Hear ye, hear ye, honored adventurers of Vana'diel!

It is with great pleasure that we bring you the FINAL FANTASY XI roadmap for the six-month period commencing April 2012.
Screenshot
From this update on, new content will be announced in three different categories to more clearly illustrate both content priority and implementation timeframes. Furthermore, yellow cells denote new features that are either particularly important or wide ranging.

Development Stance

The new development cycle adopted at the end of last year will continue, with players testing specific content on the test server, and our development and quality assurance teams refining it based on feedback collected. This process ensures that we will be able to release version updates at a quicker pace and provide a challenging, enjoyable adventuring experience.

Development and Update Release Cycle
1. Development of new content
2. Introduction on test server and announcement on official forums
3. Playtesting phase
a. Feedback from test server participants received.
b. Development and QA teams explore possible refinements.
4. Refinement phase
Content is adjusted based on playtesting feedback and updated on the test server.
(*Cycle repeats from step two until content is deemed ready for release.)
5Content released!

The following new content is scheduled to feature on the test server in the coming months:

Content

Job-related Updates

The group two merit point category will receive adjustments early on, followed by the addition of new two-hour abilities and adjustments to monsters' enfeebling magic resistance. Subsequent enhancements to these new two-hour abilities are scheduled for later this year along with an expansion of the job-specific merit point categories.

Battle Content Updates

Screenshot
In addition to adjustments planned for Voidwatch, Legion, and the Walk of Echoes, previous battle content such as Limbus, Einherjar, and Salvage are set to receive expansions.

Multiple adjustments for specific jobs are also planned, as illustrated on the roadmap.

Two new battle systems and are also scheduled to be introduced and expanded during this time. One system will involve dungeon exploration, while the other will allow PCs to play as monsters.

Miscellaneous Updates

This category includes system-related and user interface adjustments.

Many of the proposed UI changes will solely affect the Windows version of the game, and some of the first adjustments made will be to introduce new icons and increase their resolution. The next priority will be the introduction of layout customization and a multi-windowed mode, including support for font vectorization and multiple log windows.

After this, we will implement support for continual display of the macro palette, and explore the possibility of displaying recast times in the macro palette.

Fine-tuning Based on Player Feedback

There are currently multiple features displayed on the roadmap that are undergoing refinement based on user feedback. New features will also likely be introduced on the test server even after the release of this roadmap, so stay tuned!

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Further details that emerge regarding these updates will be announced on the FINAL FANTASY XI forums, playable on the test server, and discussed at VanaFest 2012.

May you continue to enjoy your adventures in Vana'diel for years to come!

Sincerely, the FINAL FANTASY XI Development and Operations Teams

Play as a monster..? Oh **** yea!!!! New monsters too, that are sweet looking, new pup attachments and Bst jugs woop woop. I'm quite interested in seeing how that dungeon crawl system will work out and if the rewards will be worth it (hell as long as its fun, that's all I care about, we all know FFXI needs a new breath of life ASAP). That new gear looked pretty nifty too. Was really hoping for like a big surprise or announcement but eh =/.

Edit: almost forgot...new UI and upgrades for windows version holy shi...

Hhho'kay, soh,

Job Adjustments:
Generic:
Assuming the Job Merit adjustments are the same **** they're already doing
2 hour merits they've already discussed, and I assume the further additions to job merits are as a method to enhance said new 2hours, since that's what they implied before.
Rng: lol, they've totally got the problem down with EES, rite gaiz? It generates so much enmity from the damage it doesn't do because it lolmissed! THAT'S why no one uses it!
Ranged WS/Ability changes, and ranged delay changes; I'm not really sure what to think here.
Enfeebling adjustments will need to be seen before I can comment
Don't give a **** about parrying/guarding, parry will still be eh, and guard will still suck, no matter what they do to them.
Drk: I assume this is good news? or at least "Hey, they're not nerfing us. It could be worse"
Mnk: Why the **** do they want to touch boost? It doesn't need anything... C'mon SE, don't **** touch monk, you haven't needed to since you lowered chakra's recast from 15 minutes to 5. It's perfectly fine the way it is.
Smn: Er... sure, ok. I'll wait to see what it does before I bother caring.
Bst: Good for you guys.
Pup: They're seriously going to waste time with **** Tactical Processor? Smn gets a new avatar, Bst gets new familiars, pup gets **** Tactical Processor adjustments? What? I'm not saying we need a new puppet, because we really don't, but seriously, of ALL the attachments that need tweaking, they pick the one that no one's ever going to use no matter what they do to it....
Screenshot

Battle Content:
Everything: I'll wait and see what they're doing/adding exactly before I comment, but
Play-as-a-monster: lolwut? Can't wait to see how they explain that, lore-wise....

