Might be best to contact SE support (contact them first, since it may take a while to get a service rep), then conference in a tech support from your ISP. SE might believe that the ISP isn't blocking the game if they personally tell SE that they haven't blocked any ports. Or it may just end up with SE denying it. Either way, it couldn't hurt to try it.

I agree. The more people who contact SE, the better chances that we have to get this fixed. I have already talked to SE this past Friday and sent two e-mails through PlayOnline's website. Hopefully SE will listen. I also plan on calling once more on Tuesday once the offices open.

As it stands, it pretty much seems as though the inability to connect to POL is due to something SE has done. If they have in fact blocked South Korea from connecting, this could turn out to be permanent unless we really, and I mean really, push SE to get this fixed.

...and on a side note... Even though I'm completely going crazy not being able to log in, it's kind of nice to have an entire FFXI-free weekend. >.>

But SE hasn't blocked South Korea. I'm on FFXI at the moment using a borrowed wireless connection. I also talked to someone else from SK on Ramuh who is using Xpeed. It's just KT and LG customers who are blocked for some reason.

Both KT and SE have already stated (to more than one customer) that they did not block any ports or IP addresses. In the same breath, they are both blaming the problem on the other party. Obviously though, one of the two is at fault.

I don't think we're going to get a straight answer from anyone then. Each party is going to continue to deny that they have done something to cause the block.

Not to be pessimistic, but SE and South Korea in general both have a reputation for denying fault on their part. It's going to be a pretty vicious circle here...

Typical saving face stuff! SE has improved somewhat in recent years with all their changes to the game. South Korea is still, well, learning. Hopefully one of them will admit to something soon! Trying to cancel KT and switching to Xpeed sounds like quite the trial.

Personally, I think KT is the best ISP in South Korea, so I wouldn't recommend switching. I remember that Comcast had a problem as well, but can't quite remember what they did to fix that. Of course, Comcast affected more customers than KT did, so they tried their best to fix it.

Besides, it's actually the Yongsan military installation that deals with blocking ports and IPs, so I really doubt that it's the ISP's fault, or at least, that's what they tell me.

PS: Another reason why LG and KT customers are affected is because they are the two largest ISPs in Korea, which might have been why it seems like Korea is banned. There is a third called Hana, but I'm not really sure what that is and I have never heard of Xspeed lol.

PSS: Guess it's a waiting game until Tuesday. Someone on BG told the two people to wait it out.

Well I'm over in Daegu S.Korea with KT and I can't get on. Gonna try to call the tech support tomorrow and see what happens. One thing though, KT's usually pretty good about fixing stuff like this, or at least telling you if somethings blocked or not (they actually do block certain N.Korean websites). While SE has -ALWAYS- seemed to deny any blame for anything they do. Also didn't SE announce that they would start to block certain "regions" of the world......

Certain access points, not regions.

A lot of hackings have came from that area of the world (China/Korea) so I believe they've started blocking IP ranges/ISPs used by the hackers, there were some innocent people caught in the cross fire sadly..:( (a lot of my Chinese friends can no longer play.) though I believe FFXI is only officially supported in NA/EU/JP..I'm not too sure...because if it is supported over there, you can likely contact them (or have ISP contact them) to have a ban lifted off the ranges you're in.

I'm gonna raise a big stink about it, there shouldn't be a reason to catch some of their customers in a ban. I mean I've been playing FFXI since NA release, and this ban just came into effect on the 28th. It sucks. I don't want to cancel my accounts through my credit card since it'll mean my accounts will be banned, but if this is a permanent thing, I'll just have to do it because I really don't want to downgrade my internet just for a silly internet game.

I figure if we raise a REALLY big stink, they'll just have to figure a way to deal with "hackers" and stuff by themselves. Demand to talk to supervisors, get your friends to raise a stink, do everything possible in your power if you really want to play the game. SE probably doesn't care about the players in the China/Korea region because there's no official "pack" for those regions.

Let's attack the SE reps tomorrow!

