The complexity of Chocobo raisingFollow

#1 Sep 14 2012 at 10:52 AM Rating: Decent
Only thing complex is how to get money for it. It seems like your first chocobo won't have access to items necessary to max out stats unles the AH is friendly to you. Being a returning character still only making money off of crys and a few spell drops I realized I could have an advantage returning to my old chocobo. However, I didn't get too far in the raising process and it's basically a gimp in races not being able to even place higher than 6th in the novice league.

Since care plans stop working beyond the 64th day I wasted a crap ton of time trying to calculate how I would get close to the stats I wanted.

All I wanted was the bare min to get SS/SS/A/F for str/endu/disc/rec respectively. Something like 224/224/160/ with 29 to allocate until that was reached.

It's not possible within taht 64 time constraint. I can get Str/Endu to the bare min in 59 days using plans alone. If I ignored the stat decrease in Endu, I can get 40 disc and rely on the basic plan to get the 30 pts lost to Endu back with another 30 to the other stats for something like
254/224/70/30 which is on the right track.

I'm still messing with the number to maximize the time for care plans. I'm sure someone has done this before. So far, I probably have to stop raising str/edu around maybe 180 pts or so and focus on getting disc as high as possible before I have to use basic care. With the lack of static data for food, I don't want to rely on it. Also, I can't seem to earn chocobucks since my current steed can't make it's way to choco fam.

I'm guessing, I might have to raise at least 2 chocobo with the latter being my racer and the prior being one that is good enough to earn chocobucks. I can make the prior be a digger and try to get chocobucks that way. I'm not sure the success rate for this.

Anyway, my question is, for someone poor as I, how feasible is it to get my build of SS/SS/A/F with what I've outlines so fair? It's looking like I will probably get SS/SS/C/E... 64 day care limit is very limiting...4 of which aren't in your control

You should look up the recipes for the food you want and grow it. With 10 pots, you should be able to grow all the food you need for an entire raising cycle in a week or two.

Keep in mind also that first generation chocobos are much more difficult to bring to max stats than chocobos who are from later generations. (First gen chocobos meaning eggs that came from loot pools.)

I'd ask around and see if anyone has some chocobo cards they'd be willing to give you, so you can breed a chocobo that is at least second generation, and get a head start on some stats. Then you won't need to be so exact with food.

Frankly, I know of no one who makes money off chocobo racing or chocobo digging any more. The time sink to reward ratio just isn't worth it. My current non-Abyssea gil making methods rake in 100K an hour or so, which is far more than I'd ever get from playing with my chocobos.

cat is on the money, what you're going to want to do is get two chococards with chocos that have the abilities you want, give them a honeymoon and cross your fingers - cause if you're lucky your choco will be born knowing an ability - my choco was born with gallop, which made up for me neglecting the crap out of it, it still runs at a decent pace.

Rather than rely on things randomly showing up on the AH, you may wish to establish a relationship with active chocobo enthusiasts, and buy items directly from them. If they're racing on the Circuit but not actively raising a bird, they may have surplus chocobucks you could offer to convert to gil. Or if you're short on money, maybe offer your character's assistance for non-chocobo activities they can't do alone.

The majority of active Chocoracers these days are Jpn players, but you might still get lucky and find someone willing to take you under their wing.

Check the San d'Oria chocobo stables. That used to be the place for bazaaring chocobo items (and by used to, I mean I saw people there last year, long after chocobo racing died).

If you could raise a chocobo that was faster than a rent-a-bird people might gives a rat's ***. As it stands, raised chocobos are only good for digging... which is hilariously irrelevant these days. All the fun is lost after you watch the same 'go for a walk' cutscene for the eighth time in a row trying to get the meeting or whatever.

If you could like... call the chocobo whenever you like, no item charges *********** and the bird got smarter if you did a lot of digging, or faster if you called it often and ran it around a lot...

You know, if they actually grew as you used them, instead of being grown for a use you'll never care about. If their colors mattered much more than being able to show it off once in a blue moon that your LS gathered in an area you can actually call it in... and then you lag behind because you didn't do the stats perfectly and there's nothing you can do it once you make it rideable.

Yeah, just another dead system for being squandered from the start.

I agree there is little reason to own one now. If they changed around the items gotten from digging and from racing, it would go a long way. As it stands, the only few unique perks to it are just to show it off and use them to gain a few rare/ex items for your MH.

