If it had a 'Hardcore' server? :3

Just log in without using windower and see for yourself.

Depends on which version of 'Hardcore' you mean. Do you mean using nothing extra, like windower, or do you mean in the Diablo 3 sense in which your character is gone once it dies? The latter would make it nigh-impossible. Death in XI is inevitable... *puts on Smith glasses*.

Assuming you mean the "die once and you're done; 'there are no continues, my friend'" variety, I wouldn't say it would necessarily be hard, just that there would be some activities that people would probably never do because the risk of death is too great >_>

I mean permadeath, yeah.

I think I wouldn't have gotten past level 16 or so. That seemed the 'breaking point' in the dunes back in the day.

Just figure though... People would carry potions for emergencies. Low level parties would be PLed 100% of the way. Most HNMs would never be touched!

Which sort of makes you wonder what the point would be. We'd all be grinding EP book burns until 99 and then... stay in Jeuno because nobody would want to risk losing their 99 to something stupid.

I don't know, y'know? People play Diablo III on Hardcore mode all the way, but I guess that's just because the Hardcore AH is separate for Hardcore than the other modes, meaning they can make more money from the drops in Hardcore mode. Hardcore mode in XI would probably just be a clusterfork of people trying to MPK other people for giggles.

They would have to get rid of the gating - or no one would be able to access sea or sky cause it would get real old having to get access over and over

I don't really know why you're asking the question considering it's really easy to tell how it would happen. If the goal were DIablo-esque in that if you die that character never comes back I can almost certainly tell you how it would happen.

Book level to 99, then grind on Magian trials to get decent weapons since those are relatively harmless and easy to do. Buy a set of armor from the AH. That'll get you AF3+1 easily and some +2 depending on class and pieces.

After that? They'll all go the same route: pay others to farm the drops they need in certain areas without risk of death.

Final Auction House XI yo.

How about this... Raise and reraise still works, but home pointing does not. You die without reraise, you have one hour to get lucky and get a raise from a kind stranger passing by, or frantically beg everyone on your friend's list to come rescue your ass because you have 15 minutes left.

I think people would be a lot more diligent about reraise in that case.

My version of hard mode is simple: no subjob. (Use a mule.) Get to 95 solo (the exception being G1 before the recent patch, which I duoed with a level 55). Actually level 80 is enough. Solo all the missions you can along the way. Note that you will probably need more than one job, as some of them can't even reach their G5 solo.

Protip: not too many jobs work well solo without a subjob.

Campaign battle and GoV alliances are allowed for exp. Mailing stuff from your main is allowed. Abyssea solo-only before 80 or higher. (I held out until 93 to prove to myself just how hard Aby is solo starting with no cruor or atma. I recommend it. Just try getting 10K cruor, especially without quests. I never even had 2K cruor.)

Medium mode: no subjob as a group with friends. Bonus if you go static such that you ding levels at the same time as much as possible.

I like your hard mode. Also, for the reraise bit: raise timer works like JA timers. It keeps going regardless of whether you're logged in or not. (Or at least I thought it did. I haven't died, d/c'd, and come back more than an hour later since.... @#%^ing 2005? damn, that long? it was forever ago. If it doesn't, then just change it so it does. Abuse fixed.)

The death timer freezes while you're logged out. You can die, disconnect, and come back 2 years later still dead. The day Alexander went down, I killed myself in Port Jeuno with poison, and they dumped my dead body on Shiva after FFXI was back up.

That is quite possibly the most awesome thing I have ever read on here.

If s-e implemented a "hardcore" IE "Ironman" server they would accompany it by adding more mobs to the game able to cast the magic spell "Death".

I'd play it in one of two cases.

1) A complete revamp of the leveling system so that leveling becomes a fun adventure. If I can 'level' by hunting NMs and tough mobs in the dunes for whatever loot happens to rain off of the level 10-20 NMs, I'm down. Add quests, scripted events, random NM encounters (a la diablo elite mobs, or whatever they're called), and a ton of fancy loot in every level range... sh*t, I'd start over in a hurry for that.

2) All endgame content unlocked (sky/sea/etc accessible) and you start at level 99. If you die, it's GG and you're back in pink/teal/perle gear again and unmerited.