I'm already preparing to raise hell tomorrow....ohh...SE how sad it is to not realize the calls your gonna get from angry customers....how will you endure the pain that is to come. Hopefully though we can get some good info and it will get all fixed up by weeks end..>.>

lol.. I guess no update.. are you guys using calling cards or using Landline?. I definitely want to complain.. I need this problem done with by this weekend...
#67 Sep 02 2008 at 6:22 AM Rating: Default
Calling cards are very cheap and I rely on them better than Landline. I get a 20$ one on the US base, and it lasts me around 200~300 minutes (been a while since I bought a new one).

PS: Also to those people that want to switch ISPs, I heard in certain apartment buildings, one of the ISPs have an exclusive right to those people in the building. My apartment building was wired by KT, so people can only use KT in the building. It sucks, but that's what I heard from the grapevine, so it might be a little difficult to switch if you live in one of the apartment buildings.

I hope my officetel isn't wired like that. I have found three seperate wireless connections that connect to FFXI, so they can't be on KT. Hopefully they're in my building and not across the street or anything.

I'm going to do an SE tech support web chat at 1am, when they open. If that doesn't work, I'll try Skype. I've never quite mastered international phone calls and so my phone sits dusty in the corner.

#69 Sep 02 2008 at 8:29 AM Rating: Default
Most apartment buildings are wired like that, or so they say. Even so, the ISPs make it hell to switch over, but since you are a foreigner they might be nicer. Even if you did switch ISPs, what if SE blocks that ISP as well? You can only switch so many ISPs before POL blocks the entire Korean peninsula. Might as well get this out of the way now.

This issue needs to be wide spread I think, how many people's friends quit because SE blocked that particular region? Making a particular uproar will make results happen, and perhaps because we are all contacting SE at once, they will understand that "hey, maybe we shouldn't have blocked those South Korean ISPs, now we got 10+ angry people yelling in our ear," and the more people the better.

Of course, they can be jerks and do nothing, but it'll be nice to bring this particular problem into light and maybe they'll fix it for us. (It's always nice to hope for something.)

PS: Being put on hold on the webchat for 3+ hours is quite the experience.

SE did blcok several IP ranges from Korea back in 2005, back when Korea launched a massive DDoS against many high profile Japanese companies. Oddly enough this was based on WW2 warcrimes. CNEt and others documented this attack in articles going back to april 2005.

That was all resolved years ago and I hadn't heard of a more recent attack on SE from Korea. They should have no reason to block Korean internet providers or IP ranges anymore.
#72 Sep 02 2008 at 10:00 AM Rating: Default
I was still able to play in 2005, so I guess it was just specified ISPs that were blocked or something.

I know this is about South Korea, but me and a few people I know in California, US are now getting the POL 1160 as of this morning. I dont know if anyone else on the west coast is getting it but I am. :(
#74 Sep 02 2008 at 10:16 AM Rating: Default
Ew, maybe it's SE's servers, lol. I honestly don't know. Those people at the call/tech center takes hours to get to, I've been waiting 2+ hours and that doesn't count the 8 hours I waited on Friday (US) to contact the centers and see what's up. Ugh!

I just spoke to someone at technical support. Here's a snippet of our conversation.

Quote:
Meara: Everyone in this region on my ISP and another aren't able to get online.
SEI POL Joseph C: Oh.
SEI POL Joseph C: I'm afraid this is not an issue I can fix.
Meara: What can I do?
Meara: I can't play the game anymore.
SEI POL Joseph C: To be honest, I do not know.
Meara: My ISP told me that POL was being blocked on your side.
SEI POL Joseph C: I am only a gaming server you connect to.
Meara: And that SE had to unblock it.
SEI POL Joseph C: I have not heard of our servers blocking anyone.
Meara: Korea got blocked before in 2005 during some DOS attacks
SEI POL Joseph C: I see.
Meara: Something is wrong. My Internet is working. The ports aren't blocked. But me and about 20 other people cannot get online.
SEI POL Joseph C: Since access to FFXI from every region is not guaranteed, we are unable to provide a resolution to your issue.
SEI POL Joseph C: I'm afraid there is nothing I can do.
Meara: But it worked up until Friday with no issues.
Meara: I can't even log on to cancel my accounts!
SEI POL Joseph C: If you wish, I can cancel the account for you.

Basically, SE would rather have our accounts cancelled than try to fix the problem.

Figures. I'm not sure what to say, but I'm going to try to speak as well as see what they can do. Maybe I can request a ping trace and see where the block is?
