City of heros is still around, espicaily I you counter in all the expansion's they added.

The only way you can say it outlasted any is if it still is a subscription based MMO's. many started that way but became FtP.

So much for "Play for free. Forever."

Ah well, I hope the folks who enjoyed it find something else fun to play. I do feel for them.

By the end of the year COH is done. So ya it is still around...for a couple months.

I played shadowbane right before I started FFXI in 2004. I actually liked it a lot. It had a very robust PvP aspect to it which I thought was awesome, and I don't even like PvP.

Wait! What exactly is going on in the game titled Xiah Rebirth?
From the gameplay pictured there, I can't see how it couldn't have lasted.

Should've been more clear. I just meant the particular picture they chose to run in that article. Looked a bit off to me.

I have never heard of any of those.

Because the majority of them never took off. You only hear about the MMOs that are actually popular enough for some people to play.

It's like reading the obituaries in your local newspaper if you live in a big city. You probably won't recognize anyone in the list.

Meanwhile, City of Heroes is like the celebrity that everyone on Facebook mentions when they die.

wth is with "hockey" and "tennis" etc themed mmos, I can't for the life of me see how that would EVER have an audience.

Because MMO need not be attached to RPG. Still doesn't ensure their success, but that's the reasoning behind why.

I know that Fantasy Earth: Zero was originally Fantasy Earth: The Ring of Dominion, Square Enix's second MMORPG attempt after FFXI. It did poorly and was picked up by another publisher less than a year after it was released.

I didn't even know it was released in the US. I would have tired it out had I known. :(
It looks like it's still online in Japan, but if I'm IP blocked, then I guess it's dead to me. :(

Both games were dropped by their original companies, picked up by another and turned into a free-to-play game.

I played Fantasy Earth Zero. For exactly 10 minutes, then uninstalled. FYI: It was picked up by Gamepot USA.

Goes to show that If 14 didn't have Final Fantasy stuck to it SE would have dropped.

AFAIK, Dark Age of Camelot is still around. Tiny population (last I heard 5k- 8k, which is just a bit under the last figure I saw for FFXIV) but still around. EverQuest, Ultima Online are still around. Heck, The Realm Online is apparently still around and it appears Meridian 59 is too.

From what I know...
City of Heroes (soon)
Star Wars Galaxies
The Matrix Online
Front Mission Online (if FFXIV is shut down, this wouldn't be SE's first shut down MMO, ignoring Tetra Master)
Auto Assault
Earth & Beyond
Tabula Rasa
The Sims Online
Shadowbane
Asheron's Call II
EverQuest Online Adventures (the PS2's other MMORPG)
(and not sure if Phantasy Star Online counts or not)

I would have thought that much was obvious. I mean, you can't just drop a title from your flagship franchise like that.

City of heroes is being shut down cause it was using up resources needed for new games ncsoft were releasing I read. It was making enough money to carry on but they needed the resources,m sometimes its bad to play a game run by a company that runs so many mmo.

FFXI outliving FFXIV was quite hilarious.
