So is SE ever going to fix the PS2 problem?Follow

#1 Dec 19 2010 at 3:03 AM Rating: Good
Seriously? Cutting off service or forcing people to do a clean install are both ridiculous. I know tons of people have been sending emails; myself included. I was really hoping to play over break.

Why would they? It's an outdated machine that any sane person would have stopped using long ago. Let it die already and move on to a platform that can actually handle the game.

You're right, especially considering the fact that hundreds of people still play on it, and it runs the game even better than many PS3s. Say even 200 people still play on PS2 @ 12.95 (minimum) per person is a $2,590 revenue without so much as doing anything. To just cut it off and lose many of those people out of frustration or idiocy is simply a bad business decision. FF's graphics are not going to get any better regardless of the platform; a total redo of the graphics is frankly just too much work for SE. They're losing customers and fans by doing something stupid.

What the hell does a PS3 have to FFXI? If you didn't pick up one of the absurdly overpriced release models they don't play PS2 games at all. Get a 360 or play on a PC. The game is eight years old, at this point you could pick up a PC at a yard sale that can play better than your silly little last gen console.

And when did something being a bad business decision ever stop SE from doing it?

The PS2 is pretty much dead in the sense only eroge and visual novels are the main things being made for it in Japan these days. It depends on what the "PS2 problem" is because if it's the space issue that I hear about there's nothing they can really do about that, it was bound to happen sooner or later, and after 8 years it's to be expected, the PS2's HDD wasn't anything spectacular anyway. If it's the problem with OP NPCs freezing the game I doubt it will be fixed because it's clearly something to do with how limited the PS2 is compared to the 360 and PC, because I don't get said problems on the platforms I play, the 360 has it's own dedicated problems that partly has to do with microsoft ******** over the way XI nests in the HDD because every dashboard update seems to affect XI in some way.

Most people who have a PS2 generally have a PC that can play at least XI in this day and age, it's not like 2003 where the majority of non hardcore PC gamers had a PC that can only run solitaire and browse the net.

Square could fix this issue in a matter of days, and in the past they have. They are in the worst state they ever have been currently and have a skeleton update staff working on FFXI, every spare hand they have is working on trying to drag 14 out of the mud.

It could literally take months for them to fix this problem.

Who knows what's on their minds, it's pretty stupid to risk losing more paying customers in this way. Thats Square enix all over though.

Would it really kill people to consider switching platforms. Would be extra helpful if SE offered a PC installer for free with an existing account (not that it can't easily be had for free anyway but come on: we're talking about people still playing on PS2!)

FFXI will run decently on any new $250 laptop/netbook. We still get the occasional person wanting to shell out $100 for a fat PS2 and $150 for a harddrive and FFXI discs. It's kinda gross in "Gawd I didn't think people could be this stupid" sense.

People always say this but it's not always true, many new computers you buy won't run FFXI well on the new cards they have installed. If you want to tell people to upgrade, offer links to PC's at the price you are mentioning that will actually run it.

The problem is not the ps2 hdd size, the drive is 40 gb. The problem is the updates in the past have been leaving extra files behind that are no longer needed that have eaten up the space. As to when ever SE plans to fix it, who the hell knows except SE.

The solution they posted in the meantime is reinstall. If you want to play on break then take the initiative and reinstall or play on pc, because waiting around for SE to fix something in the hope its done during your break is a bad decision.

Oh and by the way, even if SE does come up with a permanent fix it is possible that part of that fix will still again be reinstall.

The "easy" permanent fix would be for them to add in a cleanup tool that can be run from the POL main screen - just pick it, it checks the current file list, and then deletes all files not on that list in the game data files.

Which still takes a little bit of dev time to put such a tool together and have it start up from POL - I dunno, figure sometime in mid-January or early February for a guess on a release date - but would pretty well smash these issues permanently afterward.

Also, the portion of the drive currently allotted to FFXI is somewhere around a third of the drive. For whatever reason, SE is choosing not to simply expand that area.

