Ok, it has happened: i received a pol email from zxc12345 (gee, the original buttonmashed name!) advertising gil.
I checked the playonline page, but i didn't find how we are supposed to report this; i know i read it somewhere, but i cant find it. So, can anyone help me telling me what to do?

Firstly if it is emailed directly to your home email or from an address outside of POL (like abcdefg@yahoo.com), there is really nothing SE or anyone can do except to report to the place where that email is sent from (so for the example, you have to report to yahoo.com).

If you got your email on the from another POL email account (like abcdefg@servername.playonline.com), I think you can just use the forms for STF that you can find in the Service and Support section on SE's website: https://secure.playonline.com/supportus/index.html

I got an ingame message from some random dfkjgndfkjng48487534 guy and it was for a gil selling website. I was under the impression that only people who were on your F-list can send you a ingame message.

Except they spoof the header info so it says it came from one address when it really came from another. Those face mashed names are auto generated by the spammers software. SE will just send you an message later telling you to add the address to your pol email block list, and then you'll get new messages anyway since they change the "from" every single email. I had over 400+ of them in my pol inbox over the coarse of 4 years.

Tip: Don't have an email address that starts with the letter A, change that puppy asap to some other incomprehensible string >.>

I rarely get spam of any kind (RMT or not) in my POL email now.

Normally yes, certain hacks will break that and allow them to message anyone however. But unlike the email, this is easily traceable by the STF.

Ok I think I received those messages myself... as a POL PM, which is supposed to be only people on your friend list (if I have not mistaken) to be able to message you. This is a little alarming to the security of POL PM system....

Yes, I received a message as well. Unfortunately, I didn't think to report it. I just recently moved, and was logged in only long enough to make sure I got all the connections right in hooking up my network in the new place.

I was a little put off afterwards, thinking of a hack to my Friends List. The more I thought about it, the more I realized they had actually breached security. Now I really wish I would have reported it!

I'm not much on computers, so I don't know how such things work; but I can tell you that the more I think about it, the more nervous I get. Seems like every month people are reporting new hacks and ways to steal accounts. I'm just glad others are reporting it, as I didn't have the foresight to do so.

From the POL viewer, you can look-up any player on any server, and send them a message, regardless of being on friend list or not.

Thank goodness! I thought it was a hack. I appreciate you easing my mind. I was so afraid my system was being compromised.

Not quite. The client will auto generate a friend list invite and you can't actually send whatever you want to say until they accept. You can send email via pol viewer without that restriction, but for the in game viewable messages it will NOT send normally without one of you being on the others friend list.

Hello

I'm on the cerebus server an i also recieved a message POL PM i immediatley reported this to a GM.

His response was "We are aware of the problem and we are taking steps to rectify this"

He then thanked me for my assistance and let me get back into the game.

I spoke ot one of my LS members and they told me to make my playonline status visible to friends only and change my password.

Now I'm on xbox so security is still an issue but not as much as playing on a PC(so i'm told).

But the whole incident has worried me as the last thing i want to happen is to get hacked

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks

Drakc

You can override that. I send messages to LS members not on my friend list all the time.

I got one on Asura. So much for SE's enforcement efforts...

mine was weird though:

I was partying with some toon named Jhwl* (named changed to protect innocent / guilty). Then later that night a received a POL mail from Jhwlttzzcg6789* (toon name as a prefix + classic rmt as a suffix).

It was either the strangest coincidence of all time or he met me and put my name on his spam mail list...

Where. Off the search tool for finding people I'm not seeing how. The only bypass I know of isn't, because it still requires a confirm 1st (group list, allows sending message to a ton of people at once, but they have to be in the group).

To report these to the STF;

POL, service and support, email support, should be a drop down menu.

Kujata's was named Thibaut.

Got a new one on Garuda from opopo. Appears to be same message as prev person.

Also just to add, I did go through and make my handle onl avail for people on friend list, assuming that would prevent this at all, it possible that they have a database of the names they did before.

Between this thread and another discussing the same subject, I have come to the conclusion that these messages/mails are in fact being sent using means that somehow compromise the system. Should I be nervous? I play on 360, but I fear that gives me no security in this case. I have seen so many people in here having their accounts stolen that due to software security issues that I have become quite paranoid. As a matter of fact, I have not logged on to the game since I first read this thread.

I had a message today from a yoyoy. It was about a site that offered powerleveling and gil. So, should I just write down what the message says and report it to STF? I was waiting on a GM and I kept disconnecting.

Also, I thought only people on your friends list could send you messages unless it was a befriend message.

IMO, there got to be a way to able to send a POL message without actually using the POL itself -- so you can by-pass POL client. It is like using 3rd party IM systems -- as long as you can simulate what the original IM or POL client do, you should be able to send the message.

POL messaging system could not be too complicated to "reverse engineered." You can even send a POL message with a web browser using Friend List plus. Fearless guess is that there will be a Playonline client update sometime in the near future, and we may never see a web browser client to send POL message.

PS Corrected a typo (searched > send)
