(I hope this is in the right place)

Hi all,

I recently download FFXI Ultimate Collection from Steam. Day 3 of attempting to set it up and I've gotten nowhere.

I've set up my Square Enix ID, my PlayOnline ID, and purchased a Content ID. So far so good. But when I load PlayOnline Viewer, I got Error: Pol-5312, because my Square Enix ID or password is wrong. Problem is... it never actually asks me for this ID, just my PlayOnline ID. So, I came to the conclusion that it was the fault of the older version of PlayOnline that Steam provide, and I tried to download the most recent from Square themselves.

Next problem: I installed PlayOnline, but when I try to open it again I get an error messages saying "cannot write to the specified destination folder" or something like that. It just won't open. (This is Windows 7, by the way). And when I try to uninstall, it says it can't find the installation source and the uninstall fails.

so I'm now stuck in a terrible limbo... Has anyone else faced these problems before? Anyone know a solution?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

My initial guess to all of this is that you were using your POL ID when it was asking for your SE ID (or vice versa) or something along those lines. It's a common mistake and the system is a little unusual for new/returning players. If you can return to the working version, we can probably be of better help even if that isn't the problem.

Are you trying to uninstall from Windows Program Manager or from Steam?

I think, at this point, if you simply want to return to a working version of POL, go into steam, right click and select to remove local content then reinstall from there. Your account is not linked to any particular download or computer or game system- so you lose nothing but install times.

Well when it asks me for all the codes, it only asks for my POL ID and password. It has a line saying "please enter your SE ID if necessary" but leaves no space to do so. The only boxes to type in are my member name and password and POL ID and password. So I can't figure out where to actually put in my SE ID :/

I was trying to uninstall PlayOnline from Windows Program Manager, but I may as well try uninstall it from Steam as well, start again with the installation.
Thanks

Codes? Sorry, I assumed you were trying to log in, but this is a problem when you're trying to register something?

I'll take a look when I get home, the setting up of a new account in POL isn't straightforward at all, especially with the new SE IDs mucking things up.

Sorry, the word "codes" was a bit ambiguous. No, I've registered just fine, and I've been able to set up a SE ID, POL ID and Content ID with no problem.
My problem is with trying to put all these IDs and passwords into the PlayOnline Viewer when I log in. It asks me for this information:

Member name: ______
Member password (optional): _____
Confirm password:_______
PlayOnline ID:_______
Set password: Save/not set
PlayOnline password:_____

My question at the moment is pretty simple... where exactly do I input the Square Enix ID? As far as I can tell, that's why I'm getting the error code, because I'm not able to input the correct SE ID...

You're missing the bottom of this screen then?

If you go to "Check Files", what POL version do you have listed?

Yes, I'm missing those last two lines from my screen. The POL version is Ver. 1.18.00n. I've tried downloading another version direct from Square Enix, but now when I try to open it it says it can't write to the destination folder, or that it can't open registry key for install path of the software. And I can't seem to uninstall it either :/

Update: I finally managed to reinstall the PlayOnline Viewer from Square, and overwrote the PlayOnline Viewer provided by Steam. Now when I go in it asks for my SE ID!!! Log in has proceeded smoothly, with no pesky Error codes. I guess I'll see you all in Vana'diel, after about a day worth of updates!! Praise Altana!!

Thanks for your help.

If the update is going to take 8 hours or something ridiculous (I don't know how much of the game Steam includes), you can try this torrent: http://www.bluegartr.com/threads/99953-All-Final-Fantasy-XI-PC-Updates-amp-PS2-Disc-Backups

It contains every update and is typically faster.

Okay I had this issue last week, and the way I found to fix it is to find the FFXI folder under the steam folder (C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\FFXI) and delete the entire folder and any files in it, and then reinstall POL. It seems that it could be caused by existing files that were not properly uninstalled for some reason.

Yup, that's what I ended up doing. Steam wasn't happy about it at first, but I clicked "verify integrity of game cache" and it seemed to fix the problem... now PlayOnline Viewer Ver 1.18.15e opens each time :)
