Returning player but feel like a total noob again. What is the leveling path now? I know a lot has changed so can someone give me the breakdown of where people go at which levels? I read that level 10-15 I should head to Gungsgen (sp?) Mines. What about after that though?

My highest level before was a 50 RDM. However, I am starting to level either DNC or SAM.

Generally, it seems that people go to Gusgen Mines until 30ish, then either Abyssea or they'll do Crawler's Nest (or Garlaige Citadel) until 60 and Bostanieux Oubliette until 75. After that, it's usually Abyssea (though you can continue to level in OB.)
I also just found a useful older forum post relating to exactly that: http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/journal.html?user=1616793&mid=1310837405323037730

Edit: I just wanted to add that I'm a returning player who is also new to the game as it stands now, and I'm going off of what people have told me instead of experience.

If you'd rather ease back into the game by soloing/duoing, here's what I did to get from 10-80 in about a week (mostly solo). This also gives you a decent amount of starting gil from crystals and misc drops.

Using DNC/* or */DNC helps immensely when soloing melee jobs, as Drain Samba/Curing Waltz practically eliminates downtime - so even if you don't plan on taking it all the way I'd get DNC to at least 49 for use as a soloing sub.

Read up on Grounds of Valor. I used This list of pages/locations and level ranges as a reference.

When doing Grounds of Valor it's best to stay in one zone until you're done there as the EXP bonus increases each time you complete a "set". That means it's better if you can stretch your stay in one zone for as long as possible instead of moving camps every few levels. You also lose any built up bonus if you zone, so make sure you have enough food/bag space before heading out. I also recommend getting field support: reraise (or using reraise scrolls) to avoid having to return to home point if something should happen.

Keeping up to date with gear isn't as necessary as before, especially since you'll be outleveling any upgrades way faster than you can resell your old gear - but make sure you have decent upgraded weapons for every 20 levels or so.

If I've listed more than one page in a zone, that generally means move on to the next page when mobs start conning "Too weak". The following pages require little running around and pretty low aggro risks.

1-15 Any starter zone, use an emperor band and just kill any easy prey you see.
15-23 Dangruf Wadi page 2-3
23-35 Maze of Shakhrami page 1-3
35-40 Lower Delkfutt's Tower page 2
40-49 Upper Delkfutt's Tower page 1 (The hallways on both sides of Mimas, take the Delkfutt Key elevator then exit the first room). Stretch to 50 if possible.
50-57 Crawler's Nest page 1 (if this is camped, Garlaige page 2 is an alternative. Roam or camp by the first gate)
57-64 Labyrinth of Onzozo page 1, stretch to 65 if possible.
64-99 Quicksand Caves page 2, then 4 when you're comfortable roaming the room (Anticas stop aggroing at around lv70). Use W. Altepa (J-9) entrance.

EXP/hour using this route starts out at about 12k in Wadi then steadily increases. At 80 I'm getting about 40k solo, 45-50k duo.
This is as BST, non-pet jobs may increase at a slower rate - but any melee job should be well into the 30k range.
Note that some zones (esp. from 40 on) are a bit slow at first, but when you gain a couple of levels you'll be killing a lot faster.

That link to that user's forum's guide is nice...and quick.

I still use it, as on my server that is the quickest path. I wrote that guide right before merges I think, so on Titan CN and GC both had people in it, while now on phoenix most just go to CN @ the 30 range.

And of course if you want to solo, the post above is great list too.

The major change here is that everyone needs to be able to self heal. When I'm exping on any melee job, it's very rare that I'm not /dnc, even in a full alliance.

/dnc will get you stun, heals, erase, and sneak/invis. Personally, I think all sambas are junk unless you are dnc main, preferably with merits and gear. 45 tp for 60 seconds of 5% haste is meh at best. Occasionally I break out the drain samba but it's rare.

You can just do Gusgen -> Nest -> BO -> Abyssea if you want to group. If you want to solo the main thing is to take on mobs DC and below only. The exp is high enough that you will roll through them.

As for exp rings, use them solo, don't use them in groups. Many groups sync to where they get 5 exp per kill but 2k exp per page; rings are worthless in them. Also, rings are not functional in Abyssea.

...

All this talk of leveling is making me eyeball DRG.

Thanks for the replies! This is exactly the information I was looking for. Also, my friend started playing with me too. Would the best way to level with him is a duo party or alliance? Or is solo better?

Most of your xp will come from completing/repeating GoV pages and not from the mobs themselves, so as long as there are enough mobs to kill you'll get more xp the more people you're with, and the exp bonus ramp-up will be quicker as well.

The reason I chose to solo/duo is because I'd like to enjoy the ride as well as ease back into the game. For my next job I might give alliance leveling a shot.

Duo is faster than solo, but some of the camps I listed have a limited amount of mobs so while duoing you might end up clearing the areas before repops (Shakhrami p3, LoO p1). Quicksands from 64-ish (you can stay here until 99 if you want) on is definitely better duo or in a small group as there are tons of anticas in one room with pretty short respawn timers.

You guys might want to do a mix of alliance leveling and then duoing to get your skills up. The trouble with alliance leveling, especially if it is your first job up, is that your skills will be total crap. Yes, you can skill up after you're capped, but if you need to do anything for yourself you're going to be a lot weaker than you would be otherwise.

Like maybe solo/duo till 15 or so, then do Gusgen to 30, then duo 5 or so levels to get some skill ups, then do the Nest etc.

They seemed to be in a much need for VW. Or so my LS tells me. Maybe once I get my BST -pdt axes done, I'll try to gear my DRG up. But by then WoW's new xpack might be out, and Sand here will be playing a panda. (So need a Panda .dat mod ..if only i was skilled)
