That's only if you even win the fight. Lose it and you lost yourself $50 if you plan on transferring back out of your own pocket after a month wait.

I believe you'd be stuck there for 90 days, not just 1 month, before you could travel back to your own server.

Please do, Dear Leader, and record it for us, OK?

What job would you use?

I believe that he's willing to reimburse the $25 for the transfer if you take him up on it, but what turns me off the most to it is that if I transfer over for the match, I'd be stuck on that server until I was able to transfer again, and I don't want to be over on another server for that long. Even if I were to beat him and obtain all that gil, it'd still be a little bittersweet given that I'd be away from my friends for so long.

But you'd be finished with your new stick. And then you could start on that Ghorn.

Ouch. Three months away from friends is not worth a chance for the 50 million given how easy it is to make a comparable amount (if not more!) within that time these days.

why not just meet on the Test Server?

Edit: Come to think of it, wouldn't this also give an equal footing for the most part, since you could all have relics / capped merits from the vendor? You could then create a level 1 alt on his server to collect funds, and transfer that level 1 to your home server to move it to your main.

This is what the DRK had to say:

Quote:
First, because the possibility of any sort of "foul play" nonsense is mitigated by it having taken place on a "real" server.

Second, want to fight my character versus other characters that are built up, leveled, and worked in a non-testing environment, parallel to my own, the real servers.

Third, not a place where new game play mechanics may not have adequate testing, things currently in development, and where there are ways to get equipment that is not parallel to every other realm in existence.

This could be used to invalidate victories or defeats by people, I would like to avoid it entirely.

Fourth, I'm not really up to ponying up 30,000,000g and then paying for transfers. I feel I've done my part in the transaction by offering up a legitimate reward.

While I do hope to bring new interest this is not an entirely selfless endeavor.

There is also some romanticism in the idea of somebody "traveling" a great distance to face new great challenge. You may discard this as you please, but I still find some value. Some of that "epic" ness is removed by taking out this element, don't you think?

****

I had membership on the test server, I lost it, I applied a couple times. I do not have it. I have not put a great degree of effort into re-obtaining it.

Perhaps some people are hesitant because they do not believe in the legitimacy of the reward, I can provide proof it exists.

I conduct myself with a degree of seriousness, the quickest way to become the biggest laughing stock this game has ever seen, would be to not pay-up and for this to be some elaborate ruse.

I assure you it is not.

****
You do touch on an interesting philosophical aspect of the enemy I think will defeat me will possess, and for that you seem interesting.

He's giving you every opportunity to allow you to record it and keep tabs on what happens. This means in part that you'd have some record to be able to use should you get in touch with a GM. If it is mentioned in game between the two of you at any point, that he agrees to pay up should you beat him the required number of times, then it would count as a contract that he is bound to, and should he not pay up then a GM would be able to take actions. Even if a GM weren't able to (which is extremely unlikely if the aforementioned info is established in game), if you have proof that he lost those matches but still won't pay up, then I'm certain that he'll be hounded and badgered constantly.

In short, if he were to lose but not pay you up, then it's really no one's fault but your own.

I've talked to GMs about in-game deals or agreements (mainly relic loans) and while some may enforce them, it's apparently not the rule being followed by some (or most?). They were very clear to only deal with people who you know you can trust, because the ones I talked to said they wouldn't get involved with enforcing any contracts made in game.

That said, if someone is going to say this guy posting the bounty is full of it, the burden is on them to show proof. From following that thread, the guy may be a douche, a braggart, and is obsessed with a dead section of the game, but the one thing no one has done is actually beat him and post a SS of him not paying up. So far, he's held up his end of the deal as stated.

PVP in FFXI = picking the best job and trying it out a few times until you can exploit an advantage over other players. I graduated from this when the exploit used to be sleep bolt to 100 tp, and SA+WS insta kill the opponent.

Are you telling me somehow it's barranced now, or is it still pretty much pick a job that has an exploit, work on the minor few skills necessary to implement that exploit and go to town?

I never said anything about FPS, I was talking about PvP vs. PvE. Speaking of FPS, maybe camping in a FPS is fun to you, but speak for yourself. Don't assume your definition of fun applies to everyone.

If your opponent was dying from one SA+WS combo, that's just their lack of knowledge. A simple PDT set would keep them alive. Doesn't the gradual sleep resistance apply to sleep bolts as well?

I never said it was balanced. I even said in my first clause, the 7th freaking word in, that it was unbalanced. Did you even read my post?

Anyway, I've stated my opinion, feel how you like about PvP. But at least read and understand my post before you try to pick it apart.