Misc:
Testimonies: ....why? They're not hard to get... They've never been hard to get...
Guild Purchase Wait time reduction: Too little, too late, no point if they're doing anything other than getting rid of it outright, because it's already so low that it barely slows people down once they've got it muscle-memorized.
Fellows/Shami adjustments: ...sure ok.
Relic +1, Limbus, and Crafting wait time reductions: good **** across the board, here.

UI stuff:
Icon Overhaul: **** finally.
Multi-window mode and Customization: Sounds good on paper.... but I'm not holding my breath.
Three-rowed macro palette: Great, more 6-line macros. Have they still not gotten that the problem with macros is the 6 line limit? or did they say that there's nothing they can do about that and I just missed it?
Multiple log windows: ....I'm not sure what to think about this, but it's not something I'd probably ever use, honestly. Log Tabs, maybe, but I don't have the attention span for two chat logs.

Overall: Even more vague than their usual level of vagueness with these roadmaps, I'm not really holding my breath.

Doesn't sound very good at all, UI stuff is ok I guess :/ Seems odd they are making dual boxing easier within the UI when all the new content makes having multiple accounts pointless, professor dumbass thought that up I guess. Yet another reason Abyssea was awesome, they made more money from alt's with that content than anything ever before.

I keep checking back on FFXI while I play betas for other MMOs because I would love to resub to XI in addition to my other games, if they started trying again with the content I would in a heartbeat, but this is even worse than the horrible trash they put out over the last year that made many quit. Sad.

I think many are expecting something from Vanafest, an expansion or something. If not and this is it, it speaks volumes of how they value their XI playerbase now.

That roadmap is laughable, 6 months subscription fees money well spent?

This. Its the one glimmer of hope I have. I don't think I can take another year of re-adjusted content and UI tweaks.

A new dungeon crawl system at least, maybe it will turn out decent.

Dungeon Crawl and Salvage revision sound fun.

Everything else is filler.

Edit: If you're reading my feedback, please make Dungeon Crawl the new direction the game is headed. I'm sick and tired of re-skinned years (re-skin Dyna, re-skin Sky, re-skin Limbus....) These were fun the first time. There is a reason people stopped doing them and it wasn't necessarily because they got all the gear from them.

Good stuff if you're already playing and plan to stick around, not so much good stuff if you've quit and are looking for a reason to come back. How feasible is a new expansion with the PS2 still being around for this game? Is it even possible? I mean possible without re-skinning zones à la WotG? At some point I think they should just keep minimal support around for the ps2, but keep on building for PC players. At some point, if you're that attached to the game, you can find a used PC for 20$ that can run FFXI.

You can get a cheap **** piece of **** pc and it'll still run FFXI better than a ps2. When I jumped from ps2 to pc, I jumped onto a garbage desktop with like, a 5 year old graphics card, onboard sound, 500ish MHz processor (I don't remember what the exact value was) and 512MB of RAM, and that was the month wotg was released. That piece of garbage STILL ran FFXI three times better than my ps2...

As someone who played for years on Xbox before making the jump to PC, I hate saying they should ditch a console that still has active players. But if the PS2 is really what's holding back development of a new expansion, well they're going to have to choose between ps2 support and the continued life of FFXI at some point.

I know one of the biggest gripes people have about switching to PC is they can play on ps2/Xbox from the recliner. Thats what kept me from switching for the longest time. A cheap 20' HDMI cable and wired xbox controller off eBay solved it though. And once you see the improvement in graphics from an Xbox to PC after tweaking your settings....well my jaw hit the floor at least. I've never seen the ps2 version in person but can only imagine the change is even more impressive.

My favorite change from ps2 to pc was having both "Misc" and "Misc 2". Why the **** can't you turn off weather and **** on ps2? Smiley: oyvey **** was obvious ps2 limitations from day 1, they should have seen it coming.

