Hear ye, hear ye, honored adventurers of Vana'diel!

It is with great pleasure that we bring you the FINAL FANTASY XI roadmap for the six-month period commencing April 2012.
Screenshot
From this update on, new content will be announced in three different categories to more clearly illustrate both content priority and implementation timeframes. Furthermore, yellow cells denote new features that are either particularly important or wide ranging.

Development Stance

The new development cycle adopted at the end of last year will continue, with players testing specific content on the test server, and our development and quality assurance teams refining it based on feedback collected. This process ensures that we will be able to release version updates at a quicker pace and provide a challenging, enjoyable adventuring experience.

Development and Update Release Cycle
1. Development of new content
2. Introduction on test server and announcement on official forums
3. Playtesting phase
a. Feedback from test server participants received.
b. Development and QA teams explore possible refinements.
4. Refinement phase
Content is adjusted based on playtesting feedback and updated on the test server.
(*Cycle repeats from step two until content is deemed ready for release.)
5Content released!

The following new content is scheduled to feature on the test server in the coming months:

Content

Job-related Updates

The group two merit point category will receive adjustments early on, followed by the addition of new two-hour abilities and adjustments to monsters' enfeebling magic resistance. Subsequent enhancements to these new two-hour abilities are scheduled for later this year along with an expansion of the job-specific merit point categories.

Battle Content Updates

In addition to adjustments planned for Voidwatch, Legion, and the Walk of Echoes, previous battle content such as Limbus, Einherjar, and Salvage are set to receive expansions.

Multiple adjustments for specific jobs are also planned, as illustrated on the roadmap.

Two new battle systems and are also scheduled to be introduced and expanded during this time. One system will involve dungeon exploration, while the other will allow PCs to play as monsters.

Miscellaneous Updates

This category includes system-related and user interface adjustments.

Many of the proposed UI changes will solely affect the Windows version of the game, and some of the first adjustments made will be to introduce new icons and increase their resolution. The next priority will be the introduction of layout customization and a multi-windowed mode, including support for font vectorization and multiple log windows.

After this, we will implement support for continual display of the macro palette, and explore the possibility of displaying recast times in the macro palette.

Fine-tuning Based on Player Feedback

There are currently multiple features displayed on the roadmap that are undergoing refinement based on user feedback. New features will also likely be introduced on the test server even after the release of this roadmap, so stay tuned!

Further details that emerge regarding these updates will be announced on the FINAL FANTASY XI forums, playable on the test server, and discussed at VanaFest 2012.

May you continue to enjoy your adventures in Vana'diel for years to come!

Sincerely, the FINAL FANTASY XI Development and Operations Teams

Play as a monster..? Oh hell yea!!!! New monsters too, that are sweet looking, new pup attachments and Bst jugs woop woop. I'm quite interested in seeing how that dungeon crawl system will work out and if the rewards will be worth it (hell as long as its fun, that's all I care about, we all know FFXI needs a new breath of life ASAP). That new gear looked pretty nifty too. Was really hoping for like a big surprise or announcement but eh =/.

Edit: almost forgot...new UI and upgrades for windows version holy shi...

Hhho'kay, soh,

Job Adjustments:
Generic:
Assuming the Job Merit adjustments are the same **** they're already doing
2 hour merits they've already discussed, and I assume the further additions to job merits are as a method to enhance said new 2hours, since that's what they implied before.
Rng: lol, they've totally got the problem down with EES, rite gaiz? It generates so much enmity from the damage it doesn't do because it lolmissed! THAT'S why no one uses it!
Ranged WS/Ability changes, and ranged delay changes; I'm not really sure what to think here.
Enfeebling adjustments will need to be seen before I can comment
Don't give a **** about parrying/guarding, parry will still be eh, and guard will still suck, no matter what they do to them.
Drk: I assume this is good news? or at least "Hey, they're not nerfing us. It could be worse"
Mnk: Why the **** do they want to touch boost? It doesn't need anything... C'mon SE, don't ******* touch monk, you haven't needed to since you lowered chakra's recast from 15 minutes to 5. It's perfectly fine the way it is.
Smn: Er... sure, ok. I'll wait to see what it does before I bother caring.
Bst: Good for you guys.
Pup: They're seriously going to waste time with ******* Tactical Processor? Smn gets a new avatar, Bst gets new familiars, pup gets ******* Tactical Processor adjustments? What? I'm not saying we need a new puppet, because we really don't, but seriously, of ALL the attachments that need tweaking, they pick the one that no one's ever going to use no matter what they do to it....
Screenshot