However, if you do like just the nostaliga of older FF chocobo racing games (and mini games) it can be fun in FFXI. Just don't expect a large return on your investments. The ride along the way, CSes and such are nice. I always felt bad seeing the CSes of mine growing old and retiring. :3

Ehhh.. That isn't completely true. For the high tier races it was my understanding that if you won you got 100k. I know of people who would log in do a 5 minute cut scene for the race, get 100k and log out for the day haha.(You could do it only once a day.) But raising a chocobo that could consistently win the highest races and then getting access to those races. Makes it so even a free 100k a day wouldn't make up for the time lost.(Again this is going by memory from something I read awhile ago)

However, if you just enjoy raising simulators and the money and items you could win are just a bonus. Then knock yourself out, it's a pretty solid sim. I Personally went buck wild with the Chao raising sim in Sonic Adventure 2. So I can understand people who enjoy that.

Another angle that hasn't been looked is you don't even need to own a chocobo to make money in chocobo racing. You can make money betting on other player's chocobos (or even NPCs). If your friend has a fast chocobo and you can determine who will end up in second place, you can make money betting on their chocobo. For best results use 2 players (as NPC chocobos tend to lose against really... excuse the term... player owned "pimped out" chocobos. Sometimes taking your fellow friends from your LS to see your chocobo run and to make some friendly wagers can be fun in itself.

Not entirely true. As a veteran chocobo-gambler i have to point out that there's some major design flaws with choco-betting and that very few people are making money off of it. It's not hard to figure out who will win, it's usually one of the three SS/SS/A's that participate. But the chance to win and the payout is so minimal compared to the risk that it's not worth it unless you're the most lucky ******* out there in Vanadiel.

The thing with buying tickets for those winners is where it gets flawed. It starts off with how the more likely your favorite chocobo's are to win, the lower the payout for those birds starts out at. Second, if it says that one Chocobet ticket is worth, lets say... 400 gil (since only the chocobo's that have zero chance of winning have a 50,000 gil payout per ticket) and you buy 10, it doesnt lock in the price. It doesnt mean that if your pick wins, you get 10 times 400 gil. Once people start betting on the more likely victors, the gil prize actually drops. The more quills for a chocobet tickets are sold, the more the total payout per ticket drops.

I've seen times where the chocobet payout dropped to around 110 gil when someone bought a bunch of them. Seeing as how one quill to your ticket is 100 gil. If you do end up picking the winner, you only have a 10 gil profit to your ticket. Just last week i blew another 30k in gil chocobetting. Made a small profit, then lost most of it. When there's three strong chocobo's that can win. The possible combinations are 1-2, 1-3 and 2-3. Basicly giving you a one in three chance of guessing it right. I can asure you that very few people will buy 100 quills (10,000 gil) on their favorite, when they know it'll make the payout drop to next to nothing as well as the chance of actually getting it right is very slim.

You can buy 100 tickets for 10,000 gil and get a 110 gil payout for 11,000 gil return, which is a 1000 gil profit.
Or you can buy 10 tickets for 1000 gil, and get a 200+ gil payout, for 2000+ gil return, which is also a 1000 gil profit.
You might not think it does, but the gil prize drop is huge after only buying a few.

Checking each chocobo's item before race and knowing the NPC rider's style helps to give you much better odds. Also, PC chocobos tend to tip the scale over NPCs (at least in the smaller circuit races). With the right deductions and knowledge of how the system works (weather, abilities, stats, jockey items) you can narrow it down to a safe betting margin and earn money over the long haul. You don't make a lot over other forums of gil earnings due to the risks but you do make some gil. The problem is that you have to catch the right race with the "ideal" conditions that the game doesn't factor in as a benefit when it comes to payoff odds. That can take a lot of patience and well... unless you just happen to be at the right race at the right time, it can be frustrating waiting for the sweet spot. But if gambling and racing is your thing, it might be more fun to you then farming abby chests. Chocobo racing is a slower way to make cash to be sure though and has a harder learning curve. Expect to lose money as you get a feel to how the chocobo racing system works.

On a side note, bets with fellow friends (I'd never make a wager with a stranger) can be a fun way to just kick back and enjoy some different game content together. I wish SE would update the system rewards though, along with some older game content like pankration, garrison, expeditionary forces. SE likes to add new diverse content but seldom updates it hand in hand with the other conventional content of FFXI. Here's to hoping the new director of FFXI does (the meeble burrows are ok but I still have no clue why it couldn't have just been a MMM revamp with no cool down times and new rewards)... but that is another matter. :3

Back when it was first introduced, there was a player who figured out a system and made a ton of gil betting on NPC birds -- this resulted in a nerf of Chocobo betting and a ban for the player.

Entering races is still profitable, but It is currently impractical to make more than a small amount betting (due to the Parimutuel betting system in use, in which large bets reduce the payout ratio for popular birds).