How to play FFXI from a couch on your PC:

1. Any PC with an HDMI out
2. Wireless USB keyboard, mouse
3. Wireless USB controller
4. Space on the couch to set these components when not in use

Nothing like FFXI on a 40" 1080p television at HD resolutions to make the game all shiny again.

For a 7-8 month roadmap, it seems like a nice mix of brand new events and revamps of older content. Looking forward to the Dungeon Crawl system! I agree this roadmap wouldn't necessarily bring any people back but it will certainly keep people who stay busy. Limbus and Salvage are 2 of my favorite events in the game so it will be nice to revisit them.

Any larger announcements about expansions and the like will of course be a hot topic at Vana'fest.

Yeah. Not sure why you think it's laughable as it contains a mix of new events, revamped older events, a host of job adjustments, and UI upgrades. I don't think it's bad for what amounts to 7 months. I agree that people expecting any more will have to wait till Vana'fest.

I have done this on a 46" TV. The only thing that kills it for me is the unbelievably small text. Is there any current way to increase text size?

I was actually thinking maybe the graphical overhaul thats coming will remedy this.

I thought they were adding both Atomos and Cait Sith avatars. Did they end up scrapping Atomos then? Or since he was meant to be a 2hr only avatar, is SE trying to pass him off as SMN's new 2hr?

SE needs to get this idea of 2 hr only avatars out of their heads. SMN doesn't need another 2 hr only avatar, the ones they gave us now are incredibly weak, inaccurate and have a very limited use even in abyssea when recovery chests are frequent.

looks a little half assed lost of the stuff they put in there are barely noteworthy they must be down to like 3-4 ppl working on this games if specific Job related stuff makes it on the road map, i give them until vanafest to announce an expansion or i think its really time to part ways.
Seriously the whole top portion of the road map is like 2 days worth of work for any decent programmer including testing and lengthy lunch breaks.
Not gonna pay them full price for a game that only gets minimum attention, cant believe they are still not done revamping old sh*t... give us new content already how hard can it be... revamping all that sh*t is just wasting time that could be spend on new content.

There is some interesting stuff here, but yeah... I agree with the half-assed comment. I'm not really excited by rehashed Limbus, Salvage, and Einherjar. They could be decent, but I really want to move on from the past. The dungeon crawl I worry will be along the same lines as VW or Neo-Nyzul. I'd love it if, while being something fresh and new, could also be something that recaptures the vibe of Abyssea. I'd be an absolute fool to get my hopes up for that though.

What could they possibly do to Boost? I shudder to think.

So we only get Cait Sith with no sign of Atomos? I wonder if they'll address that. I just hope they make Cait Sith decently useful and not a horrendous pain to obtain. If she requires Wotg completion I do have that covered at least.

New familiars sounds nice. I hope we finally get our scorpion and a GOOD Aquan type. Unless I'm missing something we haven't gotten an Aquan besides that godforsaken frog since the cap increase. The adjustments part scares me though.

New areas for our Adventuring Fellows? I wonder where, and if they got past their laughable worry about the "lore."

Where did this playing as a monster thing come from? That doesn't sound terribly interesting to me and I have 2 pet jobs leveled. You'd think I'd be all into that.

No he has it right. Odin barely does much for a 2HR and Alex has his situational uses for PD. I'd rather have atomos be free floating like the maws, give him a few of his abilities and leave it at that.

LOL, exactly what I was thinking. PLAY AS A MONSTER!! DUNGEON CRAWLING!! is gonna be a massive disappointment if it turns out to be "hey remember Pankration? And MMM?" (surprised nobody else associated the dungeon crawl with MMM already, seeing as how S-E referred to MMM as a system to generate custom dungeons in all the preliminary talk about it, getting people irrationally excited for what was to come)

DosenMilch wrote:

Gotta agree with that. DRK getting fast cast for dark magic? A couple new PUP attachments, and a reworking of one existing attachment? These are minor version update notes, not 8 month roadmap highlights! And hell, the PUP attachment stuff is scheduled for NOVEMBER. They're really talking about minor stuff like that planned for more than half a year from now???

Runespider wrote:

I don't think they mean two main display windows. More like a separate chat log window, those kinds of things.

