Player from early FFXI considering returningFollow

At this point, totally regardless of nostalgia quality (that is NOT why I want to return to a game,) I just have a few questions: Is the game still good? Is the community still alive and friendly? (I've never had an experience with an MMO community that came anywhere close to my time on FFXI.) Is it still party driven? Should I just be playing FFXIV instead (maybe wait until 2.0)?

Your first two questions are rather subjective, so not sure what kind of unbiased answer I could give on those. I think the game is still very good- there's an amazing amount of stuff you can occupy yourself with. It's enough to keep a lifer like myself going, but I'm not sure about stimulating returning players. Friendly/Active community seems to be largely determined by whether you can find such a shell (there are plenty, just a matter of finding one). The game is definitely not party driven anymore, at least not the 6-person parties of days gone by. It's heavily small-group and solo content, unless you start doing Voidwatch. And sure, why not play some XI while you wait for XIV2.0?

How long ago did you last play, Kashej? And how much content did you finish?

The game is not the same as it was in 2010, and it's completely, totally, radically different than it was in, say, 2005. The heart of the game, the linkshell, is still the same, though. Experience points have swapped places with the majority of endgame content, in that you exp in an alliance of 18 and you fight most monsters in a group of 4-6 (heck, most folks solo Dynamis these days.) A few endgame events still call for an alliance, but it's nothing like it was during the HNM peak years of 2005-2009.

Game is better than it ever was before, in my opinion... but a lot has changed. There is a new expansion coming soon-ish, including two new jobs, so now is a good time to get up to speed, up to 99, and ready to explore new lands!

I just came back after over a year. Its a pretty good time to come back. Lots of quality of life upgrades have been and continue to be made. Also, i cant speak for other servers, but i couldnt believe how many oldschool players have come back to valefor.

I started playing in Rise of the Zilart and quit during Treasures of Aht Urgan. If I had to guess something precise, I'd say that I quit in 2007. But it sounds like the game is certainly alive! Does anybody still play in 6-person parties?

Actually, I think I can focus my questions in a little bit now. How do people level at this stage? Is it solo grinding, questing solo or in small groups, grinding in small groups? Are there multiple ways to level?

Multiple ways to level.

Short Answer: People do Grounds of Valor pages. Kill X mobs of this type and Y mobs of that type and get exp, tabs and some gil. Repeat the page more than once per game day, and get exp. In GoV the exp value increases to double that of the first reward, plus you get mini powers. People gang up in Gusgen Mies, Crawler's nest and Bostaunieux Oubliettes and alliance to finish pages quick.

Other options? Parties still work as xp was doubled in feb 2011. But it's still way less faster than doing GoV or abyssea past lvl 75.

--edit--

forgot to add that post 75, almost all levelling is done in abyssea, but GoV still works up to 99, though it becomes slower due to the sheer amount of xp needed by lvl, compared to getting 200 to 250k xp /hr in abyssea.

Ah, now I understand what catwho said. I had been confused about what GoV were. Welp, I'm downloading the trial now to see! There will probably be a new Elvaan Red Mage running around soon. I don't know what abyssea is, but I guess I'll figure that out. It feels like it will be a totally new game to me, especially since I never got to a high enough level even to explore the Aht Urhgan content. I'm pretty sure I never originally made it past 58ish. Are there still quest and mission lines that require party collaboration?

I came back a month or so ago, and I too didn't really get high enough to do much exploring when I quit. I quit at 51. RDM was my main, but I got RNG, DRG, BRD and a few others right around 40. So coming back, in many ways it's been like a new game, but with a lot of familiar aspects obviously.

Currently my RDM is 61 with a lvl65 cap, and I've leveled Dancer as an alternate sub which is now at 32. Having a lot of fun.

Yes, there is a lot that generally requires a party, though you can solo/duo a lot of content, especially older content/missions. Exp is generally done in alliances, while small groups (4-6) often tackle things like abyssea megabosses. Full alliances are generally used for voidwatch. 3 people entry still applies to assault, salvage etc. Walk of Echoes benefits from having a full alliance or more (36 is awesome). Legion is 18 or 36.

