I downloaded the game off steam last week so i could have a second account. For whatever reason i can't find FFXI config, and POLconfig doesnt work at all when i click on it. So i was wondering if anyone else had this problem, or if there is anyway of fixing it short of installing the game with the discs. I need to be able to stop the opening movie from playing -.- and i'd like a better resolution than the standard whatever it starts at.

Thanks for any help/suggestions

Edit the registry values manually through regedit.exe? http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Graphics

This is one of the main reasons I regret downloading my PC version off of Steam. You can't access the config normally. You have to log into the Steam client and "Play" FFXI Config.

I had this same problem too and after a lot of searching I think it was actually someone here on alla who helped.
Steam seems to hide FFXI regedit.exe for some insane reason.

Might seem like a long process but it did work for me:

Go to My Computer ~ harddrive ~ Program Files ~ Steam ~ Steamapps ~ Common ~ FFXI ~ SquareEnix ~ FFXI ~ ToolsEU (or US) ~ FFXIConfig

Hope this helps

FFXIConfig is not "FFXI's regedit.exe". Go to run and run "regedit.exe". That's regedit.exe. Using regedit.exe you can manually browse through your computers registry files and change the values that ffxi uses. FFXIConfig allows for easier management of this as you don't need to know where the registry values are located. But it also has some softcaps that don't apply when you change the values manually.

I have some other issues with the steam install that I can't find an answer to anywhere. Clean install from Steam, update POL viewer and game fully, yet for some reason the viewer doesn't ask for my token info. Yet, it logs me in with just my POL password and throws a POL-5312 error? Luckily, it doesn't go much further and at the screen that would normally be to accept the terms of service, it crashes with a Playonline viewer has stopped working.

There isn't an options in the settings for my SE ID and one time password set\not set... It's like it's an old version of the viewer or something, but it isn't prompting to update.

Anyone have this issue?

Yes.
I've been going back & forth with Steam, they sent this to me.

Quote:

-If you are running in Windows Vista or Windows 7, please completely exit Steam, and right-click on the shortcut which you use to launch Steam and select "Run as Administrator."
-If you are running in Windows XP, take the following steps (ignore these if you are using Windows 7 or Vista):

1) Exit Steam.
2) Go to the "Start" menu, select "Run", type "regedit" and click "OK".
3) Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\VALVE
4) Right click and select "Permissions"
5) Check the "Allow" boxes for "Admin" and "System" for both "Full control" and "Read".

Then verify the GCF for this game: Title: Verifying Game Cache Files (GCF) Link: http://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335 Verifying the GCF solves many issues for most games.

Which I did. Doesn't do a thing.
I've re-downloaded and installed it 3 times now.
I even went back and tried the original Ultimate Collection I played on with no problems.
Still getting the POL-5312 and once you hit Play, the game poofs.

I'm waiting for replies from Steam and SE. At this point, I'm about to demand my money back from Steam for the Abyssea expac and canceling the acct with SE.

I'd be curious how you go with Steam; I bought the Abyssea expansion from them as well but due to my location they gave me an EU code, not a US one, so I couldn't use it. The best they're offering me is store credit rather than an actual refund.

Hmm so looks like I better put in a ticket as well. I don't think this is SE's fault so taking it out on them by canceling account might be a bit extreme. This seems to me like Steam somehow altered the files and now it's not picking up the update from SE's servers that it should be.

Either that of SE goofed and gave them an old client with an updated version number. In which case I guess it would be their fault. Thanks for the info!

EDIT:

The steam POL client looks like it's at least 15 revisions behind.

Screenshot

I sent that to them as well as a very lengthy technical explanation of why this is probably their fault. We will see what they respond with, if they respond at all. Sorry for the questionable image quality. Had to resize it a bit so it didn't overwhelm the interwebs.

So, I got a reply from Steam after I asked them to verify that the codes I got were definitely NA and not EU:

The version of the Final Fantasy XI: Ultimate Collection Abyssea Edition on your account is the North American version. Unfortunately, Steam Support has limited information for troubleshooting third party titles. Please follow the link below to contact Square-Enix Support for further assistance

If they can't offer any support for the games they sell, then maybe they shouldn't sell them? :P

Nothing from SE yet, so I searched these forums and found another thread which gave this link to the SE download of POL which seems to have issues with Windows 7 and Vista.