Integrated graphics won't run the game too well by PC standards for it. Thing is, PS2 players are seeing the game at what, 640x480, with overscan, non-progressive, low detail models, etc. Basically, the PS2 version runs at below the PC version's default settings. For that, sure, even a netbook would work. The main hangup in the past had been that integrated graphics didn't have the hardware transform and lighting that FFXI requires - but that was added a few generations ago to even the crappiest of PC graphics.

Integrated not-Intel graphics can push the game at 1920x1080, so really your point only carries for Intel GMA, but again, even that -will- be able to run the game as well or better than the PS2.

Some nVidia cards have also had issues running FFXI - well, older DirectX titles in general - but I think some of the newer driver revisions have actually fixed this. Regardless, most of the cards that had to run on driver revisions that had those issues are Fermi cards, which you aren't as likely to find in cheap systems. ATI/AMD cards haven't really had an issue since ye olde Firaga lag, which was years ago, so if one is concerned, can always just go with one of their cards.

IMO, it's much more simply just the paradigm shift - lots of people just don't even think of gaming on their computer, for one reason or another. These days the PC version runs about $10 - $5 if Steam has a sale - so I think it's a very valid point to just pick up a copy and try it. Especially if you're stuck not being able to log on via PS2 anyway.

Yeah, no offense but us PS2 users shouldn't have to completely rebuy and download all patches for a game, when SE could take an hour out of their freaking time and fix the issues that people are having(Thankfully, I haven't been affected by any of this thus far, but I'm sure my luck will run out sooner or later). 15 bucks out of my pocket for a copy of a game I already freaking own, and a 36-48 hour download for the patches because I can only receive 26.6k Dial-up where I happen to live...Yeah, {Thanks for the offer, but I'll have to pass}

Any PS2 users that want to install FFXI on their PC don't even need to buy the game again, they can download FFXI from torrent sites (and then run an antivirus on the files, to make sure it's not full of crap).

They would not be re-buying anything, if you want to continue on ps2 then use the discs you had before, and if you lost them, that your fault. If you want to play on pc then download the software.

Actually, I just wanted to say that clean installs are a headache that PC users have been dealing with for years. New computer? Clean install time. Graphics issues? Clean install time. Upgraded from XP to Vista, or Vista to 7, or XP to 7? Clean install time. Quit and come back? Clean install time.

We've developed ways to get around a lot of it, but at some more or another pretty much every PC user of the game has had to do a full uninstall and reinstall of the entire game and all the expansions. We've griped about doing it, but there's never been any expectation from us that SE is going to "do" anything about it.

A clean install is your fix. It works, its been verified, and people who did it are playing right now.

I have never once reinstalled ffxi, between 3 computers (soon to be 4), and probably a dozen hdd reformats.

Weren't you aware? We all just naturally assume Rog is the exception to everything we say here. Everyone just got sick of following everything up with "except Rog." Now it's just an understood rule here. Get with the times, man.

Anyone with some brains has it backed up, so they don't need to reinstall everything and download 7 years of updates.

Yes its easy to have a backup when on pc, just a copy/paste of files to another area. So after reinstall just copy the newer files back and do a file check with the game and done. PS2 players do not have the luxury of a backup of the game, although they could of backed up their macros to the server, and regardless of how slow your connection is could of had the update done now since the time it was announced to reinstall.

I thought the point was that a large portion of PC users haven't been dealing with reinstallation issues for years since it's relatively simple to backup FFXI and not have to go through it. I'm getting this from the quote he originally responded to, which contained:

Basically, it's not a headache that PC users have to be going through. PS2 users don't really have the option to just backup the game.

Real pros backup their registry as well, and create a batch file to re-register the necessary .dll's. Don't even have to reinstall POL viewer that way.

And I think you mean drag/drop, not copy/paste.

OK, so, because SE refuses to take, say, a week to work out a solution to this problem that everyone can do (our PS2's laser stopped reading CDs a long time ago, and the POL disk is a CD ; ;), everyone needs to buy a PC to play on, or parts for their current rig that will allow them to play the game.

Nothing like a community rallying together to make a difference, huh...
