You have to find your 'ABCD1234' format POL login on the SE website, and likely a password or need to set a password to go with it.

You pretty much have two logins. Your SE Name/Password that you use on the website and partly in POL, and your POL Name/Password that you use only in POL and generally will just keep saved so you only have to enter your SE password.

In the registration process, did you end up at this site? https://secure.square-enix.com/account/app/svc/login?cont=account

You should be able to log in with your SE id/password. Try that now.

Scroll down
Choose "Select Services" on the left side
Pick "Final Fantasy XI"

On this page, you should see something similar to
Quote:

PlayOnline / Final Fantasy XI : ABCD1234 [US]

That ID is your POL ID. If you don't know the password you associated with this POL ID, you will need to call SE support. Many say SE's service is crap, but I've NEVER had a problem resetting my password.

There are two different sets of login information because we originally had POL accounts before SE created the SE account system. You can setup POL to save your POL id/password so that you'll only have to use it once and only use your SE account after that.

It keeps saying that:

Error code: POL-5311
The square enix ID, square enix password, or one-time password entered is incorrect.

XI has only limited in-game config options. To change the game res you will need to close the client and change it with the config program that came with the client. There is also a way to adjust it with regedit but someome else will have to explain that method. Trying to type that out on my phone would a bit of a pain.

OK I think I've set the quality with the config. Time to play! Hope I get used to this game control soon... Again thx guys for answering all my questions.

First, the game is 10 years old, so there's nothing wrong with your PC, just don't expect Crysis-level graphics.

Supposedly, disabling the opening video through FFXI config will fix POL-0515.
You can improve the graphics by following this guide: http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Graphics

The FFXI config program (accessed through the start menu) has some options for resolution and such, but they are limited. The above guide explains how to use regedit to improve the game beyond the given config options. As long as you only change the values in regedit listed in that guide, the worst that thing that can happen with be that FFXI stops working and you reinstall (not a big deal), BUT if you change any number not mentioned in the guide, you may cause significant problems with other software on your PC including the operating system, so proceed at your own risk.

Thx. It's really helpful. But I think I'm gonna give it up lol. And I don't know how to exit the game... Do I have to Ctrl+Alt+Delete every time I want to exit? I took a mission but I don't even know where to find that man it told me to talk to lol. I have no weapons... can't even kill a bee! I'm so confused.... I think the game needs to show some guides to beginners... Maybe I'll wait for XIV when it finishes updating this year :)

See, this is why new games suck. Designers have to stoop so low for certain players to be able to figure anything out on their own...

Benefit of the doubt on your login issues, but did you try like... talking to somebody in-game? A player I mean, not an NPC? Did you try pressing buttons if you're using a controller? If you have a keyboard, asking for help should have been easy, it's not like the starter cities are quite as deserted as they were. Did you seriously get so far as to 1, Talk to a gate guard for a mission then 2. walk outside, try hitting something with your bare fists (even though you start with a weapon on every job that isn't the one that hits things with their bare fists, no excuse there) and then give up!?

I'm f*cking boggled here. I'm having a total Egoraptor 'HNNNNGGFFFFFFFFFFFFFF' moment, because this is silly.

When I first started, I thought the 10 hour update was the game telling you "there's no tutorial, read the ******* manual."

Also, http://lmgtfy.com/?q=FFXI+noob+guide
One of those results might be useful, just a guess.

Of course I tried pressing EVERY button. I said I CAN'T even kill a bee! It almost got me killed! I didn't talk to anyone coz NO ONE'S there! I can't find a map, don't know where to go, got a mission but don't know where to complete it! Don't talk as if I've NEVER tried anything! I'm not a new online game player n this is the worst one for beginners I've EVER played!

Trust me, there are a lot more resources available today than there were when we started about 8 years ago, and we figured it out. Smiley: laugh

This will help: http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/commands.html

If you're not using a gamepad, you'll want to be using the keyboard as your primary means of interaction with the game. If you're on a full size keyboard, the menu key will be the - key over on your number pad. From there, you can pull up the map, your inventory, your stats, and a few other things.

To check out difficult an enemy is, hit CTRL + C. To begin with, you want to start off with things that check "Decent Challenge" or "Easy Prey." Anything that says "Even Match" or higher is going to give you problems until you've got some more experience under your belt.

You won't have any special attacks to start. Just hit CTRL + A to attack a bee, and let your character whack at it.

If your HP is low, hit the * key on the number pad to rest up to full health. As you level up and acquire more hit points, you'll have to rest much less frequently.
