Skill up now, never know when they might say they 'over-adjusted' it.

Oh, first day after Seigan was introduced, how I miss thee. 6,7,8 Third Eye absorbs, with no special gear, you were too beautiful for this world!

Yeah, looks like anything works. Subbed /WAR to reduce evasion and up defense a bit, used Stormwaker for Phalanx/Stoneskin, so good!

I'm rocking my PDT set (-22% atm) with TANGERINESHORTS and Melee Gaiters for giggles (Guard Skill +22) and using MC/SD/Vicissitude. I'm 94, not 99, but 6 DC pachys can't break the regen on MC/V, let alone warrant the regain; more than that and I need to waltz periodically, though. Also, watch out for Iratham, he just came and shoved his claws up my ass, without any lube. because I wasn't paying attention Smiley: laugh

For the record, the trick I've found is: have 1 pachy off to the side, outside of your LoS/Counter area, so that you're not actually punching them, then just let them beat on you. With -22% PDT, EPs were doing about 20/hit, DCs up to about 30/hit, both down to 5~7 on guards.

I went with pup, but the evasion made it annoying, so I switched to mnk (was at guard 183). Then I tried to pull 9-10, but I froze, and apparently, went up 4 levels between when I froze and when my character fully d/c'd, because I was at 187 when I logged back on. Half an hour later, I'm at 204, and it feels so @#%^ing wrong. Smiley: laugh

edit: the only moderately annoying bit is that Pachypodiums don't link, so you have to individually switch target/ranged attack (gogotrollbane)/animated flourish them to get a good bunch. I'm gonna go try out Hannequets in Attohwa, since they link and are easier to get a hold of, and are a tad higher in base level, to see how that plays out.

Hannequets are better, especially if you no one is there. I'd highly recommend doing it on PUP/WAR though with a Stormwaker though. It'll take a little to get Phalanx up but it's worth it when it does. Aggressor/Defender works nicely for what you want to do as well. Plus with Cure IVs, you can pull more than a few.

I'm up 60 (180 to 240 right now) skill in guard in about 25-30 minutes so far so.

Too good, lol

Yeah, the "target distant mob while several beat on you" trick is a well established method used by hopeful/deluded monks chasing that holy blue guard number for years.

Guess the only difference now is that its not a complete waste of time. I mean, it is, since guard is still lol. But at least its now a much shorter duration waste of time.

/war is nice also but small little warning if you pull too many as /war, pet always cast first stoneskin>> phalanx. if your phalanx wear off with 20+ mobs on you, she gonna stoneskin>>> if hp to low auto cure>> debuff>> spam cure and maybe stoneskin if cast time up for it. and will be dead before she get to phalanx^^;
also V cloak is nice to wear while lvling guard

You can put up two Ice and one Light to heal and get through spells faster. Or you can fight one, get Phalanx put on you then fight.

also a nice way of keeping phalanx on is when your stoneskin/phalanx already on. retrieve pet and take off phalanx, deploy pet as soon you took that off with phalanx while stoneskin on, before mobs eat stoneskin. to recast phalanx:). do it aleast every 2 mins

Well, I meant more having said targed mob in your group of mobs that are beating on you, just off to the side enough that you can't actually punch it, but you can still guard its hits. It takes a little finagling.

That said, Hannequets are awesome except when some jagoff comes in and yoinks the whole @#%^ing lot that you put time into getting up from EP to EM-T to start cleave burning right as your last ones get countered to death... Smiley: motz
And provided you watch out for the murex, because you can't guard Thundaga III Smiley: laugh

I'm on Hanneys, watching the guard skill roll in (in between whiff whiff whiff of me evading), 18 so far in like half an hour, and just broke 200. There's another pup here, and at least a third person pulling a crowd. I just turn where I'm facing the other mandies instead of the red one, and letting Soulsoother and refresh atmas take care of the rest. Don't forget to pull them away from the auto!

It's where all the cool PUPs are, yeah.

EDIT: stupid auto casting Bio/Dia/Poison. Changing to VE/SW hybrid might even allow total AFK.
EDIT: oops, VE head likes to run in and hit stuff

Yes, relating it to evasion makes a hell lot more sense than just saying it'll skill without proc'ing. I've always thought of evasion having its own little skill method, but weapons/magics/guard/parry all had to be used/proc'd in order to even have a chance at skilling. I'm all for blue numbers, but not everything needed to get tapped by the EasyStick.

