Which Race is best for me???Follow

Hey yall. So I just subbed to FFXI after just subbing to XIV THEN finding out servers are shutting down in a month so I feel no drive to play XIV at all with such little, useless time... Plus it will be fun to experience new world from the beginning in XIV when 2.0 hits. ANYWAY! I am completely new... level 1 haha. I am debating my race... I am thinking Elvaan, Galka, or tarutaru maybe. I am interested in the classes: White mage, bard, scholar, and corsair. From what I have seen tarutaru excells the most in all of these jobs over all others based on mana ****, charisma, and agility being so high. But I worry if taru don't look good in gear cuz they are so tiny lol. I do kinda like how Galka looks and Elvaan... but I don't want to be a gimped toon :( any thoughts on which I should pick. I just wanna be capable and look good :)

The base stats (HP, MP, STR, etc) really don't play that significant a factor in how well a race performs in a job. Sure a Taru melee would put out less damage than a Galka will on paper while on the same job with the same gear and buffs, and sure an Elvaan is going to have a bit less HP than a Galka, the actual racial differences, especially in end game content, are very small. A good mage, regardless of their race, will have a hard time completely burning away all their MP with proper gear, and Taru melees can deal significant damage, beating out even Elvaan and Galka in the same general situation.

For the most part, your race nowadays determines how you look, not much more. Yes, some races will have a slight advantage in a certain job over others, but again, the differences are minor enough that you wouldn't be gimp for choosing a race and then choosing to level jobs that don't complement it well.

Each race has its merits but in the end it's all about which one you enjoy looking at for hours on end. The game is much easier now and to be honest there aren't really any compelling reasons to choose one race over another. It's more down to what you feel represents you best and as I said, which race you enjoy looking at constantly as you play the game. Of course some races have better emotes than others but that's about it. Really it's up to your own personal preference but I wouldn't presume to tell you which is best. You'll have to make that decision yourself.

Just make sure you don't pick Elvaan. Especially if you want to be a Dark Knight. The accuracy issues alone will be enough to make you want to quit!

Accuracy is probably the only thing that really sets two races apart, and even then only on 2-handers really. Differences in STR or Attack are super minor because they get stacked so high anyway, but accuracy is always relative and 7.5 Accuracy is 3.25% hit-rate if you aren't capped, period. dDEX is less of a factor but something to consider as well, being irrelevant of weapon type and whatnot while fSTR would be a paltry 1-2 base damage boost on top of 120+.

Stat differences were actually starting to diverge when 85 cap came out, Mithra had about 14 DEX over Elvaan (10.5 accuracy, a big deal and the gap was set to get wider) but then someone swung the Balance bat and we're back to just 10 DEX difference from Mithra to Elvaan (other races falling between) the same as it was at level 75. Booooooo~ring!

8 STR vs. 7.5 Accuracy though... that's the choice between two single pieces of equipment now, versus perhaps half your equipment at 75. I actually wish stats had stayed divergent since 75 such that race could actually have an impact on endgame gearing (but remain fairly irrelevant up to that point). Oh well.

Play Tarutaru, and spend time fantasizing about playing a Galka. Or play a Galka and fantasize about being a Taru.

We call this 'MP/HP' envy.

Other stats dont matter, because you dont get to see them. Tarus see that big Galka HP in the pt menu, Galkas see the taru MP. We both get jealous, so we just make fun of Elvaans.

The only real statistical extremes seem to be Galkan HP and Taru MP, and those extremes are most apparent to each other.

Beyond that... play what appeals to you. I ran with a Hume for for years just because I thought Hume's balanced stats would be a big deal for RDM, all the while preferring Elvaan, aesthetically.

I recently bit the bullet and re-rolled an Elvaan, and I don't regret it.

Elvaans are great.

If you start off in Windurst you can go to Windurst Woods and visit the farm where the Mithra breed them in captivity.

Aside from appearance, there is lore and racial tensions to consider.

1. Tarutaru breed like rabbits, are the most populous race (due to the breeding like rabbits - they are about a third of the in-game population), and are popular for football practice by the taller races. Expect to be frequently punted.
2. Humes are boring, and tend to be the villains in the game. Everyone regards them with a slight level of suspicion.
3. Elvaan are arrogant jerks, are called "dhamels" or "longnecks" by everyone (occasionally orangutans by Humes because of the long arms), and have trouble hitting the broad side of a barn sometimes.
4. The "male" only Galka were enslaved by the Humes for several centuries, and are still bitter about it. Also, they have no functional reproductive system (although Galka PCs swear they have "legacy equipment.") Great hulking HP, possibly no balls.
5. Mithra are female player-character only, and are either 1. men trapped in women's bodies or 2. desperately fighting over the one male NPC character we've ever seen.

Humes hate Galka. Galka hate humes. Some of them try to get along but...

Tarutaru tend to like Galka, and vice version.

Galka like to date Mithra, once they are confirmed female. So do Humes, for that matter.

Elvaan hate Tarutaru since they sort of invaded and destroyed their civilizations multiple times.

Everyone hates the Elvaan.

My only regret with choosing Taru is that some of the detail on the armor is lost since the character model is so small. Other than that whatever floats your boat.

Oddly enough I'm fine with Taru animations in XI, but for some reason the Lallafel running in XIV bugs the hell out of me. They don't bounce when they run.

Doggone it people like me!

As to the OP: The absolute most important thing when choosing a race is aesthetics. The stat differences are not going to affect what jobs you can or can't play. Just pick what you think looks the best and have fun.

Hi, I would like to chime in on this, I know a lot of people will not agree with me or think I am insane for even doing so. I have leveled 3 different races and yes some even with the same job. from what I experienced, race does matter. Most of all I will agree with some on here that it all depends on what you enjoy looking at all day but after that I have to disagree. I leveled ninja, dark knight with Elvaan, Mithra and now hume. Once they all capped I noticed something different about each one. For example when tanking those very hard mobs Elvaan could get hate and take hits all day if needed, mithra was VERY hard to keep hate and a few hits on her and she was dead, however her evasion was insane and very fun to watch. Hume to me seems to have the best time with ninja being middle of the road. Elvaan drk did insane damage and mithra well, something left to be desired, hume again was so so.

I guess what it boils down to is what job you want to play if you are tanking Id plan on in this order: Elvaan, Galka, Hume .. anything else is a free for all .. In the end tho if you dont enjoy the way it looks, you will never like it.

With the right gear, race doesn't matter. Just pick the one that you think has the nicest ***. You'll be staring at it enough.

this makes me wish i had made a female hume instead of a male hume. Every game I play that has you making a character, i always choose a from now on.

Another reason to play tarutaru, you only get to see the back of their heads. With proper hats on, you can hardly tell the differences between a male and female tarutaru. (Unless you are an expert, as a hint taru ladies have angrier eyebrows.)

Alsi, you can stare at any *** you want as a Taru.

This. The flip side is you'll feel like you're running faster as a taru. I had always had taru characters before since I focussed on mage jobs but my most recent character I went with hume because I wanted to be able to see my cool armor.

I see how awesome my galka mule looks in event gear, though, and sort of wish I'd gone with galka. My hume character's dykey look sort of makes up for that though.

I don't remember why i chose the race i chose 10 years ago, but if memory serves me and i hope it does.
You can play anything with anything, if you put in the effort to compensate for the short comings.
Other wise this link, can tell you what stats the races have depending on job and level.

Whatever tail you like look at the most is the best.

As it has always been.

The difference in atributes is minor and doesn't matter. Only HP/MP matters, and very little.