You mean other than 3rd party Windower? Does seem reasonable to think that the UI overhaul, multiple windows, font vectorization, etc. may result in the ability to have readable text in the official client on an HDTV though. And speaking of "that which shall not be named", nice to see S-E coming beyond fashionably late to the party on showing recast timers. Oh wait, they're just going to "explore the possibility of displaying recast times in the macro palette".

One can hope that they're just stretching these updates as thin as it seems because they're working on an expansion to be announced at Vanafest. I wouldn't get my hopes up too high though.

Agree. I was playing devils advocate when I wrote that. There is no such thing as any one "best" 2hr because different 2hrs cater to different situations, and there are many that are classified as "really strong".

Getting back on topic though, in my opinion the Alexander and Odin summoner 2hr style is a better way to handle Astral Flow than the terrestrial avatar rout. People have argued that S-E needs to stop making one shot summoner 2hr abilities. My question for you is why? Let's be honest now, the terrestrial avatar's 2 hr abilities are quite frankly pretty **** weak. Diabolos is laughable, searing light is pathetic, and the other 7 "main" avatar 2hr abilities don't do any more damage than a single target blood pact does. The justification is that they're AoE, but even then they're not bringing in the bread and butter they did at lower levels. A single BLM Ja spell outclasses any of the terrestrial 2hrs in damage (and then some) . You can argue hate mechanics here because the summoner wont be getting smacked by dozens of mobs, but if the additional targets are actually important you should be prepared to deal with them by some other means anyway because they can really hurt you. Otherwise they're just trash mobs in a burn environment and can be dispatched easily enough with some crowd control, like breakga and sleepga, and people probably wont care if the blm dies because its trash mobs in a burn atmosphere. Lets be honest..... we've seen all seen that happen A LOT by now and with exp rolling in or AoE burn rewards like 10-15 trial kills per shot raking up nobody is going to tell the blm to stop.

Alexander and Odin break this mold by offering a unique 2hr ability that benefits either the party with an incredible buff, or does some pretty nifty damage on a one to one basis (even versus NMs), although it doesn't hold up well to AoE because its accuracy is trash then. How is this different from other 2hr abilities? Manafont, Benediction, Perfect Dodge, Chainspell, Mighty Strikes, etc etc are all invoked once and after the duration is over they fade. Astral Flow allows the summoner to call upon terrestrials to use their signature blood pact up to 3 times in a 3 minute span, but at the cost of your entire remaining mana pool (not a big deal with temps and convert, but still a nuisance). If Cait Sith offered a unique buff that filled a desirable niche it would be much more appealing than a slightly more damaging terrestrial AoE attack. The only way to make terrestrial avtar 2hr worthwhile is to make the damage not suck, and s-e needs to make eagle eye shots damage not suck (and not miss!!) far more than they need to upgrade terrestrial 2hr AoE damage. I think if cait sith brings a new bag of tricks to the table it would make a great addition to the summoners 2hr repertoire. Once and done 2hr astral flow blood pacts aren't that much different than other 2hrs.

I'll close by saying that I know the reason people don't want new 2hr only avatars is because they want new avatars to perpetuate fulltime, but at this point I don't think s-e will ever do that. They have one avatar of each element, and diabolos is sort of like a wild card that doesn't conform to the standard avatar rules with his emphasis on dreamworld statuses and debuffs (like death that almost never works...). In my opinion they should focus on making the terrestrial avatars better at utilizing their elemental powers before they need to add duplicate avatars of any element (because they'll probably @#%^ it up completely). New 2hrs that call upon familiar faces once and done to bestow unique buffs works, and if cait sith brought something with similar power as embrava but with slightly different mechanics (like mage embrava.....fast cast and massive MaB and refresh... O.o) that would be pretty cool.

Nothing like FFXI on a 40" 1080p television at HD resolutions to make the game all shiny again.

I have done this on a 46" TV. The only thing that kills it for me is the unbelievably small text. Is there any current way to increase text size?

I was actually thinking maybe the graphical overhaul thats coming will remedy this.

Actually yes, you can finally resize your overlay resolution (screen size) and background resolution (graphics depth) separately from your "menu size" (the actual real overlay resolution.) SE added that in a few months ago. As long as the overlay resolution and the menu resolution are the same ratio, it works great. For a 1080P television, I now use 1280 x 720 for the menu resolution, which gives grainy but totally readable text over the properly sized screen and nice souped up background.

