Greetings and salutations!

It seems we could use an interesting topic like this again. I've played this game for atleast 8 to 9 years, and i believe i've seen just about everything there is, but i LOVE exploring things. Finding out about curious structures, Easter Eggs, and things that stand out or should not be a part of the natural world.

I'm looking to be surprised, and i want to experience new things, so i'd like you all to share Urban Legends and World "wonders" about FFXI and it's places. Not just for me, but for other people as well that are curious and never knew these things existed.

Things that are similar to, for example, the Full Moon opening up the secret Path in Ro'Maeve, the Strange Apparatus's found behind the imaginary walls all throughout Vana'Diel or places not normally reached or traveled that hold interesting sights.

I'm convinced there must be more things like this in the world.

I dunno if this qualifies or if everybody already knew this, but everytime someone completes the SMN flag quest, a rainbow will appear over the crag of Holla on the next game day. I just learned that a few days ago, and I had been playing forever. lol

The opening scene from FF9 is on one of the tapestries in Chateau d'Orguille. It's located behind the throne room in one of the hallways that leads to the king's quarters.

The tapestry in the lobby area, next to the NPC who lets you out, appears to be the cathedral in Tavnazia before it was half buried underground in the explosion from Lightbringer.

The wells in San d'Oria, which simply say "This is a well", are an homage to FF1, where the wells said the exact same thing when you examined them.

You can see the ruins of old Tavnazia from Blueblade Fell which is marked on the Lufaise Meadows map. I believe it's the same view you see in the opening movie, which was made before CoP was even released.

I always thought the wyrm in Lufaise Meadows was a nice touch.

If you go to the Leremieu Lagoon any day at around 14:00-14:30, a wyrm swoops down over the Lagoon and flies past.

People had widespread urban legends about making Goblins drop their bombs.

There's mysteries, such as where the other Astral Candescences from the Salvage Remnants are, then there's at least 1 unused map per Assault Zone (one has a few unused maps) which ties in to an Assault rank that was deleted in March 2007. There's also some unreachable island in Zhayolm.

There's some NMs that have been in the game since 2003 and have yet to have their pics posted. Some Moblin Maze Mongers NMs may not have been encountered yet (at least no reports of them being so).

Did we ever get a good answer what was up with Almighty Apkallu and how it spawns?

If you follow a Goblin Digger, he will at some point (seems to be once every 15-30 minutes) actually stop and dig. He will bury an item, stomp on it a few times to pack the earth down again, and continue on his way.

If you dig with a chocobo where he buried the stuff, you'll dig up the items needed for the quest Orlando's Antiques. I dug up a Goblin Cup that way.

His buddy, the Goblin Archaeologist, can be coaxed to the surface by trading items to the ??? that spawns around the Crags. The amount of surfacing he does is based on the NPC sellable value of the items, not the quantity. (The more valuable you seem to be, the more willing he is to come up so he can pounce on you.)

Neat thread! To go with it, a couple of neat NMs:

Taisaijin - http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Taisaijin
This NM was added as an inside joke, a nod to a rumor amongst the playerbase at the time that the then-rare scroll of Refresh was dropped by a Taisai in Ranguemont Pass (which was obviously not true). Fun fact: He's the only mob in the entire game who casts Refresh on himself, and he drops one of the most awful items statwise in the game, the Spelunker's Hat (which is similar to an Optical Hat, except it SUBTRACTS those stats instead of adding them).

Voluptuous Vilma - http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Voluptuous_Vilma
One of the rarest NMs in the entire game due to its insane spawn conditions. First, a placeholder Overgrown Rose in Yuhtunga Jungle must be left alone (as in, ZERO player actions taken upon it) for 10 hours, after which it will morph into Rose Garden. Rose Garden must then be left up for an unknown amount of time, after which it will morph into Voluptuous Vilma. It's Rare/EX drop has meh stats, but is so incredibly rare, it's highly sought after as a trophy piece. The ring was even a Rank 4 prize during the 2010 Mog Bonanza.

I was going to mention Almighty Apkallu as well, but I see I've been beaten to it :P

With goblin bombs brought up, I suppose crafting directions, times, and moon phases deserves honorable mention.

The same 3 npcs that act as Rivals while raising chocobos are the same 3 npcs used during the assault tutorial cut-scene. They are also involved in a quest that puts them in a romantic love triangle with each other after accidentally being drugged with a love potion.

I am pretty sure naja's assistant wears the sublinger popularly known as "panties," which is revealed in one of the rank up quests.

Through out the windurst quest in WoTG the male mithra is shown playing chess by himself. Through out the scholar quest Schultz(Sp) is shown playing chess by himself on the exact same board. Coincidence?

Edit: Some other ones I thought of.

My friend pointed out that before WoTG was released several npcs use to talk about the comet that could be seen during the crystal war. After it was released they no longer talked about it and a mural in quicksand caves depicting the comet was changed or removed.

There's a quest you can do that reveals the story behind the Mandy freelance for campaign. After completing the quest so long as you maintain the title given by it Mandies in the past will use Photosynthesis on you.