Battle Content:
Everything: I'll wait and see what they're doing/adding exactly before I comment, but
Play-as-a-monster: lolwut? Can't wait to see how they explain that, lore-wise....

Misc:
Testimonies: ....why? They're not hard to get... They've never been hard to get...
Guild Purchase Wait time reduction: Too little, too late, no point if they're doing anything other than getting rid of it outright, because it's already so low that it barely slows people down once they've got it muscle-memorized.
Fellows/Shami adjustments: ...sure ok.
Relic +1, Limbus, and Crafting wait time reductions: good **** across the board, here.

UI stuff:
Icon Overhaul: ******* finally.
Multi-window mode and Customization: Sounds good on paper.... but I'm not holding my breath.
Three-rowed macro palette: Great, more 6-line macros. Have they still not gotten that the problem with macros is the 6 line limit? or did they say that there's nothing they can do about that and I just missed it?
Multiple log windows: ....I'm not sure what to think about this, but it's not something I'd probably ever use, honestly. Log Tabs, maybe, but I don't have the attention span for two chat logs.

Overall: Even more vague than their usual level of vagueness with these roadmaps, I'm not really holding my breath.

Doesn't sound very good at all, UI stuff is ok I guess :/ Seems odd they are making dual boxing easier within the UI when all the new content makes having multiple accounts pointless, professor dumbass thought that up I guess. Yet another reason Abyssea was awesome, they made more money from alt's with that content than anything ever before.

I keep checking back on FFXI while I play betas for other MMOs because I would love to resub to XI in addition to my other games, if they started trying again with the content I would in a heartbeat, but this is even worse than the horrible trash they put out over the last year that made many quit. Sad.

I think many are expecting something from Vanafest, an expansion or something. If not and this is it, it speaks volumes of how they value their XI playerbase now.

That roadmap is laughable, 6 months subscription fees money well spent?

This. Its the one glimmer of hope I have. I don't think I can take another year of re-adjusted content and UI tweaks.

A new dungeon crawl system at least, maybe it will turn out decent.

Dungeon Crawl and Salvage revision sound fun.

Everything else is filler.

Edit: If you're reading my feedback, please make Dungeon Crawl the new direction the game is headed. I'm sick and tired of re-skinned years (re-skin Dyna, re-skin Sky, re-skin Limbus....) These were fun the first time. There is a reason people stopped doing them and it wasn't necessarily because they got all the gear from them.

Good stuff if you're already playing and plan to stick around, not so much good stuff if you've quit and are looking for a reason to come back. How feasible is a new expansion with the PS2 still being around for this game? Is it even possible? I mean possible without re-skinning zones à la WotG? At some point I think they should just keep minimal support around for the ps2, but keep on building for PC players. At some point, if you're that attached to the game, you can find a used PC for 20$ that can run FFXI.

You can get a cheap *** piece of **** pc and it'll still run FFXI better than a ps2. When I jumped from ps2 to pc, I jumped onto a garbage desktop with like, a 5 year old graphics card, onboard sound, 500ish MHz processor (I don't remember what the exact value was) and 512MB of RAM, and that was the month wotg was released. That piece of garbage STILL ran FFXI three times better than my ps2...

As someone who played for years on Xbox before making the jump to PC, I hate saying they should ditch a console that still has active players. But if the PS2 is really what's holding back development of a new expansion, well they're going to have to choose between ps2 support and the continued life of FFXI at some point.

