 SMN I see are /rdm, but maybe that is just in WoE, where I see the most smn. With self haste/cure 4/refresh it's a nice sub.

Well, it's mainly 110 MP over 2:30 with Convert every 10m (Probably 900ish MP after self-cures depending on how zealous they are about convert sets). I'd think /SCH a better option, personally, but it requires a bit more micromanagement through Sublimation. Fast Cast won't affect BP timers and if you've got multiple SMNs around anyway, avatar kiting won't be nearly as difficult for the actual phase of summoning. Nor would haste mean as much if they're not meleeing. Garuda could still hook 'em up if they really wanted it, too. It's not as derpy as /BLM, but it just wouldn't be my first choice.

Scholar as a sub also lacks Cure IV, which depending on what you're doing, is really useful. As far as just keeping your Avatar out and general MP efficiency, /Sch would be better.
