When was 3D-Secure required from PlayOnline? Last time I played (which was roughly three years ago) I was playing on dial-up. Will this game still run on dial-up? Yes I said dial-up for those of you laughing. I just use the internet for casual surfing and ff11 ran well for me on dial-up. When the new Final Fantasy onling game comes out, do you think the population of ff11 will decrease a lot?

What a helpful post! I am thinking of returning to FFXI. I quit 7 months after ToAU came out. I didn't want to start all over but it seems that starting over would not be so bad. I've been missing the game a lot recently. I've been burnt out from WoW and I need a filler until FFXIV comes out! Your post was the deal maker lol Thank You!

thanks for the info, I just reactivated my account, a bit bored from wow and aion and just sorta waiting around for ffxiv now just deciding on what server to play, I have my old acct with my 75s but I kind of want to start from scratch

I've been feeling the urge to play again recently too, especially since the inception of features such as LevelSync and the FoVs. I was still playing when LevelSync was introduced, and I was hugely impressed with it. I just couldn't afford to keep playing at the time. Now I can come back, just have to replace a few things on my computer first.

I think things have been improving for the better the whole time, and I can't wait for FF XIV.

Is it too late to join?

The lie
(No, it's never too late. As with most MMOs, there will be a population that is already much higher in level than you. Unlike most MMOs, this doesn't matter nearly as much, as you cannot be killed by fellow players. This allows you to catch up to those already at the level cap without detriment. )

The true
The leveling system on this game is 1 of the most time-consuming that any mmo has, to level up require a group of 6 members tank healer 3 DD or dps and 1 suport job, if you may ask whats a suport job is a class that increases others classes performence. If you are new in the game and dont have any friends you gona have a few problems

1)it could take you from 30min to a few Hrs to find a group to lvl up

2)on this game you have a sub job wich is where you combine the ability of your main job with a nother like warrior/ninja but to be able to do this you need to collect some items frome monsters that cant be done alone wich mean you would have to go around beging for some 1 to help you since finding help in this game aint easy

3)Do the fact that you dont have a sub job until lvl 18 most player will be discouraged to invite you to a group making it longer for you to find a party to lvl up.

4)There a lvl cap onces you hit that cap you require to pick some items frome a quest that will give you acces to lvl up once again, good luck finding a hand this could take you a few hrs or days to do and you have to do this quest 3 different times.

5)To get acces to some location in the game so you can lvl up require for you todo some quest that will give you the acces to does lvling spot or what the games calls camping spot. again this will require helps frome other players ...more beging to do.

if you the type of player that only plays for 3-5hr a day it could take you 4 to 6 months to be able to hit 75 wich the max lvl. In other mmo the most time you would spend lvling up would be 1 to 2 months to hit the max lvl

How is the economy?

While it does vary from server to server, overall the economy has deflated a lot from the heights it reached. With the aggressive actions of the Special Task Force, gilsellers have been banned in huge amounts. And while they still exist, they do not exist to the degree that they did.

The reality!
Final Fantasy XI has the worst economy in any mmo actually more like its the only mmo with bad economy and is the main reason this game losses players to others mmo.
A new player that plays 3-5hr a day will spend 2-3 days farming gold for about every 10-15 lvl you hit so you could upgrade you armor. this makes players end up doing two thing

1) they quit the game
2) they like the game so much that they buy gold for reall $ so they can keep playing

Is Final Fantasy XI dying?

Short answer: No.

reality!!
yes the game is slowly coming to its end.
reason why? the game every years loses numbers of player little by little to the point where square enix will be spending money to keep the game up instead of making money this is why they are making a new mmo instead of adding a new expansion they are gona try all over again since ffxi is not meeting there expectation. If you read on the new ff mmo they are actually makig it similar to other mmo when it comes down to being time-consuming.

The only people who are still playing ffxi are 2 types.

1)the onces that spend so much time in the game and gotten so far that they just cant drop all that hard work. this group of ppl will quit the game onces the new ff mmo comes out.

2)Hardcore player, ffxi is the only mmo game that you are able to stand out frome other player. There are gears on this game that takes so many years to get wich only hardcore player are able to get. carrying this gears would make you a godly player to the point where your name would be know to every 1 on that server. This type of player wont quit until the game is shutdown

One sided opinion how crappy and very misleading.

I played ffxi for roughly 3 years march 2005 till nov 2007. I didnt pay much attention towards the end of the game. I was a 75sam with most of the other jobs at 37. I joined alot of linkshells to try and do dynamis and the AOU missions.

Game got quite boring.

After i had left they introduced levelsync which i thought was alot of rubbish because the main aspect of levelling in FFXI is to have a well balanced party that will at least spend 8 hours in the one area advancing 4-5 levels if you are lucky. Hearing that it is possible to solo to 75 makes me want to join again instantly. End game has also been made more interesting with mythic weapons and campaign (solo stuff). And not to forget the latest expansion wings of the godess with the 2 play on scenarios.

Personally im going to start back up possibly early next year.

