Ran into one more question. I finally hit 50 on BLM and went back to the Thread Leeches and they are a much easier kill. Will this mob thats not worthwhile still be able to drop the item I need or would I have to be able to get exp off the monster for this specific item to be drop able?
Carbuncle rubies (and most items, really) will drop even if you are not receiving XP.
Only items affected by level (more specifically the mob giving EXP) are seals/crests.
Violence good. Sexy bad. Yay America.
And geodes/avatarites!
Although anything that can drop avatarites are guaranteed to give you EXP anyway so uh... just geodes.

Yeah, for the moment, those just have a minimum level to drop and you can't get screwed out of not getting them. Whether or not they truly mirror the seal system, we'll probably never know without a cap increase.
