Obligatory first question: Is the disc new or used?

Check the top of the DVD for any tiny scraches. Most of an optical disc is a layer of polycarbonate with a thin layer of aluminum layered over the top (this would be your label side) in which the actual data is encoded. A tiny scratch or something on the bottom won't affect the DVD too much, but even a tiny nick in the label side can render a disc unreadable.

Failing that...you may have a defective DVD.

Could be. There's a reason that you only write on any kind of an optical disc with a felt tip pen ONLY. If you got it via ebay or something, though...good luck getting your money back.

Wait... Sharpies aren't considered felt-tip pens?

I've... I've been living a lie....

I'll concede that I'm not 100% sure of that (they do have pretty stiff points), and if the idiot who wrote on the disc pressed too hard, it can cause enough of a disruption in the label side to make the disc unreadable.

The distinction is between a tip made out of matted fiber, and a ball-point pen, or a pen with a plastic tip. Fine line sharpie pens do have plastic tips and should not be used on CDs, but I think normal sharpie pens (the fat ones) are the de facto standard of what you should be using to write on CDs and DVDs.

Also, HQ professionally made and pressed CDs and DVDs have the layers cemented in the middle, not underneath the silver shiny label.

In that case I'd like to have a word with most of the manufacturers of my PS2 and PC games and discs....remind them of how crappily made their product is *grumble*