But i do reccomend anyone who quit during or before the ToAU expansion for any reason such as LFG for hours, or end game boredom or drama within an endgame LS. Im assuming that the game has changed alot due to the solo add ons.

I have considered returning for a while, but I am not sure about doing it. My biggest concern is my Char is currently on a low pop euro server, and I am in the middle of the USA. My linkshell fell apart, and Partying became near impossible with everyone playing in a completely different time zone. So I guess I am wondering if anyone in the USA has a good server and linkshell I could join? My best job is a 52 whm. I don't get on the forums often, so if you could email me with info about servers/linkshells i'd appreciate it. Michael_Gallucci@hotmail.com

I don't understand why it's more one sided then the original post was. What difference does that make, and why is it a "crappy" opinion?

@ runtheplacered

Nothing you posted was one-sided. I believe you have the right idea about what goes on in this game.

Be there trolls in this here thread??? Best not feed them, I suppose...

Returning player here. Started in early 2005, been on-again off-again ever since.

Testimony of someone who has never had a character above level 40, and just started fresh with a new account and a new server:

1 - Is it too late to join?

I haven't had any problem whatsoever finding parties. Maybe I've been getting lucky, but I've only been back for 3 days and I've already got one job up to 19 and another up to 15. This game is still very playable and there are still a good number of active people. My advice to make your FFXI life much easier - look for a good linkshell! You're going to want a friendly social LS to start. Example: GreatBigSea of CaitSith. I joined CaitSith exclusively because this LS seemed to be helpful and friendly, and I don't regret my decision =) Also, you can ask around when you get in the game after you've picked your server. Though there are exceptions, most of the playerbase are very friendly and helpful, and probably know good social linkshells to recommend. The server forums here are a good place to inquire about linkshells that are accepting new players.

You will NOT enjoy this game if you do not attempt to reach out to others and network yourself. This includes joining linkshells, making friends through parties, helping others (believe me, those newbies grow up fast, and they'll remember all the nice things you did for them), and being involved.

2 - How does this game differ from <insert name of MMO here>

Community. Intricate story arcs. Focus on PvE. The absolute necessity for you to socialize - if you don't, you aren't going to get very far.

...

8 - Is FFXI dying?

Servers still have a healthy population, as far as I can tell, and you can expect that on each server there will be anywhere from 1.8k to 2.5k people online at any given time. With FFXIV coming out, it seems like some endgame 75s have left, but in my opinion this has little bearing on anyone who is coming into the game as a new or returning player. Those 75s that are awaiting the FFXIV were probably only doing endgame content anyway, it's not like you would have ran across them in Valkurm Dunes.

I've seen new people every day so far, and that's on CaitSith alone. As long as new players continue to come into the game, it won't be dying. Even after FFXIV comes out, there will still be people who play this game, much like after EQ2 came out there were still people who only played EQ.

So, if you've tried the game out, and you like it, don't let these things worry you. There's enough content here to keep you busy (and enjoying it) for a long time, and plenty of players around to enjoy it with. As it has been pointed out here already, this game isn't for everyone. If you like being a lone wolf, this game will be off-putting. If you dislike working in teams or helping others, this game will be frustrating for you.

And if you decided to join CaitSith, feel free to drop me a line. I am more than happy to help.

I just returned and I'm having an absolute blast so far. Only problem is, wife and I started new accounts, as we'd lost the info for our old ones (found it later and reactivated). We have yet to see anyone speak in any sort of chat form, we also have no LS pearls and are not sure as to the best way to join a LS. With absolute silence in the world, it's a bit strange. Once we find a LS, I'm sure that'll change though. Haven't found any parties yet, but I've been level syncing my old account with the new ones and we're pretty much forming our own party now!

Had some trouble getting my credit card through, as it isn't Verified by Visa, but luckily I have a copy of FFXI on my PS2 and found out through researching this forum that it goes through no problem there.

Mkay, i guess i posted in the wrong area, thanks Mielu for pointing that out. Well as i stated i played ff11 after its launch in the u.s for two years after it. I quit because of schooling and financial issues, but now i am returning and i have read over this post, apparently alot has happened and i really don't understand some of what i read. I'm hoping to get some friends on here before i start the game, i would love to play alongside some fun people. So let me know some servers you guys and girls play on,
see ya in-game!!

What server are you on? Go to your server's forum here and say that you're looking for a linkshell. If you're on Caitsith, I can give you a pearl to GreatBigSea, but otherwise you should post on your server's board and ask about a good social LS.

Anyone having any luck getting a new account started? I've been trying for a few days, to no avail. The customer service guy told me that it usually slacks off mid-month, because the games so popular. I find it hard to believe that the server is so jammed on a game that came out years ago by new players. What's up with this?

I doubt anyone else here has tried making an account recently. Good luck finding any of the 0-3 other people that have made/tried to make an account the last few days. That's just how much an idiot that CS rep is.

Post Message becomes Edit Message if you don't see that it might be a bad load meaning you have to refresh the page or clear cache..