SE's next round of UI upgrades will get read of the grainy text since they're going to true type. Yay.

This. Its the one glimmer of hope I have. I don't think I can take another year of re-adjusted content and UI tweaks.

A new dungeon crawl system at least, maybe it will turn out decent.

Seems like every bit of news out of SE raises the same question: What is wrong with SE?/ Why can't they make games like they used to? They hear time and time again from the players they want an expansion (new areas to explore, a whole new land/region, no reskinned zones, new storyline, new features). They give the new features but keep plugging it into an ever-more-crowded FFXI Vanilla. They get the trees but not the forest. Keep planting trees ahead on that roadmap but they aren't carting a new course, just an endless continuation of the present. The graphic artists have been busy and creative from the many monster reskins and new monsters, but give them the cherry blossom forests and sacred mountains of the Far East to illustrate, the wild plains and exotic rock formations of the Far West to bring to life, the tribal motifs and tropical jungles, veldts, and volcanoes of the Far South to paint by pixel, or the harsh cryoscape of the Far North. Let them create the long-salivated Mithran civilization or Tenzen's kingdom and Mikado, or the unknown civilization in the Far West. A few years ago I posted a bunch of ideas on what they could do in each direction. If I can excavate it I'll link it. It's like they have little imagination.

And given FFXIV 2.0 is a huge gamble, still hasn't made money and who knows how much the monthly subs are offsetting 2.0 dev costs since 6 years of 1.0 dev costs weren't even dented, one would think any business with its head screwed on right would not want to risk both and lose both and cautiously bolster FFXI since that is still their online MMO flagship. They are still treating FFXI like the past and FFXIV like the future. It's like what we're seeing in FFXI is what they had planned the entire time and the failure of FFXIV 1.0 hasn't changed their course. FFXIV has no future until 2.0 launches and until it gets huge numbers of subs (because 2.0 needs more subs than 1.0 needed due to the 2 years inbetween of f2p and no revenue) meaning FFXI is still their present and their future until that time.

Yeah, with Avatars, they definately need to create some new non-2-hour ones. And through Avatars they can expand the lore of the game. Create Remora, the Magus Sisters, Golem, carve out a role for a new category of avatar in the history of Vana'diel.

If they aren't planning a full-fledged expansion on the scale of previous expansions (Zilart, Promathia, etc), then I think it might be worth their while to create some sort of classic server at this point. I know most people boo and hiss at the words "classic server," and I normally wouldn't suggest this, as I'd rather see Square's time and resources spent on improving the current version of the game rather than trying to make a classic server, but this roadmap is really unimpressive. I mean, is this it? It doesn't look like they're going to put a whole lot of time or resources into this game anymore, which is just going to result in stagnation and eventually decline.

It's something that I've seen suggested quite often (even on these forums), and I think that the introduction of a single (or possibly two) classic server(s) could do this game some good. I'm currently subbed to the game, but I know quite a few people who are not, due to their dislike of the direction the game has taken ever since Abyssea came out. However, they say that they'd sub again in a heartbeat if Square were to add a classic server. I also have to be honest, I sort of preferred the game back before Abyssea came out as well, and I could see myself creating some extra characters on a classic server if Square were to introduce one.

Obviously there are a lot of people that dislike old-school XI as well due to the time-sinks that were required back then (for things like spawn camping and leveling parties), and I don't blame them. Not everyone has the kind of time required to do that sort of stuff. But I think there's definitely a wide enough audience out there to justify at least one or two classic servers. They could even get some sort of promotional campaign going for it, kind of like what Square is doing for XIV right now. The classic server sub fees could be less than the normal server sub fees, plus additional discounts if you sub to both a classic server and a normal server. They could then use the revenue that they gain from this to help expand the game on a much wider scale, by possibly adding that full-fledged expansion that we all want onto the normal servers. This way, everyone would win. The old-timers would get their classic server, the current populace would get the new content that they desire, and the game would get a nice boost in subscription numbers.

Anyway, just (wishful) thinking out loud.

