I think that the title of this thread should be changed to: "New player? Returning? Coming from WoW? Disgusted with FFXIV? Click here!"

Lol, unfortunatly I am returning from other games such as WOW and LotR..... I havent been on the FFXI scene in three years and decided it was well time I return, esp with the complaints Im hearing about XIV. I miss the community. :'(
I m glad to hear the gilsellers have been nerfed and inflation has decreased, looking forward to get back into the world. I made a request for a buddy pass, so If I recieve one I will see you all as soon as possible, if I dont recieve one, I will see you in the firs week of Nov. ;)

edit: and also is the chocobo system still in? XD tnx!

It would be too long, and too derogatory. Pikko wouldn't like me that much...

Im on bahamut server and a somewhat common theme that I have been encountering of late - something i agree with - has been about the lack of players logging on... on average, over the past 3 weeks, about 1200 people are logged on at the higher point of the day. Thats weak, compared to the 5-6k a few yrs. back... Im gonna go ahead and say what everyone has been thinking, they need to a few servers and help create a more "alive" world if you will... Unless your 85+ or are capable of leeching in Abyss parties 50-75 sucks *** to try and lvl through, and why? Thats because trying to find, or start a party is horrible.. For 3 weeks, if not more, trying to find a pt has been horrible... taking anything I can get. You almost have to get lucky to get a party running with a fair share of xp cruising in every hr. Anyways, im not complaining, but I am a little upset about the lack of people logged on at one time playing the game per server.. R people having this problem on other servers? If so, we should do something about it... The reason alot of people stick around and stay with this game is because of the people... in fact thats close to the main reason people stick around - how cool the people are that play this game. Right? am I wrong about this? Im just saying, its almost stupid of SE not to fix this problem when its a teamwork based game right?? No players on a game like this and people are gonna say f*** this, ive got better things to do....

I am possibly returning. I'm going to update POL and see if my old character is even still there. I had about 6 level 75 jobs, a RDM AF2+1 hat (probably obsolete by now..that makes me very sad), a ******** of good gear (for the time) and had unlocked sea and done a lot of the more annoying sidequests, so if my character is still there after 2 years of inactivity I'll probably give it a shot, but there's probably no way I'm starting from scratch, but I am tempted, but doing the level break quests and all the advanced job quests and all the million other little things just seems daunting when I've already done them.

Quick question from a returning player - where do people wait while LFG? Is it still in Whitegate or do they now also wait in Jeuno?

Thank you for this thread Pawkeshup.

I played FFXI for about 5 years from release, then drifted away after getting 18 jobs unlocked and came back last week because I was in a 'levelling mood'.

All the extra activities you've listed revitalised my love for the game and I don't think I'd have discovered even 10% of them if they hadn't been thrown together in one post. I now have a lot of further reading to be getting on with, but I couldn't have asked for a better starting point.

The main difference you've made for me is that in ye olde dayes levelling from 1-20 used to be a frightening thought (I've put 10 jobs through Dunes the old-fashioned way), now I'm just blasting through 1-20 on my other jobs without going near that lizard-linking bat-popping, afk-annoying, goblin-wiping, party-disintegrating, pug-pounding zone. (Although, truth be told, I do kinda miss those crazy times).

I'm on Unicorn, ~700 people online at any one time over the last few days, it's pretty quiet but then that's always been an attraction for me.

I'm really considering returning to Vana'diel after a 4ish year long hiatus. I Played from the day of PS2 release up into a few months after the WotG expansion release. I have regretted dropping FFXI to play runescape and then WOW with my girlfriend almost every day (love be damned XD). To me there is no comparison between XI and WoW in look, feel, fun, or player base.

As I mentioned I used to play on the PS2, but in my current situation it would be easier for me to get the ultimate collection for PC. However, I am having concerns regarding my PoL account and the current expansion tags I already have. If I get the UC will I be able to just add the 3 mini expansions (and possibly abyssea) to my existing account or will I have to create another account to get all of them from the UC? I’m not too concerned with creating another one as most certainly my main was deleted years ago. I just don’t want to activate my old account to find out that I can’t access the newer content on it w/o paying another 30-40 bucks.

If anyone can answer this, or possibly direct me to a good thread I would be forever thankful. I can’t wait to dive back in while I wait for SE to sort out FFXIV and release it for the PS3.

