This has got to be the most poor decision I think I have ever seen Square make. In an attempt for more needless security, countless perfectly working credit and debit cards are being rejected left and right by this sorry excuse for a security measure.

As if the Playonline interface was not already cumbersome, archaic, and clunky enough, but now they have to take their frustrating and cumbersome system to a new level of headache by rejecting countless numbers of working cards. Square is majorly pissing on it's FFXI fanbase without even the courtesy now of calling it rain. Think about it. They are making us jump through hoops to be able to GIVE them money. This shows me nothing but arrogance and stupidity.

Just when I thought the RPG giant was finally listening and connecting with it's fanbase, they make one of the most tyrannical and disconnected moves I have ever seen thus far. I for one believe that they need to reconnect with their fanbase so that they know how many loyal players and fans they are royally boning over.

Is there a place we can drop complaints for this secure-code bullcrap? If so, I believe strongly that we need to start dumping as many complaints in as possible. Possibly then would they realize the error of their ways and quickly correct the situation.

It was'nt added for our security, it was added in an attempt to stop chargeback. Square were losing a lot of money from this over the years, you won't see them remove this on FFXI and pretty good chance it will be on FFXIV too.

Funniest thing is, this was implemented to stop RMT from playing and to stop account hackings from happening because of needing to enter actual creditcards from recognized banks (i.e. not the things RMT use) and such.

It goes without saying that RMT and hacked accounts have no problem playing what so ever now. As shown by the countless of spam tells we still get. Yet a legit player trying this with a creditcard he's been using all his life gets rejected.

Sometimes i wonder just who SE wants playing their game anyhow.

Yeah, as I said before. This has got to be the poorest decision I have seen square make yet. I guess I just can't play FFXI because my perfectly good card that I use every day is not being accepted by this secure code system.

Anyone have a solution? Other than getting a new bank/card?

Securecode/VbV is a North America thing only (is it required in Europe also? Wouldn't think so since they have different large crediting companies). It is not required for the Asian continent, they can still use pre-paid cards without a workaround afaik.

Read basically any thread on this subject and you'd know NoScript allows you to bypass this.

Probably every single thread in the last 5 months about it.

VbV is available over here, my cards used it for years but is not enforced as such, if I go to a web site which requires VbV I could opt to ignore it and carry on with my purchase. Once registered with VbV, every time I go to a website which uses VbV I now have to add my extra password.

Is it needed for FFXI? Nope, which is rather odd, I'm not sure I know of *any* banks in the UK which do not support VbV, not so sure about on the continent but therein lies the problem. SE in Europe treats everyone, no matter where they are in Europe, as in the UK so a person in France/Germany/Spain/Italy/Finland/Poland etc.. gets treated as a Brit which may irk the VbV so it could simply be a technical reason as to why its not implemented over here.

Seriously?

1.) Auto-banning accounts who sell things to a specific NPC.
2.) Auto-banning accounts for using mules to garden.
3.) Free trial accounts to whoever wants to use them.

I'll grant you that forcing NA players to use SecureCode is among the worst ideas that SE has come up with, but they've done a LOT of damage to their brand name over the past year or so with other things.

Blizzard: 11M players.
SE: 500k

There's a reason for that. :) (Actually more than one, but THIS is one of them.)

To the OP:

So many people were doing the charge back thing to SE after quitting that many credit card companies now won't let you pay for SE's services without actually calling them and telling them that you're actually doing business with them.

E.g. in addition to having to find a card that works with verified by visa (or the master card equivalent), you have to actually call your credit card company and tell them you're really trying to make that charge.

What is Noscript and where can I find out more information on this? Also... How treacherous is it to use? Because it sounds like something square would whip out the ban hammer for in an instant.

I've done it on 3 accounts without any issue, and i'm sure hundreds of other people have as well. It's safe.

It's also a good idea just to have for general safety along with Ad Block. I think ad/script based account hackings have started to drop, but you never know.

well... I have never heard of it. Could someone explain what it does, or help point me in the right direction? Thanks.

