Just paid for a month with an extra char, $13.95 as usual. Then I see another charge to my card on the same day for $0.01. It's not not much, but I didn't think this "direct" method had a fee?

usually when a company charges 1 cent it is to check and see if the credit card can be used, these are usually a 1 cent charge, followed by a 1 cent deposit.

Can't say I've seen that. What's the point, if querying the card can return a statement saying not enough funds?

I'll let you know if I see a $0.01 deposit :P

I've seen it before with other companies, but only when the account is first set up. IIRC, Paypal did this when I had them verify my checking account.

Hmm I think Paypal does it because it's making sure it's a valid bank account; this isn't the case.

It's very standard, and I've seen it a bunch of times. Often you don't even notice because the charge is cancelled and looks like it never happened. It's quite common any time you're using your card as a deposit for a rental, for example. It's just their way of making sure that the card number you gave them actually works.

It's called a pre-authorization. It happens all the time; almost with every transaction you make. You just don't normally notice it because typically the pre-auth is for the same amount as the purchase. This case is a bit different because they just do a $.01 pre-auth to make sure the account exists when you first set up the credit card payment, and the charge never actually goes through.

They're checking the card is not going to be bounced by the card issuer, due to previous fraud, reported stolen, etc. By requesting payment of a nominal amount they're able to do an early validity check before their system accepts the card as valid for a larger payment.

It's not at all unusual, though sometimes it doesn't really achieve too much, as in this case.

Actually, I had a 'pre-auth' recently for a zero amount, even the issuer was kind of surprised to see that!