Edit: Well I reactivated my old account and eventhough i deleted my character IDs I still had all of my characters, levels, items, and even my delivery box overflow items. I was able to add the CD key from the UC that i downloaded from steam.com to my current account and get the 3 mini expansions.

Its great to be back, and after mucking with the settings and downloading the red mage program I found on Zam, the game looks just as good as I remember it. My character name is Damienslvrblade on Sylph if anyone wantsto know. 75 mnk/blu/pld and tons of other jobs 30-60.

last september, i deleted all my characters (gear included) and content id's. I then uninstalled the game, broke the cd's and threw them in the trash, then burned all the manuals. I did this for a few reasons, none of which I'll go into. That was about 5 or 6 months ago. Like a true ffxi'er, i got an itch last week. I began looking into ffxiv to try something new, but after reading poor review after poor review from major game sites and a few player reports on various forums, i decided to see if it was possible to get my old stuff back.

last sunday i spent some time on playonlines site looking for information. I happened to see a pol report that said the phone support would be closed the following day (yesterday) which sucked because i wanted to call and see. I spent the evening trying to gather information about the account, which was difficult because i no longer had the manual. But from memory, scribblings on looseleaf, or the random email, i was able to put together virtually all my old account info. Armed with this info, I began to wait til Tuesday (48ish hours).

So a few hours ago, i called up pol and didn't expect much. after about 10-15 mins, a tech picked up the line and i nervously thought to myself "here goes nothing." I can't remember his name, but i think it was josh. regardless 'josh' was probably the coolest tech I've ever interacted with. Patient. Helpful. Maybe even empathetic (or maybe he played at one point and was sympathetic). oh yea, he spoke English as a first language, so that was wicked awesome.

After sorting out the account info, he checked the computers for my old characters.... he found nothing. However, he then mentioned that playonline has automated the character recovery/restoration and i should go to their site and about midway down there would be a image on the left with a taru on it that says something about character restoration.

I asked if he would mind waiting on the phone while i attempted to try the procedure, he agreed to. I filled out the form and hit submit. and i got the message "your account is voided.... you are ineligible." We checked our info and resubmitted again. same thing. So with that, I bid josh farewell, and he said i could keep trying as it was automated and free.

So after i got off the phone, i waited a few minutes, and tried again. This time though, i carefully read the message. What i missed earlier is that the message read "voided due to lack of payment." I began to wonder. did my last payment get revoked? I checked my statements and sure enough, the last payment to SE (a few days after i quit) was declined. So i wondered if the error was that the account was currently not active due to not being paid in full.

I called pol again. after about 15 minutes, i got another tech. this time it was a massive douche (further referenced as 'douche'). I asked douche if the restoration procedure had anything to do with the account currently being inactive or whatever. Douche angrily replied that billing had absolutely nothing to do with restoration, and that "if nothing was showing up on the webpage, it was because the characters were gone" for good. Douche then rushed me off the phone, but i took the conversation with a grain of salt.

I couldn't shake the feeling douche was wrong. Even earlier Josh wasn't entirely sure why it would be failing. I figured it was worth a shot, so i went and grabbed a copy of the ultimate collection. popped it in, installed POL, went into my old account and was greeted by the old "dude you owe us money" popup. so i paid the fees and the account was reactivated. I then went to pol, went to the restoration link, filled out the forms, and, with baited breathe wondering if i'd just wasted $17 and a 40~ mile round trip to Best Buy in Slidell, La(wasn't going to start over again), i hit confirm...

I was greeted by a list of every character I'd ever created on the account. Including the one char i deleted like back in '06 after like 5 minutes while trying to get a worldpass to phoenix. I returned to polviewer and reactivated some content id's. then returned to the website and reactivated the characters.

I continued to install the game & expansions. as of right now, i'm writing this while waiting the 8 hours for updates. probably wont take that long though.

moral of the story, some pol techs are nice, others are knuckle-shuffling gorilla @#%^ers that hate themselves and don't know sh*t about policy. not saying this would work for everyone, but it did for me. but i think the automated service thing they added needs to be mentioned in the OP for returning players. you just need the pol ID, password, CD registration (22 alpha-numeric code/cd key thing from the copy of the game you ORIGINALLY registered the account with) and your account has to BE PAID IN FULL and ACTIVE.

thanks.

p.s.
as i probably will be naked and poor... if anyone on phoenix feels so inclined to donate some equipment, <can i have it?> ;D

editted to add "originally registerd the account"
