I'm returning after quitting from the phoenix server in mid 2009. I come back to a server that still has a decent population, usually hovers around 1100-1300 with higher and lower numbers for peak times of day.

Noticed a couple of things that through me off completely. Mobs are easier to solo after 12ish, what used to be the dunes PT time, and exp earned solo is basically what a PT could get at that lvl. Now I did read a couple threads about how people solo to lvl 30 now. (REALLY?!)

I read a few threads that Vlorsutes had posted in and I really like the knowledge base and simplicity that he/she explains things. I would like to hear from everyone regarding what I should be doing in terms of exping, crafting, PTing, and general playing as it seems so lonely now.

Is bazaaring outside of Jueno illegal now or something (sarcasm) because you used to almost have to wind through the players to enter jueno.

I'm on Phoenix and my name is Azuzu. I'm usually on between 10pm-2am central time USA. I would love to be able to use the other keys on my keyboard for something other than running. lol.

Hi.

With the introduction of the Tomes and Grounds of Valor, it's quite easy to level independently of a party. As you kill mobs listed by the Tomes/Grounds, you gain 'tabs' which you can spend on shell, protect, regen, refresh, reraise or even food. As long as you don't zone out (dcing or logging off is ok), you can continue to gain 'prowess' which can give you bonuses to treasure chests, accuracy and damage. It's a great system.

Don't think of you being all by your lonesome and having a pity party; leveling alone is quite nice: you can afk when you need to, you don't have to factor in any timing from other people and you're getting all of dat loot. With signet you can accumulate crystals for your crafting adventures.

Craftwise, I'm a fan of fishing/cooking because they can help each other at every turn and with strategic farming/leveling, your actual out of pocket gil cost will be minimal.

Bazaaring anywhere is not illegal. Jeuno no longer carries a tax (Aht Urghan holds that dubious honor now) and because of the high amount of traffic, Port Jeuno seems to be the most popular spot for bazaars.

Vlorsutes is fantastic, generally. I'm pretty sure he's a he. I don't have 100% proof, however.

Pics or it didn't happen! lol jk please no pics

Thanks for the quick reply. I somewhat stumbled on the FoV books and im so happy i did it right lol. I've been trying to find some really good "recent" guides as far as some of the jobs I'm lvling. I'm currently creating a completely brand new char, but i did call SE and they made me happy by saying I can bring back my old char ( if i pay $56.98 which is crap but im considering it)

I had 75 rng thf pld and drk. highish lvl rdm blm whm blu, and mostly everything else was minimal. pld isnt what it used to be but i had capped my GS skill so that might pan out for me, thf and rng dont look like they changed much and it actually looks like people respect the drk again(left when it was laughed at). Right now im on my new char as a mnk or war. both at 20.

Also, you don't have to level alone at all. Exp parties these days group together in alliances and do Grounds of Valor pages together for extremely fast exp compared to pre-Abyssea. The general flow of GoV parties is 10-35 in Gusgen, 35-60 in the Crawlers Nest and 60-75 in the toilets under Sandoria.

there are LSes dedicated to suffering through the game the old way. Now, while you can't "fix" the issue of higher exp per mob, you can still stand in the dunes with your party flag up for 5+ hours at a time.

lol i'll gladly pass on the cross eyed times of not doing anything.

Alliance exp pt's...... zomg cant wait lol. Alliances used to only happen for end game and besieged. it actually makes me happy to do it as a norm thing.

I know there are threads for each specific job but are there any outstanding jobs nowadays?

I think WHM is a ticket into almost all content. Ditto for BLM.

WAR is super useful because there is a lot of endgame with proc mechanics. (need to use a certain WS to get KI or better loot from a mob) - also a really strong DD if well geared. Ditto for NIN especially with procs...

THF is still needed for TH, and along with DNC and BST is good at soloing currency from dynamis.

BLU has situational use for magic proccing in voidwatch and abyssea and is a strong soloer.

MNK is a really strong DD (well geared of course) and can duo much of the game with a whm, the two of those jobs, fully skilled, can cover all blunt blue procs in abyssea.

SCH's two-hour, embrava, is a vital part of zerg strategy. As is SMN's "perfect defense"

DRK can be beastly as a DD. DRG is fairly needed for proccing in VW, and well geared and equipped can be a pretty strong DD. Sam can do gobs of damage without a relic/empy/mythic

COR is loved for buffs, proccing and damage

BRD is usually taken along in voidwatch for magic procs and buffs.

I think the jobs that are the least wanted in group content right now would be

RDM
PLD
BST
PUP

Each of those has it's own strong points but generally speaking they aren't considered super useful for average PUG endgame. Like I get asked to sub pld on my blu (and it is gimp at lvl 18) for shield bash... though some monsters with adds use a pld to tank the adds. Still, it's pretty niche.

My advice is to start with a mage job because the expectations for you to have super elite endgame gear will be lower. As long as your gear choices are not idiotic or purely lazy, people care more about whether you know how to proc, have the skill to proc and actually DO proc more than anything. (or if you are a whm, not sucking is pretty important, and brd, singing useful songs helps)

If you start as a mage you can build up some gear for your melee jobs so that you can take them out without blushing and actually do respectable damage.

If you want to start as a melee I would suggest DRG or SAM because they both can do respectable DD with magian trial weapons, rather than needing an empy or a relic to really compete.

Awesome thanks for the suggestions.
I was trollin around the job forums and there a lot of broken links in the stickies on mnk rng whm pld and war. are those threads gone or is the redirect incorrect?
i.e. http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/jobs.html?fjob=1;mid=1158670390287976678;num=20;page=1

Awhile ago we renamed a number of the forum urls, and unfortunately, as a result, those links will no longer link properly. And for the record, I am a guy. The person responsible for coming up with rumors to the contrary has been sacked.

lol duely noted.

but now that I have your attention as well seeing the things the others posted have you any other input as well? I had my first Gusgen Mines alliance today. 32xp per mob wasn't what i was expecting but we were killing them fast. the majority of the xp comes from the GoV correct?

Yes.

Also, the GoV starting exp will double after you repeat it enough times. Set it to repeat and just go to town. Your stat bonuses and exp will increase automatically over time.

GoV is good as long as you can get exp on the mob; this is why Bostineaux Oubliette is still used by level 99s.

I took your guys' advice and let her rip in gusgen last night. 9 lvls in 2 hours..... unthinkable. granted its low lvls but everyone makes it sound like thats how fast the xp gain is all the way up. tonight i'll be going to crawler's nest...... ew. I'm guessing skill-up pt's are more common now too with how heavy lvl sync gets used. thats fine because i have excellent memories from the tree crabs back in the day lol

it does slow down as the TNLs get bigger - but the amount of exp from the book does scale up so it balances somewhat.

being that a vast majority of your time used to be lvling then hunting down good gear, whats the most fun time sink these days?

It's still hunting down good gear, it's just you can do it in a team of four these days. 2-3 hours with a few good friends vs 2-3 hours in a giant elitist HNM shell? I'll take the friends, hands down.

that's super awesome. anyone on phoenix server? I'm already making some friends in game but the more the merrier