Touche. Your original response to my first post in the thread is re-posted below. "...blind man in a vision test" was about balance and fairness, not fun. I'm not sure why you determined that a response about fun was relevant to such a quote. Then you said something about "just following a script", which is pretty much what PVP becomes too. Eventually, there is a best way to approach something. In PVE or PVP. If it's a little bit more fun to you to have a less rapid convergence of paths, whatever tickles your fancy, but let's not start throwing out reading comprehension accusations, when we are doing so well ourselves to begin with...

Fermion wrote:

Even though PvP in FFXI is unbalanced and pointless, it's fun to get out of the regular routine once in a while. PvP challenges you in ways PvE never can. Once someone comes up with a strategy, it's pretty much just following the script after that, for example, @ 66% we do this, @ 50% we do that, or even worse, fanatic's/fool's spam.

Mobs are very predictable, players aren't. The unpredictability is where I get my enjoyment.

To be fair, that's PVP in every game designed in the past 100 years or so. You find the most poorly balanced, easily exploitable facet of the gameplay, ignoring the remaining 95%. And then you learn to do it faster than anyone else.

Wait no I can't.

Plus the guy has no problem with others watching it.

If some one is really that confident in beating the guy surely they would record it, screenshot it. Not everyone has the likes of Fraps but still screenshots everyone has access to. Also take witnesses.

If some one says "I hear he doesnt pay up" at least say the names that are saying it? As much as I believe the guy can be beaten it does sound like he really is good but then you would be if yo dedicate a long time setting up a single job especially for PVP. And he probably is that serious in regards to paying the gil etc. Also im sure he is one of the hardcore XI players something I havnt been for some years. This guy does seem happy to allow people to record it, screenshot it and take witnesses and if he really is serious that he wants people to challenge him - he cant break his promise.

RDM/BLU, -PDT Melee set, Ice Spikes, enblizzard II, Bio III, face tank and swing sword (Joyeuse is best bet.). Silence, Addle to limit Abs TP, use Sanguine Blade to keep Health up.Dispel his Spikes (if used) Use Barthunder, and Barpara to limit Stun and Para. Use Break/Sleep as "stuns". Use Gravity/Bind to make distance if needed. Ppots Tacos keep cocoon up, use Blue Spells to heal, and lastly, use headbutt, GG.

A well played RDM/BLU has only one predator in PVP. A well played BLU/RDM.

The RDM in the video link was bad. RDM is terrible as a casting class in PVP, must be used as a melee in order to be victorious.

Id accept his challenge, if he wants to come to Lakshmi. I am not getting stuck on another server for 3 months, I already made that mistake when I went to Bismark. If he is willing to pay 25 bucks to have someone transfer there, he can use it to transfer here.

Rdm is so superior as a casting class in pvp.

The only thing that can come close is sch (sometimes with strats) and blm if they stack all -elemental/magian staff, but then the blm loses out on other insta cast/haste/dmg reduction gear.

It's actually borderline disgusting.

Is pre-buffing before engaging allowed? That would also put a damper on RDM/anything if everyone's supposed to start buffless.

I'm almost positive he said somewhere in the thread (I can't find it right this second) that he allows you like 2 minutes to buff or do whatever.

Edit: Found the post where he said that: linky

In caster vs caster combat, sure, but take RDM vs RDM for example. The one who melee's will win. Simply because melee can and will interrupt casting. With the amount of haste and DA available that coincides with defensive gear options, melee classes have a distinct advantage especially if they can take advantage of haste on a defensive subjob such as DRK/RDM. The RDM in that video spent more time recasting stone skinbecause of frequent interrupts he wasn't able do anything else.

Ideally you want to time your spell casts to occur between his attacks, rely on slow II, blind and Ice Spikes to reduce his attack frequency, your stacked defense combined with the effect from bio 3 (reduces his attack which is a further gain to your defensive value.), allows you to maintain stone skin for a longer period of time, which in turn allows for more time dealing damage. Combined with Aquaveil it is very easy to keep your wall up.

Essentially the majority of your time should be keeping your buffs up. Which occurs every 7 minutes.

Why no food that is pretty lame. Barsleep I guess would be required. But that is a pretty lame way to do it. One sleep resets the entire fight, RDM/BLU and DRK/RDM would battle like immortals, until someone misses a sleep, or a sleep 2, or a sleep bolt. Food and Meds are required to make any match remotely balanced. **** any job without a sleep wouldn't be able to compete at all.

The way Ballista is now, Red Mages are primarily there to set it up for the melees on their team. Though it'd potentially be different in a 1 vs 1 setting, in a team setting a melee Red Mage would likely get destroyed too quickly. They should try to focus on equipping as much Fast Cast as possible and go /Blm for Sleepga. Even if the other team has Poison Pots up, that Sleepga can act as an interrupter/momentary stunner to give you an opportunity to silence the now Blinkless Black Mage or break the shadowless melee.