It's used blocks all scripts (javascript, flash, etc), using a white list to allow sites you trust. It can also allow only specific things on a page, without allowing everything. You can quickly allow sites/apps with all of 2 clicks, so it's not really an inconvenience either. Their website http://noscript.net explains it in more detail.

So...? I don't really understand how this lets my bypass the securecode thing... Sorry If I am being a bit dense. But how does this solve my issue?
#17 Jan 10 2010 at 7:59 PM Rating: Decent
By blocking certain scripts, it blocks the script which is used to Verify you which then allows you to use your card.

I don't know the details, but essentially the website thinks you are playing from a PS2, based on your system capabilities. There's no forgery involve, and that's good enough for SE.

But for you not to know about NoScript makes you rather vurnerable to account theft. Most trojans will waltz right through an IE browser and compromise your PC. Firefox + AdBlock Plus + NoScript has proven to be far more reliable, a defacto standard for FFXI players, although nothing can give a 100% foolproof protection (other then pulling the plug on your PC and never use it again.)

Why would it think that? Ps2 doesn't need vbv, so a ps2 user would never be there. It's just a bug; it thinks you successfully filled out all the required information.

Yeah, I don't understand either. From my experience, you can't even get far enough for it to make a difference unless your card already has SecureCode/Verified by VISA. It will give you an error saying your card doesn't support it in POL(before the verify through your browser screen).

What I had to do to use the card I wanted was first go through the process with a card which does support it. Then after you verified it through your browser and all that, right before you submit it in POL(the final screen before you finalize the change to your payment info), you hit the Back button. Change the numbers to the credit card you want. It won't make you re-verify the new credit card.

That's obviously no good if you don't have a card which supports it. Only if you don't want to use your CC with SecureCode/Verified by VISA. I guess it would work if your friend or family member would let you borrow their card.

Depends on your card. My wachovia debit card works fine, and is not eligible for vbv. I've heard of a number of people have this issue using mastercard, and (so far) have not heard of anyone using visa have it. No idea if it doesn't work for any mastercard, or works for all visa cards, and very well could be just a coincidence, but that's what i've seen over the last 4-5 months.

The problem is Bank of America and HSBC only supports verified by visa and secure code on debit cards, but not on credit cards. I am not comfortable using a debit card to pay for ffxi, although I do have a token. I just would rather have the protection from a credit card.

Wish they had a low limit gamers credit card with securecode or verified by visa that had like a 14.99 apr with a 500.00 limit just to use for online games.

I have had some issues with this SecureCode process as well.

I originally got the game in the US but moved to Australia and have been playing it there for four years. Recently had to update credit card, as old one had expired, and ran into this issue.

Of course, the first card I wanted to use (An Aussie bank) was not part of either Verified by Visa or the MasterCard's SecureCode program. I did have a credit card from another Aussie bank that was eligible, so I signed up with SecureCode; then tried to register the new card on POL and got 'Card Authorisation Failed' about a million times. Even tried it with my card issuer on the phone with me while I went through the process; they confirmed there was no problem from their end.

The SE support chat first told me it was 'server congestion'; then told me I should try contacting my provider; then, after I researched a bit here, I called the support center, as I'd read you could ask them to register a non-supported card over the phone. They told me they could only do it if I lived in North America.

Not sure how or why that makes sense. I asked for a reason for that policy and the support staff couldn't give me one. It was quite disappointing. I wondered if there was any support at all for non-NA people but there doesn't seem to be any.

Still deciding on next steps, but if any other non-NA people have had similar issues I'd like to know.

Thanks!

p.s. For the person who just posted above me, go to the website for the card issuer and look to see if they are part of 'Verified by Visa'. If they are, then you register the card with Verified by Visa and then go back into POL with your password from Verified by Visa and try it there.

Way ahead of you. Firstly they are not part of the verified by visa program. Second of all I get the UCS-5313 error so I can't even do the noscript+firefox method.

Update: I sent a letter to the support centre asking for specific help, and did receive a call a few days letter, allowing me to switch cards on the phone. I posted the address/fax number in the Customer Support sticky.

I do recommend calling the Support Center if the card you are trying is not registered in the Verified by Visa program; they may be able to help you, if you are in NA.