Taking the theme of urban legend, I like to just point out a theory a friend and I came to while analyzing the ToAU story-line. That Nyzul Isle was actually the original Alexander, the one depicted in the painting on Luzaf ship. That salvage made up his 4 legs and that the area Nyzul isle investigation takes place in. is it's body.

Uh, I think that's supposed to be extremely obvious canon.

There's a twinkling tree in West Sarutabaruta. I think, never been able to find it again. Pretty sure it's involved in a quest.

In Jeuno, there's 5 HNMs outside Jeuno in both the immediate outside zone and the zone linking to it (skipping Pashow, oddly). Each of these are 21-24 hour respawn monsters. They're all the same level (50-55 in "HNM" levels). They all have insanely low drop rates. They're all also in pretty hard to reach places.

Roc
Simurgh
King Arthro
Lumber Jack
Waraxe Beak

Out of these, Waraxe Beak stands out as an oddity. Four of the NMs drop useful items that relate to the abilities of the monster. King Arthro attacks fast and uses Hundred Fists. Roc uses Benediction. Simurgh has incredibly high evasion and uses Perfect Dodge. Lumber Jack uses Blood Weapon (and it drains on hit? maybe?).

Waraxe Beak, uhh.. Where does "rain" even come from? It never rains in M. Mountains, nor is he strong or weak against Water abilities. He doesn't cast them either. They're also incredibly weak gloves and they've been useless as far as I can remember. It's long been suspected that they're one of the items remaining with an undiscovered hidden effect.

Noble Mold is another interesting NM. People have thought they've figured it out for years, but there's evidence that conflicts just about anything. Is it correlated to the seasons? Probably. What else? Nobody really knows. It just takes way too much time to get it to spawn once, yet alone enough to properly test all of the variables.

The amount of mystery they've thrown into this game is insane. These are just the ones off the top of my head. There's something curious in just about every zone.

One time when I was wandering around Meripitaud as a level 55ish WHM, I stumbled accross a dead WAR on the ground. I hopped off my chocobo and started to raise him. He told me to (Run away!) and not to raise him; he was waiting for a Raise III from a LS member. Before I could finish casting the spell, Waraxe Beak found me and proceeded to make Tarutaru mincemeat out of me.

Later on, as a level 75 WHM/NIN equipped with double hammers and Reverand Mail, I went out and kicked that NM's *** in revenge. Took me a while, but I whittled him down. And he didn't even drop a damn crystal.

.....actually, any hole in the floor (in a dungeon or cell) is considered a toilet lol

Stop by Aydeewa Subterrane sometime. Little purple spiders hang from the ceiling right in your face. Really startled me first time I saw one.

If it's what I'm thinking of, it was one of the very first post-NA release server events. At least it was the first event I ever remember. The entire server had to come together to kill 12 of those things (you were level capped and they had massive HP). It was also the first and last server vs. server competition. If your world killed all 12 Twinkling Treants you got access to Outpost Warps. A month of two after the event was over, SE gave the ability to all servers anyways even if they didn't kill all the Treants, due to outcry from the less fortunate servers.

That thought makes me grateful suddenly that the dungeon itself is mostly empty except for the vampire dude.

Otherwise, you'll be fighting leeches, and the next thing you known you take "water" damage from out of nowhere and you've got Blind inflicted on you. Or worse, you take earth damage, and end up with the status equivalent of Extremely Bad Breath.

Mostly because some jackass put an extra zero or two on their HP. Some servers beat on them for days and barely put a dent in one or two.

Somebody at SE (Tanaka? Probably Tanaka.) probably had the silly idea of hundreds of people beating on one at once or something, as if the lag wouldn't be absolutely crippling, but they still had even more HP than even that would take down in decent time.

If you travel through the Crawler's Nest to get to the area of Rolanberry Fields where Simurgh spawns, you can see little grasshoppers hopping through the fields.

Let several Apkallu hop on the deck and leave them alone. If the spawn timers or whatever the other conditions there may be are up, two of them will walk over to each other and one will depop and repop as Almighty. There can be as many as 3 of him on one trip, so I have no idea if there even is a repop, I've seen on apkallu turn while fighting another Almighty.

That's assuming you get really lucky on gutting the fish. Lu shang's are 9 million~ right now and my ebisu fish would have ended up costing 15 million~.

Also you need level 78 fishing to start the ebisu quest anyway, so you pretty much need a lu shang's first.

There's a flower floating a foot off the ground in the Konschtat Highlands on the west side.

Pet Food biscuits are a stable time loop. Choh Moui is credited with inventing them on the biscuits themselves. However when you go back in time and trade them to her, she has no idea what they are, and invents them based on the idea. So they were never actually invented but exist anyway.

Trickster Kinetix, the NM weapon in quifim Island, is a douche. He tricks you into camping him, then drops a perfectly ordinary, craftable tabar at a 1% drop rate for your effort. He's tricksy.
