Thanks, I got connected using this.

I couldn't get my desktop updated, however, because the Sockscap programme won't download. I'm going to attempt to download the files through other sources and see if I can do it that way.

I'm getting my laptop connected through this right now. It's already updated.

Ok the original sockscap link is broken, your going to have to do a google search for sockscap 2.4 download and get it off another site. Thats what I had to do. Also theres a .rar file out there with all the updated files, you can extract that ontop of your FFXI directory and it'll update all the files. BUT you will still have to talk to the update server to get the latest file manifest and have FFXI verify that the files are good. This will require the whole sockscap work-around thing (I applied the updates but it still failed when verifying them).

If your having any issues let me know and I'll try to find a work around. I still think its f'ed up that SE would block two of the largest ISP's out here from their update / registration / login servers just to deter hackers. Thats discrimination, what about the legit players that don't often come to this site...

Okay, I'll try that next.

I am having another odd problem though. I can get windower to work on the computer that is not updated (the desktop) through the Freecap thing, but I cannot get it to load at all on the laptop (which is updated through a wireless connection). Regular POL runs on the laptop, just not the windower. It gives me a bunch of lines of messages that I cannot make heads or tails of.

Thank you for all the help.

Need the exact error message to be able to pinpoint the problem. Also note, Freecap works with windower (using the launcher.exe as the target) but won't actually update due to the port pug. Sockscap will NOT launch windower (it'll error out, as the hocks it uses are incompatible with windowers own hooks) but it will launch the polboot.exe for Playonline, and it'll allow you to connect to the update server and download the updates.

Also on a note, Freecap uses a X.X.X.X/Y setup to define the direct connection ports (required to actually talk to the world servers) but sockscap uses a different format. Sockscap uses a X.X.X. with the last digit dropped to represent and entire subnet. So Freecap would be 220.0.0.0/8 to tell it to direct connect the entire 220.X.X.X network, but Sockscap needs 220. to tell it the same thing.

Sockscap is the inferior program, it just allows you to actually get updates, which is kinda a requirement to initially get FFXI playable. Once your updates are good, switch to Freecap and play using that.

And last note, RTFM (Read the Fricking Manual). The help files are where I got the information for the GUI and the various formats and where to put things.

I'm still on vacation so I haven't played FFXI since the South Korea problems began. However, I'm coming back on Monday and I was wondering, has anything been figured out yet with the connection, or is everyone still waiting it out?

It seems that it's not a Korea wide issue nor an ISP wide issue. I am caught up in the POL-1160 and use LG, but my friend that uses the same ISP (we have to being Army) has no issue logging in at all. So it may be possible to just see if your ISP can switch out your router modem and find one that isn't blocked.

edit: fixed

What does "ISP can switch out your router and find one that isn't blocked" mean?

Also besides a proxy or switching ISPs is there something else that we can do to play the game? I heard Sept 30 the KT/LG ISPs will have their connections back, so maybe that is when we will be able to play?

yea I'm still SOL, I wrote them an email, tried to call but ran out of time. I'm going wake up extremely early and call them tomorrow.

P.S. Don't bother calling EU (if you're from US), they can't help you. I knew that, but it was worth a try lol.

What I was saying was try having LG/SKT change out your Modem.

*Sorry, I was writing this while getting ready for work and didn't proof read.

How much does changing the modem cost and does it work 100% or will I have to call the guys until they find a modem that works?

And how exactly would that explain us guys who have in-home wiring directly to the backbone (therefor NO modem to speak of)...

Your "modem" isn't being blocked by the big evil SE. Its a specific set of servers at SE (61.195.59.X) that have blocked incoming traffic from most of KT Megapass and LG Powercomm networks. I've basically proven this by only proxing connections to the 61.195.59.0/24 network to appear like their from a different IP address (not KT / LG). The rest of the SE servers (existing on 202/217/219/220 networks) Connect just find with everything on KT / LG.

Basically SE is lying out their A$$ when they said they didn't firewall anyone. I've made it a point to blow up their phones as often as possible, but since I work a 8-5 job, its been proving difficult to call them during their hours. EVERYONE who's out here in South Korea who plays FFXI needs to call SE at least once every other day. Use the POL livechat BS if you have to (watch a movie or something while you wait). Once enough calls get logged in then maybe someone at SE management might actually check into what the security people over at their main office are doing.

I read earlier in the thread that there might be a problem with the KT and LG servers because of the one-month no communication with new clients/businesses thing--maybe that is the case? I'm going to wait until Sept 30, but I'll keep trying to call/webchat every day.