You are correct, in a team setting the melee RDM is not as effective, not only because DD's are coming at you fully buffed, but they too have their support, and the RDM's longevity counts for nothing when under the pressure of multiple assailants with similar support. RDM is best served as a crowd control and support specialist in these types of encounters.

Then again most jobs are best served fulfilling their group designed roles in team PVP. Team PVP is essentially Team PVE and similarly most 1v1 encounters are the same as PVE 1v1 encounters. Granted their are the obvious finer points associated with the PVP style but the general principle is still the same. Count on your friends to allow you to maximize your effectiveness, or survive longer than your target.

It's still funny when a soloist job thinks they'll be hot **** in PvP though.

DNC called me out once.

"Saber Dance!" Dread Spikes. Have fun killing yourself. "Fan Dance!" Absorb-Attri, now you're even more screwed. "Waltzes!" Absorb-TP and you get WSed, or you spend TP on steps to get stuns and just get beaten into the ground.

Once.

Honestly, the guy's forthright and eloquent (so far). I'd invite him to my linkshell

Plus, he gets points for "Strider-speak"

Is pre-buffing before engaging allowed? That would also put a damper on RDM/anything if everyone's supposed to start buffless.

I'm almost positive he said somewhere in the thread (I can't find it right this second) that he allows you like 2 minutes to buff or do whatever.

Edit: Found the post where he said that: linky

That's actually interesting. The whole time I thought i read no pre-buffs. That changes things big time for pro RDM's and BLU's. I now think someone at the Avesta level could treat this guy like an HNM.

PVP in FFXI = picking the best job and trying it out a few times until you can exploit an advantage over other players.

I didn't write that quote Erecia.

To be fair, that's PVP in every game designed in the past 100 years or so. You find the most poorly balanced, easily exploitable facet of the gameplay, ignoring the remaining 95%. And then you learn to do it faster than anyone else.

I've never been one to jump on the overpowered bandwagon job simply for the "cheese" factor. I always play what I enjoy, and if I lose, so what, their class was overpowered anyway. But if I happen to win (which happens more often than you'd think against bandwagon cheesers) then it's fun to listen to the excuses of Mr. OP class.

To me, it's much more fun to win as the underdog, rather than the overwhelming favorite.

Doesn't need to be the avesta level. Besides (and not to take from the guys obvious accomplishments.) there have been much better and more impressive RDM solo's since his hey day. With many variable subs. In fact if anyone should be modeled it is Xenith who solo'd pretty well exclusively as RDM/BLU. But yes this is exactly how you treat 1v1 PVP. The entire aspect is to study your opponent and key on three things.

How can he kill me and how do I stop it?
How can I best kill him and how can he stop it?
What do I need to meet the requirements.

In the case of an event like this (using RDM/BLU as my choice) you would progress through the questions, refining the details. In this case I would find a DRK friend and actually practice fighting a DRK/RDM. While the skill level is likely not the same (due to this guys e-nuts) it does give you and idea how you can manipulate the fight, and how he can as well. (and as you progress your friend will too, and eventually you become better and better because you have to.) Anyhow lets say we fought a fight and got some details.
How can he kill me and how do I stop it?
- He can cut me up pretty good (DRK is a very strong DD)
I will try and up my defense and get more PDT gear, I can us Bio, Slow, Blind, Paralyze to reduce his attacks and damage
- He can nuke me. (granted with weaker numbers.
Silence can be useful, My melee can interrupt his casting.

How can I best kill him and how can he stop it?
- I can nuke him.
He can melee me to interrupt my casts, He has multiple stuns, sleeps He can take advantage and Aspir me to force early convert.
- I can melee him.
He can absorb my TP, he can use dread spikes, he has sleeps to reset the fight

What do I need to meet the requirements.
- I need to have a higher defense to render his strong point his week point. Considering Bubu's shield is such a strong choice, I will go with a melee build, this calso helps me against his casting,
- Considering my plan to increase my defense and use a melee build BLU seems like an excellent choice. Cocoon is a great ability and stacks very well with Bio. In addition I get Sanguine Blade which can help me heal myself to conserve MP, also has cheaper cures.
- I need to set my safe to nuke MP threshold and watch for aspirs (break silence or sleep will interrupt his cast)
- I need to make him run out of MP first. (force him to rebuff through dispels)
- Sleeps can reset the fight, Use this to my advantage, use barsleep when he begins casting sleep, and hope for the best.
- What is his resist hole? Use the Enspell II to make a hole if needed, death blossom can also help with this. Time a big nuke for big damage.

Hmm long example...I am a bad poster =(
