I was battling a weird micro stutter on Windows 7 64bit install and my GFX card, Radeon 6800 series.
So I tried if Windows XP 32bit would run the game smoother. And so far it has worked better.

But I'm facing an odd forced filecheck everytime I switch operating systems. Is this to be expected, will POL always run a file check if you start the game on different operating system than last time?

Both games are using the same FFXI install folder. I installed the game on Windows 7, ran the updates, copied the folder somewhere safe. Then installed the game on Win XP, and copied the updated version on top of it. Just the game folder, I have 2 separate Playonlineviewer folders.

Can you just run it as XPsp3 while under 7? I know I have to do that for a few of my other programs.

I do not have any stuttering with my game, and I play on Win7 64b.

I'm guessing it does. I wonder if you could just copy the folder and update the registry paths on one of the OS's to point to that one instead.

One quick question about the stutter: do you run Virtual Box on your machine? I ask because I installed it today to mess around with an Arch Linux image, and after installing it the game had a stutter to it, like every second or so it would pause. Virtual Box installs those network adapter drivers and as soon as I uninstalled it, the game is smooth as butter again.

Does that happen even when Virtual Box is not running? I find myself having the same problem, since I installed VB to play around with the Win8 demo.

Yep, shutting it down didn't help because those network drivers are still in the middle there. As soon as I removed it things went back to normal. That hiccuping was really annoying.

Which version of Win7 are you using? If you're not using the Home edition, couldn't you just run MS XP Mode and install FFXI in that instead of the dual-boot setup? I know at work we have several old programs for some of our milling machines that will not run on our 64-bit laptops (16-bit programs eewww..). I installed XP Mode on them and installed the programs there. The nice thing is, I can create a shortcut on the Win7 start menu and desktop that will link to the XP installed program and it automatically fires up both.

editted Virtual XP to XP Mode to clarify the Microsoft program

There is a known issue with Virtual Box ******** up the graphics of FFXI. The only known solution is to completely uninstall VB. I had to drop out of LHC@Home because of that T_T