LEVELING IS REALLY FAST NOW. Unless you don't want it to be, in which case you can solo your dear little heart out.

As a new player your main focus is going to be exp and level breaks. After that you're going to want to focus on getting your AF3 from abyssea (and maybe some select relic pieces) as well as Atma (atma are buffs that give you incredible power in Abyssea. Like for example: DEX: Superior(+50), Critical Hit Rate: Superior (+30%), Critical Hit Damage: Major (+30%) or Intelligence+: Superior (+50),
Refresh+: Major (10MP/tick), Enmity -: Minor

Finding a fun linkshell who can help is also (almost) a must-have nowadays. It's easy to lvl now, but some quests still are hard to do alone (the limit breaks for example) If you start on Sylph, give Gaspard or Sylvya (my chars) a /tell!

Well, I messed around a little bit on Lakshmi, but in the process of leveling two jobs up to ~15 in the starting areas, I didn't speak to a single soul, so I think I'm going to reroll and pick Sylph!

Also, I've noticed that the RDM forum is even more depressing than it was back when I played before. I gather that their role in endgame is totally replaced by other classes. Is that so? Regardless, I'll still level it because it's just plain fun >:D

You could solo to 30 and not see a single person. That's any server. But if you walk into Gusgen mines at level 10+ and flag up. You'll get a party.

Just one more question - it seems like a lot of low level gear just isn't being bought or sold in the AH anymore. What's up with that? Is gearing up pre-75 just not important? I've been waiting for a couple of days now to get republic knuckles for MNK and some armor that's better than brass harness/etc. and there's been absolutely nothing in the AH.

You pretty much need level 20 gear, level 40 gear, and level 78 gear now. That's it.

Yeah, since coming back to the game, I've noticed you level so quickly, that keeping up to date with current armor isn't even practical. You'd have to buy like 3 stages of armor at once, leave for the Crawlers' Nest, then change your clothes every chunk of levels you achieve (it goes fast). I did do that a couple times, then learned... just get current before you had out to exp party, and you should be good for a while. When you have a good sized Alliance party going on, hardly anyone gets hurt anyway. People are frequently seen running around naked with nothing much equipped but their weapon.

Well, I've been going for a while now and leveling at a slower pace that I'm comfortable with (I enjoy a mixture of soloing and alliance play just so that I can explore because I hardly remember anything about the game.)
Another question, though - has Abyssea really rendered so much of the game content completely defunct? I would honestly like to take breaks from leveling just to go exploring with a group of three or so people. I guess part of the problem with that is that I'm level 38 and still not in a linkshell. I just... don't want this game to consist of a frantic rat race for levels in Abyssea. I'm quite content sitting around at exactly the level I'm at and farming and fishing for quite a while, and when I level I want to do it in Crawlers' Nest and not Gusgen Mines (I'm tired of that place and I don't like syncing down,) but I have never seen more than two people in Crawlers' Nest so far.

Oh no, I just turned this into a nostalgia post, didn't I? Um. Sorry. But I just want to know if there is any reason on Earth (any reason on Vana-Diel?) to go exploring and if anybody does that.

The point of exploring has not changed, but most players have already explored the world. If you follow all the quest lines, you will eventually go to every zone in the game.

GoV is what changed, and it's kinda what this whole thread has been about...

Just a tip for the OP, if you don't see people leveling in the CN or Garlaige (which is also a viable spot at that level) you might want to consider shouting up some folks in PJ. When the Nest was full I shouted for people to go to GC and had no problem scaring up enough folks to get some decent exp going. I'd say once you have about 10 you're golden. If CN really -IS- empty there are probably a lot of people who don't want to key or pay to level who have a pent up desire to get their subs or new jobs up higher. And although it might not look like it, you can't be the only newish person back to the game.