I have Windows 7, so I'll check this out sometime this week.

Please let us know if you experience further difficulties, or if you have additional questions or concerns.

I didn't ask them to troubleshoot it, I asked for a refund. However they don't have the answer for why it isn't working anyway - just farming it out to SE I guess. I responded but I don't have any high hopes. Looks like I'll just grab my old ultimate collection out of storage and buy the two add ons through the POL viewer.

I had found those two threads you posted in a google search but they aren't helpful. different directory. I don't know.

Did anyone actually buy from, install from, and play from the Steam download? I'm beginning to think most folks just did it for the cheap game codes and didn't actually need the install.

EDIT: Solution found, but it's incredibly sloppy and more work than anyone but a die hard FFXI would likely put up with.

After some playing around I got it to work - at least on a 64 bits Win7. The issue is there is some sort of disconnect between the POL viewer version 1.18.00n and 1.18.00p (available on the SE website). It will not update.

Download the game through Steam. Then you will need to get the POL viewer download from the link posted earlier in the thread. Before you do anything else, install the POL viewer into the C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\ffxi directory (or whatever your steam ffxi dir is). It will overwrite the viewer already there.

You can then launch and update the POL viewer with even third party tools and get updated to the correct version of 1.18.13a. I have no idea why such an old version of the client is running (as I didn't even have this issue with my CD of ultimate collection), but it is what it is.

Dammit lmao... why didn't you make a new post so I'd see your update? I spent 2 hrs installing the game with the orig discs, and it's a good thing I spotted your edit or I'd have been updating the last 8 yrs worth of fixes and patches thru the weekend lol.

Thank you. A lot. ^^
Maybe we should tell Steam this, so they don't ***** anyone else up. :P

Well you can also take the entire Final Fantasy XI folder, Playonline Folder and Tetra Master folder, move it to the desktop or wherever, download\install the base game, and then overwrite it with those folders again. The viewer will do its check, and then the game will do its check, but all the files will pass and you can get in. I probably should have mentioned that as well - that's what I ended up doing. I moved the folder that had all the patches and etc downloaded, did the 8 gig download through steam and just moved it all back. It was only the Viewer install that was borked.

I did let steam know that with the images and my responses, but they haven't yet replied to my ticket. I didn't reply to the post mostly because I'm not much of a +1'er. :p

Glad you got it sorted out.

I just got the steam package for my 2nd account since it was way behind on expansions. If im understanding correctly, even tho i have my fully updated FFXI with my main account, to have all the expansions with my 2nd account i have to uninstall FFXI i use now and use the steam version to play?

No, you just need to log in on the account that still needs the expansions and apply the code that came with the steam version.

As long as the packages are installed, they will be accessible once you have applied the codes (might take a few minutes though) on any platform.

For example, I bought an Ultimate collection for my Xbox, but since I had already used the keys to unlock the expansions for Ps2, the whole thing was accessible without having to apply the codes that came with the xbox version. Same thing with PC. The account status is what controls whether you have access to the installed expansions or not. You could even buy a used copy of the software to reinstall after a 3 year break, and whatever expansion level your account was at before the break - that's what you can access.

Until you actually apply the serial codes in the account you will not have access to play the expansions even though they are installed.

EDIT: just a note - the expansions have to be installed. If you don't have them installed (full expansions not like abyssea and the add on scenarios which are classified as DLC) applying the codes won't download them. You may have to use the Steam version if you dont have RoTZ, CoP, ToAU, and WoG installed on your non-steam installation.

Does that make sense?

This post is about 2 years old but it still helped.
Once again do as he says and replace POL installed by steam with the version here:
http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/download/media/vista01.html?pageID=media

Other linked keywords I tried in solving this issue include Error POL-5312, POL version 1.18.00n not updating. FFXI Ultimate Collection, Steam. Hopefully this post continues to help people. Thanks from the future, Torrence.
