Did Tarutaru once walk the Earth?Follow

Although this sort of thing would normally be posted in the Asylum, the tie-in to FFXI is pretty significant.

http://discovermagazine.com/2009/the-brain-2/28-what-happened-to-hominids-who-were-smarter-than-us

The Boskops were a race of (now extinct) hominids that had remarkably Tarutaru-like features:

- Large heads
- Childlike faces
- Height is not discussed in this article, but in another one I read about the Boskops, it was conjectured that they were indeed a bit shorter than modern humans.

Discover Magazine article wrote:
In a classroom with 35 big-headed, baby-faced Boskop kids, you would likely encounter five or six with IQ scores at the upper range of what has ever been recorded in human history.

Sounds a bit like some precocious Tarutaru I've met in cutscenes.

They died and we lived, and we can’t answer the question why. Why didn’t they outthink the smaller-brained hominids like ourselves and spread across the planet? Perhaps they didn’t want to.
This makes me wonder. Interesting article.

There is another, again poignant, possible explanation for the disappearance of the big-brained people. Maybe all that thoughtfulness was of no particular survival value in 10,000 B.C.
There was no Lavos.

This seems incredibly poor science. The physical size of a brain does not necessarily correspond to greater intelligence.

It seems to me like no one really knows what was happening with life on Earth thousands and tens of thousands of years ago. I'm constantly hearing about how unreliable our methods of dating things are, and how a lot of what we know about ancient history is based more or less on educated guesses.

It's understandable though. Such an incredible amount of time can erase almost anything, and the clues we find today are just tiny broken pieces of a much larger picture.

I have a feeling that our textbook vision of history could be completely changed at any time, kind of in the same way Pluto isn't a planet all of a sudden, or perhaps in a much more profound way. A lot of books and articles I have read suggest that there was human-like intelligent life before the last ice age. They probably weren't nearly as advanced technologically as we are today, but it is an interesting thought nonetheless that they probably could have been, and we have no real way to know for sure.

I have to agree. Brain size has no real correlation to Intelligence in Humans. However, In other species it's been key. Dolphins for example.

I'm sceptical of the quote about Neanderthals going extinct though, at least in the most traditional sense of the word. There's some research being done into evidence that **** Sapiens bred with them leading to the gene responsible for language passing to us. As you can see from basic genetics, it's possible the distinguishing features of this species were watered down in the massively expanding **** Sapien gene pool. At least in Northern Europe you can see evidence of people with Neanderthal skull structure. Smiley: laugh

Even if these little fellas existed and WERE above average intelligence...this just further bolsters my elitist belief that Humes are the superior creatures in vana diel and this world as we will enslave or exterminate any group that dares challenge us.

There's also a large difference between the cranial features of the Neanderthals versus the Boskops. The former had larger hindbrains; the had a larger brain overall, but a much smaller frontal cortex than modern humans. There is some conjecture that they had better memories than us (Jean Auel took that ball and ran with it in Clan of the Cave Bear.)

Boskops, on the other hand, also had our high straight foreheads. Their minds were bigger in the areas where our imagination and creativity flourish.

Maybe this is where the gene that controls disgusting bastards who have sexual tendencies with minors comes from, it was inherited from early **** Sapiens breeding with the Boskops thousands of years ago.

Can't believe the word that is used to define sick bastards who have sexual tendencies with minors is filtered out, even when not used in any offensive context.

Doesn't even need to come from that. Many species are genetically wired to be attracted to youthfulness, since it's associated with fertility and virility. We consider it socially and morally wrong to be attracted to teenagers today, but in more ancient times, once a teenager hit puberty they were fair game. We're fighting against our genes and our instinct.

Consider this: All Disney heroines are 16 years old. In some states, if the corresponding prince is over 18, he's going after some jailbait.

There is still consenting of sexual relationships after 16 years in some places.

That's because it's spelled "paedophile".

The whole idea of have a relationship with any one under 18 kind of creeps me out.

Recreate them somehow using cloning and take advantage of their intelligence and use them to develop technology after they fly through school in half the normal time >.>;

The fact that it goes as low as 9 is disturbing.

They've managed to obtain fragments of 30,000 year old Neanderthal DNA - not for cloning purposes, but map out the genome. It'd depend on how well the skulls are preserved as to whether they could do the same with the Boskops.

I can tell you right now why they died out. They weren't as ornery as humans. They might have been smarter but they weren't agressive enough to survive. Humans have a meanness and drive to survive and conquer no matter what the cost that isn't matched by any other animal.

There's a theory than for an animal to be capable of developing a high technology society, just being smart isn't enough. It must also be mean enough to conquer it's environment.