I know one of the biggest gripes people have about switching to PC is they can play on ps2/Xbox from the recliner. Thats what kept me from switching for the longest time. A cheap 20' HDMI cable and wired xbox controller off eBay solved it though. And once you see the improvement in graphics from an Xbox to PC after tweaking your settings....well my jaw hit the floor at least. I've never seen the ps2 version in person but can only imagine the change is even more impressive.

My favorite change from ps2 to pc was having both "Misc" and "Misc 2". Why the **** can't you turn off weather and **** on ps2? Smiley: oyvey **** was obvious ps2 limitations from day 1, they should have seen it coming.

How to play FFXI from a couch on your PC:

1. Any PC with an HDMI out
2. Wireless USB keyboard, mouse
3. Wireless USB controller
4. Space on the couch to set these components when not in use

Nothing like FFXI on a 40" 1080p television at HD resolutions to make the game all shiny again.

For a 7-8 month roadmap, it seems like a nice mix of brand new events and revamps of older content. Looking forward to the Dungeon Crawl system! I agree this roadmap wouldn't necessarily bring any people back but it will certainly keep people who stay busy. Limbus and Salvage are 2 of my favorite events in the game so it will be nice to revisit them.

Any larger announcements about expansions and the like will of course be a hot topic at Vana'fest.

Yeah. Not sure why you think it's laughable as it contains a mix of new events, revamped older events, a host of job adjustments, and UI upgrades. I don't think it's bad for what amounts to 7 months. I agree that people expecting any more will have to wait till Vana'fest.

I have done this on a 46" TV. The only thing that kills it for me is the unbelievably small text. Is there any current way to increase text size?

I was actually thinking maybe the graphical overhaul thats coming will remedy this.

I thought they were adding both Atomos and Cait Sith avatars. Did they end up scrapping Atomos then? Or since he was meant to be a 2hr only avatar, is SE trying to pass him off as SMN's new 2hr?

SE needs to get this idea of 2 hr only avatars out of their heads. SMN doesn't need another 2 hr only avatar, the ones they gave us now are incredibly weak, inaccurate and have a very limited use even in abyssea when recovery chests are frequent.

looks a little half assed lost of the stuff they put in there are barely noteworthy they must be down to like 3-4 ppl working on this games if specific Job related stuff makes it on the road map, i give them until vanafest to announce an expansion or i think its really time to part ways.
Seriously the whole top portion of the road map is like 2 days worth of work for any decent programmer including testing and lengthy lunch breaks.
Not gonna pay them full price for a game that only gets minimum attention, cant believe they are still not done revamping old sh*t... give us new content already how hard can it be... revamping all that sh*t is just wasting time that could be spend on new content.

There is some interesting stuff here, but yeah... I agree with the half-assed comment. I'm not really excited by rehashed Limbus, Salvage, and Einherjar. They could be decent, but I really want to move on from the past. The dungeon crawl I worry will be along the same lines as VW or Neo-Nyzul. I'd love it if, while being something fresh and new, could also be something that recaptures the vibe of Abyssea. I'd be an absolute fool to get my hopes up for that though.

What could they possibly do to Boost? I shudder to think.

So we only get Cait Sith with no sign of Atomos? I wonder if they'll address that. I just hope they make Cait Sith decently useful and not a horrendous pain to obtain. If she requires Wotg completion I do have that covered at least.

New familiars sounds nice. I hope we finally get our scorpion and a GOOD Aquan type. Unless I'm missing something we haven't gotten an Aquan besides that godforsaken frog since the cap increase. The adjustments part scares me though.

New areas for our Adventuring Fellows? I wonder where, and if they got past their laughable worry about the "lore."

Where did this playing as a monster thing come from? That doesn't sound terribly interesting to me and I have 2 pet jobs leveled. You'd think I'd be all into that.

Umm i think u have it wrong, they shouldnt give anymore 2hr only summons because alexander is already the best 2hr in the game so if they add any other 2hr only they will never see use
