Connection Issue from South KoreaFollow

#1 Aug 28 2008 at 1:57 AM Rating: Decent

I've been unable to connect today from Seoul, South Korea. I've not seen anyone else posting about connection issues. I'm getting POL-1160 error message. The connection was working fine in the morning but not in the afternoon to evening. Any ideas?

Too many zerglings?

Sorry, I'll lay off the stereotypes

Can somebody post that site with the 'worldwide internet health' that would always show internet status in most of Asia as, for lack of a better term, 'cluster-@#%^ed'?

Well I'm about 1 hour away from Seoul (depending on traffic), I've had multiple problems in the past, but not logging on. Then again, I just came back from vacation and haven't tried to log on since.

I'm in Seoul, South Korea also and I haven't been able to log in today either. I'm also getting the POL-1160 error.

I've been playing from South Korea for the past three years and have never had a problem before. Not sure what could be going on...

Wow, other people here who play FFXI! That's really cool. I assume you're either teachers or soldiers. We should get together. But after we can connect again. Still can't here, it's been about 10 hours now.

I was living in Mokpo (near Gwangju) for about 2 years. I found my internet connection there to be fast and reliable. Now i'm in mexico.... and the connection sucks ***...

p.s. anyone else here go the Jeju ultimate frisbee tourneys? Maybe we met! (or came to the tourney we hosted last may)

I still can't connect on my regular internet connection in my Officetel. I did manage to connect briefly to the game by "borrowing" one of the many wireless connections in and around my building. Not really a favourable way to be playing the game though. It took me about five wireless connections before I hit one that would connect to the game.

This is a right bother. It will be impossible to explain to the internet provider (if I can actually find a phone number) what is wrong in my broken Korean.

My internet connection is working perfectly fine, but I still cannot connect to POL. I'm still getting the POL-1160 error. -.-;

What would cause the sudden connection problem? I've not changed anything concerning my internet connection in years. I guess I'll give SE a call and see what they have to say about it...

So anybody have any luck getting a hold of SE to at least figure out what the error code means? Every time I try I forget the time zone difference and they are closed.

Edit: BTW, I tried reinstalling on my PS3 and I get to the same point the 1160 code pops up on PC but on PS3 I get a 0006 code instead. I imagine they mean the same thing but just coded different for the different versions.

Good job SE, you've finally caught on to the fact that anyone playing in Korea must be RMT!

So, I contacted SE...

I gave them my IP address and they told me that the address has been restricted and I needed to contact my internet service provider. SE also gave me a list of port numbers that needed to be unrestricted in order to connect to POL. According to SE, once I contacted my internet provider and gave them the port numbers, the connection problem would be solved. The numbers were:

TCP
25
80
110
443
50000-65535

UDP
50000-65535

I use KT for my internet access, so I contacted them. The English customer service center seemed to be able to understand my problem, and they are sending a technician to my apartment today (Saturday) at 5:00 to check my port connections.

I also informed KT that this was not an isolated incident with me, and that others in Korea are also having the same problem.

For now, I'll just have to wait until the technician arrives to see what they will do about this. I assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that if I gave KT the port numbers over the phone they would be able to "switch" them on and all would be right in the world again. But, I guess it's not that easy.

I was also informed that the technician will not speak English, so this should be fun...

I'm on KT as well. Lovely, this will be a struggle to fix I am sure.

PM as well and I can give you more info and perhaps we can get a group fix going. My Korean is totally horrendous and explaining this will be torture.

Or hopefully you can get across to the tech that it's a region wide issue and he can fix it for everyone.

Could you also give me the number for the English customer service centre as well please?

I guess it's back to playing on "borrowed" wireless for a bit.

Thanks for the IM Spooktc. If I have any difficulties with the technician while he's here, I'll give you a call.

The English customer service number is 02-520-7800. A woman will answer (always seems to be the same one) and once you explain the issue, she will transfer you to technical help. The gentleman at technical help also speaks English well.

Maybe if we all bombard the service center with calls, they will get the fix a little faster. Even though the gentleman on the technical help line said he understood my problem, and he said he would explain it to the technician, I have a feeling that the technician who will come to my apartment won't be able to do much, or won't be able to find a problem...