Some of those additions excite me, others bore me. I've never really gotten on well with Voidwatch due to the crappy drop system and complete lack of group invites for the lower tier stuff so I never actually get my Abyssite upgraded, I just tag along with others for the items (read: junk) and cruor. Those cells are apparently supposed to do something, but as of yet I've had no discernible results from them so I consider them merely placebos.

The game mode where you play as a monster seems intriguing though, but I'll reserve judgement until I've seen it in action. I still remember how the 'monster catching' Pankration ended up compared to my initial expectations. The only reason to use those catcher thingies now is for Zeni NMs. Maybe it'll be fun though, so I'll keep an open mind about it.

The new 2hrs, from what I've picked up, will likely share the same recast timer as our existing 2hrs, forcing us to pick between one or the other. That's fine, but it does mean that the new ones need to be pretty spectacular to warrant using over things like Tabula Rasa (SCH) or Benediction (WHM) especially considering that so many additions have strengthened the original 2hr skills since their inception. Though, I wouldn't mind an AoE 'Reflect' 2hr skill for WHM which bounces offensive magic back at the casters!

Dungeon-crawling events make me instantly think "Moblin Maze Mongers". To this day I've never fully understood how that system is supposed to work, or really cared much to find out. It seemed like a lot of hard work just to get enough pieces for a proper custom map, and even then the rewards aren't particularly noteworthy. Here's hoping this one is better thought out. Again, trying to keep an open mind here.

Cait Sith. This is the big one I've been looking forward to and the one I'm genuinely excited to use! I'm really hoping they've stuck with their original plan to make her a Carbuncle-esque summon, and I'm highly curious to see what unique abilities she will bring to the table. Here's hoping she makes a huge splash on her first outing.

She's going to be very weak and have TH 3. Just to **** in my cheerios more. They said they might have to adjust pet TH again later, so either SMN, PUP or lolwyverns are getting TH2-3.

I have to totally agree, it seems people will just not be happy unless they got a new expansion - with new areas (not revamped/copied/pasted etc etc). And people just dont seem to realise that takes months and months - its all a lot of work. With lets face it, a crowd which is becoming very fussy and hard to please. SE Should just continue doing what they see fit - I may not like the whole update but there is a lot there I like and a few things I worry about (Aka RNG changes).

Its so hard to keep everyone happy, the game balance and give content which makes people want to play, stick around and come back for. If people are really not that happy only thing I suggest is you quit the game, stop playing and come back and check in 12 months (and I mean 12 months not every 4 weeks expecting something new). I did the exact same thing with Star Trek Online, after paying it in BETA/First release - a great game and stopped playing after about 6 months. I returned not that long ago and the content level and feel of the game is so much better. 12 months really made the difference, I am currently taking a pause of XI but only because since EU release it has been the main game for such a long time. I have been playing it majorly over that whole time, some updates made me furious, mad, insane but others made me love it. Each time I took a break it had nothing to do with the content it self just the fact I played it so much and its good to take a break from something that you play 3 hours a day most of the year.

Revamping old content is a waste of resources sure if your down to one coder and a handfull of ppl it might seem like a good idea but in the long run its going to hurt the game, "been there done that" wont wear off just because you put some new mobs in the zone or make a new boss, **** the "new" gear from those events doesn't even have a different look (relic+2 or nyzul2) so after doing the event a few times your sick of the scenery again and feel like grinding out the same **** all over again, new content goes a long way because well its new and you can try new things plus we are visual beings so new zones and **** to see goes a long way.

I could do without all that revamping and a 6 month gap between this and the next update if that would mean we really get something new (an expansion) and not the same old.

ff14 will never recover from the **** start they had its just how gaming works so right now they are wasting so much resources its not funny, do they expect that everyone will be like oh look v2.0 killed XI because the whole staff went over to work on that i should give it a try, some ppl have 10 year old chars they wont pick up another SE mmo knowing they will **** all over that once they have a new brainfart. Besides for the most part the whole entire design of 14 is **** you would have to make a new game to even recover from that.

I thought it was a waste of resources until I viewed it from a different perspective. These "reboots" all coincide with the jump from level 75 to level 99. Retooling each event for level 99 strength and rewards isn't a waste of resources so much as it is a prudent use of them. Why have mountains of content hogging up space on your server that no one is ever going to do? And you don't want to delete the content, since some of it is integral to story lines, and others will want to at least try it once.