Skills like parrying evading and blocking make sense to learn without successfully blocking. Simply becuase you can learn how to use those skills more effectively by observing. Weapons you can to a certain degree but the details you definitely need to be wielding the weapon and swinging it to get. They should just make it so you can get skill ups even if you miss with weapons. As the saying goes "You learn more in defeat then in victory."

Magic on the other hand.. You can't learn by simply observing since at least the way it's described in game is all in the head. So unless your psychic gonna have to shoot the pews pews to get the buew buew.

Guard is a lot more useful for PUP than it is for Monk. Yay for PUPs, I suppose!

This is mostly because PUP does not have Counter. Was trying to explain this to people in my LS last night. They seem to think I'm stuck in 2010. Mostly because I am(only returned 3 weeks ago), but that's besides the point.

- Holy crap Protect is actually a pretty noticeable boost in defense now. I'll surely appreciate it now whenever I'm not abusing 'stance.

- Guard skill rate is nice. Took it from 240 to cap today in a few hours in Abyssea on some mobs that probably were not ideal ones. Annoying part about mass training DC-T mobs in Abyssea to skill guard is that gradually you will counter your train to death, forcing you to rebuild it a few times, during which time the mobs you have trained will have all leveled back down to EP, unless you didn't aggro ALL the mobs and other people were also playing around with them. I expect parrying to go easier just because I won't be counterattacking, meaning I won't have to waste time leveling the mobs back up + rebuilding train.

- The new magic icons are mostly horrible. A lot of them have images on them that either mask the elemental color of the spell, or mislead you into thinking it's a totally different element (check out the Absorb- spells for DRK, why the hell do they have snowflake designs on their icons? They are not ice spells even remotely...) New WS icons are spiffy, they just show you what weapon type it is, which is a lot more tolerable. New JA icons are weird like the magic ones, but because the "element" of JAs is generally a lot less important to know anyway I'm willing to overlook it. The magic ones though, they really need to be toned back a bit. Some people might know the elements of their spells by heart, but not everyone does, and this kind of change will just make it harder for people to learn them.

I agree that the icons inside the menu are atrocious (eyes bleeding), but if a player cannot fathom that 'Aero4" or "Burst" are their respective elements by now, they have a bigger issues than proc'ing.

(Thanks for the hydra meat!)

I agree that the icons inside the menu are atrocious (eyes bleeding), but if a player cannot fathom that 'Aero4" or "Burst" are their respective elements by now, they have a bigger issues than proc'ing.

You picked two spells that are still obvious. Paralyze looks the same color as haste above it and silence below it, for example, and nothing in the description says ice, either. I guess for most of the rest that you can't tell, it doesn't matter because they aren't affected by affinity anyway. Except cures, cures are very purple now.

I refuse to believe that there are mages that aren't aware that paralyze is an ice based spell at this stage. Sarcasm is preferred.

In this case, leaving it the old way isn't "requires skill". It's "requires a mind numbing time sink".

That it was.

I'm not sure if SE said anymore about it, but the new icons will probably facilitate showing a timer for recast on the screen when they do the UI overhaul they've been talking about.

That is the big question atm. The current theory is from gutting Matsaya.

It's really not. Pup has Evasion Bonus IV, which makes generally procing guard on pup a lot tougher than it is on mnk (Speaking from personal experience). Pup's guard skill is lower, too, so even capped our decimal-esque proc rate will be lower than mnk's. You're stuck in 2010.

This needs to be fixed, asap I hope. I'll pass on the news but I am curious if anyone fishing is currently working.

Does it work for anyone out there? If so, which platform are you using?

Yea this is crazy. 40 points on Guard in about 15 minutes off 6 mandies.

I never thought I'd live to see the day where I got 0.5 and 0.5 back to back off one for a full skill up.

Look at this screenshot lol.

If having an issue with card rejected, make sure your noscript is allowing globalcollect site gcsip.com as that is where transaction is routed when I updated.

Per BG and FFXIAH, it looks like a drop from Zaldon when he guts Matsyas. So yeah, a 100+ level fish that breaks anything but a Ebisu and requires Drill Calamary or Dwarf Pugils bait. Good luck with all that.

It "works" in that things are easier to reel in, but the game gets so choppy and slow you get a headache from looking at it too long.

Nice! A new use for an Ebisu rod! :D The downside... I found fishing relaxing... having my eyes bleed while doing so, removes that. I wonder if SE sees the current frame rate a feature or a bug. Either way, I'll try to ask a GM to see.

Anyone else having some trouble quickly adapting to the icon changes? It's kinda messing me up when I manually look for spells during battle n stuff.