If they are really blocking us, maybe we can send a story into kotaku or have alla's team try to do something about it? I'm seriously thinking about submitting a story to kotaku and other gaming news sites.

I just got off the phone with SE and the rep said they put out a message that they did restrict some areas. They said, if you fell in that category, sucks to be you.

What kind of customer service is this really?

I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the FFXI problem or not, but I can no longer download torrents through UTorrent. The port is being blocked.

I know for a fact that it has something to do with being in Korea because while I was in the U.S. for the past three weeks I was able to log on to FFXI and download torrents perfectly fine.

Perhaps it truly does have something to do with the ISPs and not SE, or vice-versa. We seem to be getting a lot of information, be it truly beneficial or contradictory, from everyone. We need to see who exactly has no problems in Korea, find out what provider they are using, and then hash out the differences.

I for one know I am not ready to give up a part of my life that I have grown accustomed to for the past four years just because someone flipped a switch somewhere and didn't tell me. If I have to change ISPs, then so be it.

Unfortunately, I am not as computer savvy as many of you are here. The most help I can be is calling SE and getting the same story over and over again. Getting into all those numbers/ports/ISPs/pings/proxies/blah/blah/blah makes my head hurt. I'm a simple first grade teacher, not a computer technician.

Who knows, maybe it will blow over on the 30th as someone had already mentioned.

I sure hope so. I'm not tech savvy either but thought I knew enough to at least hold a conversation with the guy. I did, but I confused everything with everything, from what type of internet connection I had to the routher/modem and ip address and ports. Slightly embarrassing but I'm confident there were much more people who called that didn't even know what I know, so I didn't feel too bad.

(well that's what I tell myself to feel better >.>)

Well to answer your question,

Location: Osan/Songtan
ISP: LG Dacom
Connection type: DSL
contradictions: I know soldiers who live on post who can log on, but all just restarted or opened their account. So I'm not sure if that had anything to do with anything or not. I tried "sharing" their wireless, I still couldn't log on.
#145 Sep 20 2008 at 5:40 PM Rating: Decent
I can still download torrents through UTorrent. If you are using a router, make sure that port is open, and it could also be your ISP. I remember in the States, I couldn't download any torrents because of the ISP.

By the way, it is SE's fault, they aren't exactly helping us try to fix the problem. They wouldn't run any tests or try to help us fix the problem we are having--the only thing they are trying to do is to cancel our accounts. SE is saying, "Hey f off mates, we don't need your business!"
#146 Sep 20 2008 at 5:47 PM Rating: Decent
I guess I'll bite.

Location: Yongsan/Seoul/Awesomeland
ISP: KT Megapass
Connection type: Fiber-optic?
Contradictions: Xpeed is part of LG Telecom. I'm not sure how Xpeed people are logging on. Everyone I know around me has this problem, so... sup SE?

Posting a story to gaming sites:

Upside: If this problem persists over September 30, I'm going to release my story to kotaku and other gaming news sites. It's so explosive, it'll probably make CNN cry at the drama it will cause.

Downside: What if North Korea nukes Japan because of my story? Oh well, it's SE's fault!

Ok I'll post
Location: Daegu
ISP: KT Megapass
Connection type: Fiber-optic to the apartment
Contradictions: Lots, mostly Hannaro (smaller ISP that bought up lots of little ones out here) it works find on. I traced the connection all the way to SE, I can ever pinpoint the Router/FW that won't let the packets pass to SE. The fact that the nutty Proxy system lets me play is reason enough to believe its SE's fault. What they basically did was block the IP ranges of the main ISPs in Korea. Mostly KT and LG, but some of the smaller companies didn't get messed with. Most of the PCbongs use KT/LG as their provider, and just guess where all these hack attempts are coming from?

Anyhow, I like the idea of getting the community relations crew involved, this is some whacky crap when you basically cut off your customers and give them the bird. NO COMPANY does that, its BAD business (as it'll create bad press).

So ummm, anyone talked to Piko / Thalos?

Waiting until the 30th until I bring out my guns, if we don't know if it's the ban on KT/LG, we'll look like fools. Wait after the 30th, it's just a couple days away.

I know, but it seems so far away.. I hate the fact that I'm all behind in the new goodies. I'm losing so many precious Dynamis points.....

I got Xpeed set up this morning and it connects me just fine. For now. Knowing SE, they'll probably block this too!

Or they'll unblock the old connection just because I spent several hundred thousand won on this. At least I got a cool new wireless phone out of the deal.