You are kinda right but then again at this point of the game there are not that many new players coming in but you have a ton of players that have seen everything the game has to offer so its kinda moot to force those players to look at the same stuff again especially since Nyzul salvage and Ein zones are really **** boring looking and very linear.

What A joke. No new jobs, no expansion, no new areas to explore, no new mission, no new story. more of the same ole grind. This is a rpg. They move the developers to the XIV and leave no one who has any experience on this game.. I am having a harder time even getting on. They are shrinking the user base so fast. Lets just add more trails which is a cop out for good content. Trials trials trials they have abused this system.

Uhhm that's not what they said, exactly. How I remember it, they said, they are considering adding gear that would enhance pet TH and that other pet jobs would be on it not just beast. Meaning that smn and pup could get th for their pets as well. I don't recall them ever saying they attach it to any pet for either job.

Also, Glitterhands, Your right about sch two hour but whm? I can't tell you the last time I used my whm two hour besides a rare," there's to many debuffs to remove" moment. seriously. It's a good two hour but in today's events were mages are just oozing mp it's a bit dated.

While those would be great to have, literally none of them would be announced in a 7-8 month developer's roadmap. I'd say the people holding out for that stuff should wait till Vana'fest. If there are no new announcements of note there, then I think it's time to scrap the expansion hopes.

I don't think anyone actuallly expects an expansion to show up in a month or two. They could make an announcement at Vanafest that they are planning an expansion or series of addons targeted for release next year and I'd be thrilled. At least we'd know its in the works.

The dissatisfaction I have is we're level 99 now. It would be nice to have a level 99 playground. I don't get raising the level cap just to play old content adjusted for the new level. And honestly given how SE setup neonyzul I'm not holding my breath for limbus 2.0, salvage 2.0, etc.

I am looking forward to details on the new dungeon crawl system. Play as a monster - yeah I just don't know what to make of that.

I'm hoping "play as a monster" will be a means of incorporating some PVP aspects without it being a free for all slugfest. There is currently the ability to put on a costume, including the one Assault where you smear yourself with the ooze and become a Mamool Ja at the cost of a mild poison, but the disguise wears off if you attack anyone or cast anything.

I wouldn't mind donning a Yagudo costume and going all Feather Storm on someone's **** in an arena.

I want to weigh in on this we need an expansion with new areas to "Explore" stick everyone seems to be flailing around. Let's stop and actually look at what an expansion with completely new areas would actually look like on that request alone. In 2 days anyone who likes to explore new areas and the feeling that brings will have that place mapped out. Anyone who concerned with storyline will wait just for those people to post what and where they found the trigger for quests. Everyone esle will sit back and go "Is the quest worth the time for the reward it gives? Do the new areas offer exp spots that beat the old ones? No? *Goes back to doing existing content*" Any new story will properly only be in the cut scene phase for the first 2 updates and will be quickly blowed through and we all have massive blue balls as we slowly get main missions and new end game we are getting now anyways.

I much rather they deliver a mini expansion involving new areas(Actual new areas even if its only 2-3 like abyssea) with a tight well done storyline like the mini expansion before wether they be independant of each other or apart of a bigger storyline over the few expansions like abyssea(Even if abyssea storyline fell flat) and those areas having very specific tasks in them nms to clear specificly like an end game event like abyssea was presented. I am not asking for the exact same play style as abyssea just the same spirit. New(But this time actually new areas) areas designed to be exclusively as an end game event with a story that is actually on par with previous mini expansions. They've shown there ability to put great storyline on smaller scale a 100 times before.(The serpent general quests come leaping to mind) And until ffxi completely not worth developing for I think that keep the player base happy and also offer square extra cash flow for each expansion.

I dunno, man. My fondest memories of the game, in retrospect, was just after ToAU was released. Everything was fresh and new and exciting. I suited up WHM, tossed on sneak and invis, and explored every inch of Wajoam Woodlands and Bhaflau Thickets (or what was accessible, anyway.) That first boat ride to Aht Urghan was downright magical. People were gleefully shouting out locations of NPCs that started cutscenes, sold maps and goodies, or had interesting tidbits about the history of the place.

It took us about a week before we settled down into the meat and potatoes of the expansion, which at the time was Assaults and Besiged. But that first week was just amazing.

New zones make the world of Vana'diel a more tangible place.
