Installing FFXI on Windows 7 x64Follow

So I recently upgraded to Windows 7 x64 (totally clean install, since it was a new machine) and as such am now trying to install FFXI.

Trying being the operative word.

Following the instructions on the PlayOnline website, I downloaded and installed the Vista / 7 POL client without any fuss, but the copy of FFXI that I have (original EU release) throws a hissy-fit and totally refuses to install because it can't find POL.

So I run the old POL viewer and install FFXI that way, then reinstall the W7 POL. Then install the expansions, no worries. Then when I hit play and brace for a million hours of patching, it proclaims that FFXI isn't installed.

What am I doing wrong?

I assume the problem is occurring due to the fact C:\Program Files\Playonline does not exist. Instead you have C:\Program Files X86\Playonline. I believe Windows detects 32-bit programs and chucks them into the X86 directory.

I have had a similar problem with a customer when it comes to installing Borland Database Engine, I ended up just copying the directory across. However, BDE and FFXI are 2 very different beasts and I am not sure if it is going to work so well in your scenario.

Apologies for not being more certain in giving an answer, I tend to stick with my trusty modded XP Pro.

Sorry I can't help, but I can tell you that when I installed on windows 7 x64 I installed POL using the 2008 collection DVD. Logged in so that POL can get its updating out of the way, then installed the game and expansions.

Worked with no issues.

Again, I know that's not much help to you but it does work.

Did you download the POL client from the EU site?

I wrote a simple guide here:
http://syndicatedlife.com/how-to-install-final-fantasy-xi-on-windows-7/

The first thing aside from an active account that you will need is the PlayOnline viewer from Square Enix that is compatible with Windows 7 (32/64). You can download that from here. After you install POL (PlayOnline) open the program and do all updates required to this point.

After POL is updated insert your Final Fantasy XI install dvd. You will probably get an error when inserted because the auto-run takes a nose dive. That's OK! Open up Windows Explorer and navigate to your DVD drive. You should see folders named "INST#". The # ranges from 1 to 4 depending on your DVD.

Starting with INST1, go into each one and install the setups in there. Once complete you now have FFXI installed. We still need to update it however (I recommend a brand new install so the DLL's get registered properly.) On a side not, if you have a backup of all your ROM folders, then after updating/installing FFXI you can move/copy your old ROM folders over top of the new ones, this will restore any DAT customizations you did.

I also have designed my own GUI for Final Fantasy XI based of Brandson's work. Emiko has taken over his project and can be found here. I'll add this to my files link in the next few days as well :)

Once your FFXI is installed it actual "just works" right out of the box. Now if your the user who likes his Windower I'll be adding a Windower setup/usage guide very soon :)

Like Final Fantasy XI, the game specs will be extremely high for the time, but in about 5 years, an average machine can run it on max settings with little to no issues. Tanaka also expressed interest in making a benchmark program available.

You should have installed Windows 98 but now it's too late. Just kidding.
I think you would do better with Windows Xp 2002. I only have problems because my pc is messed up but Windows 2002 is a good program to use. I think. That is the only advice I can give. I do not know much about pc programs but I do know a lot about Video games and being online.

I honestly can't remember. In that respect it's kind of annoying that the setup files are named just that - setup.exe. Not like poleusetup or polussetup or something equally useful. I guess I'll redownload and try that first.

Hah. No DVD for me. Seven delicious CDs.

Well, and two DVDs for ToAU and WotG.

I'd have considered it if I hadn't built my new PC with an absurd amount of RAM and an x64 processor, although to be honest it's pretty hard NOT to get an x64 nowadays. Ah, the inexorable march of technology, or something.

EDIT: Fixed it.

Hah, I guess I used the wrong version of PlayOnline after all.

Man, do I feel dumb.

windows 7 has a lot of compatibility options if you look around. if worse comes to worst, you can also virtualize xp and it works wonderfully.

/facepalm

It's just "Windows XP". It's not "Windows XP 2002" or "Windows 2002". If they'd numbered it by year, it would have been "Windows 2001" anyway.

Also, for any system that sits at ~125% of the minimum requirements for Windows 7 or higher, Windows 7 will run better than Windows XP (in general). So: on a system with 2GB or more of RAM, use Windows 7 (unless your processor is older than the hills Bush's second term).

Hi all fellow FFXI players,

I guessed I am also facing the same situation that Antonov is facing previously.

Previously, I was using Windows XP. Due to some trojans that infected my PC, I decided to reformat my PC. I also took the chance to upgrade my OS from Windows XP to Windows 7 (64 bit).

1st, I went to this website (http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/download/media/vista01.html?pageID=media) to download the new POL for Windows 7.

Now, when I tried to install my FFXI CD (it has 5 CD in it, 1 for POL, 3 for FFXI and 1 for Rise of the Zilart), my 1st CD keep saying that POL is not installed, and hence I am unable to install the FFXI file.

So, I tried to follow some of the advise below by Elionara. I tried to open my window explorer and look for the folder INST#. To my horror, there are no folder named INST (I supposed thats for a later version of FFXI that comes in the form of DVD right?).

So, I am not sure how to install my FFXI file now? I tried to click on the setup.exe but it keep saying that POL is not installed (even though I have installed the new POL for Windows 7).

What should I do now?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks in advance.

Regards,
Meng Teck

I recently migrated to Windows 7 and had no trouble installing. Got the Win 7 version of POL, installed that, then installed FFXI from the disks and d/led the expansion again and installed that, let update all set. This is with the disks mind you.

Well..not much trouble since i forgot to turn off sleep mode on the new pc(It's off now). I had to do a file repair but have had np since then. ^^

I'm also glad I bought Seekers from Amazon; really simple to reget ^^
