wow I never payed much attention to these until i read this post. Very very interesting.

I'm going to have to try trading a lucky egg, or four/three leaf buds...and other items considered to be lucky in game.

Well, Aralays, that is an interesting idea... I am glad at least someone has an idea. :P

I was actually notified in game that you posted that, as I hadn't been to the site for a while, so my attention was called to it. The first thing I thought of, like you posted, was to trade a crystal to the protocrystal. So, that was the first thing to try. My room mate went ahead while I watched. We both have purple, so he went to the cloister of storms. Admittedly, it was not the original crystal he had received from the quest. I no longer have mine either. Because it was not rare or ex, and just a plain old crystal, it seemed like it wouldn't matter. Some people received a few crystals at once, so it would not make sense for those to be seperate in some way.

He checked mhaura first, still no changes, then tried the trade, nothing. No new text either.

So... while you may still be on the right track in a way, nothing yet. Disappointing...

I would really like to solve this... quest... or whatever it is. I believe it leads somewhere, and it is just a matter of finding out the next step. We still have yet to figure out the true meaning of the quotes, or at very least the meaning of the perfect partner, or it's usefulness. There is a missing step.

I try to think of what it could possibly be... but it escapes me. Of course, this must be tied to elements, which the game revolves around. :P So it could be related to anything anywhere, or be so obscure that no one would ever accidentally stumble across it (like trading a crystal, 3 distilled water and a mushroom to an npc on firesday at 11:21 while facing north). Who knows.

Any new information or ideas would be welcome. I am always willing to devote some time to this to try new thoughts.

Wow, the great master of this mystery himself answering to my post. What a honor ^^

Well, I can't try it for myself with the original-crystal yet because as an Lv.34-BLM the Beaucedine rune is a bit to dangerous for me. But when I get there, i'll try it (but I don't think it will matter if it is the original crystal or another one *shrug*)

My protocrystal-theory has still the problem of missing 25% of the crystals, so 25% of all players couldn't solve their riddle until the next expansion comes out (and to make a riddle and wait a half year to present the possibility to solve it, doesn't sound like SE), so perhaps it is tied to another elemental strong place/entity/whatever.

Another theory: take a partner with the proper title AND the same element AND the same rune, load up with as many resistance-items as possible (both of you) and try to activate the runeat the elements day with elements weather. *shrug*

Or how about getting a party of eight, collecting each rune and each element and then trading eight crystals to Emila? Hmm ... no other good theories from me now ...

Hmmm...

Lufaise Meadows, perhaps? Hippogryphs are in Riverne, which is in Tavnazia, which has Lufaise... Also, I believe Tavnazian Archipelago is slightly northwest of Kolshushu. Anyway, that's just a possibility.

Nah, no connection between place/words of wisdom. The words are tied to the element/color of a person and the fair feathers/foul feet is the water-word of wisdom.

Except ... hmmm ... I think I have an idea ...
What when the words of wisdom are the end-point of the search? The first clue is where you get the crystal and the other clue is where you have to trade it toa luck rune or so.

So for example for me: go to Beaucedine, get an ice crystal and go to the place where 'even the best parties end'.

Xarcabard sounds like 'where the best parties end' and where the goal-point for people with ice crystals.
Tavnazia has hippogryphs, so the 'fair feathers and foul feet' would be in Lufaise, where people trade their water crys.

Not sure if it makes sense, but to test it someone with his/her crystal had to travel to each luck rune and try to trade it to the rune.

Well.... Hm...

There are some combinations that myself and my roomie have tried. We both figured out what we needed when this came about, and we changed to each others titles. He needed to go to lufaise, I needed to go to pashhow. So, we got our titles, everything else, and headed out.

From what we have seen, the partner has no bearing over the first part of whatever it is we are doing. We got nothing but a single crystal each. Both my room mate and I had purple as our color. My trade was actually done on lightningsday. Still, nothing. In addition, I had charged up with my element...

After that, we tried trading the crystals to the runes themselves, tried trading to Emila, etc. No combination seemed to have any effect. After all this time, the rune will still not do anything new for me (nor will other runes), and the fortune teller herself gives me the same speech about how I seem to have forgotten my fortune.

So... after all that, I think that there is something that should be considered a next step. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, it is obviously not a time changed event, or something would have happened by now. That means the next step is forced by the user, or users.

Since we figured out the direction, at least, and part of the elemental meaning... I would think the next step does have to do with the perfect partner, since it seemed to have no bearing thus far.

So... what can we do with a partner? Who knows... trade the crystal? Well, I don't think that makes much sense... plus we would still not know what to do with them. What is it we can do together? I just don't know.... I have been trying to figure it out.

I do wish, however, that I had tried crafting with my crystal on the luck rune when I got it. I doubt that's it, but it would have eliminated that possibility from my mind.

I also wonder if the duty of the luck rune is over. We passed that part... if there is an npc somewhere... or... an item... something we have to do. That's the part that drives me crazy, there are soooo many possibilities. The luck rune did what it was supposed to do, I would imagine, and now says there is nothing out of the ordinary. Despite my best efforts, I am unable to "reset" the thing... so I have no clue.

The quotes... are interesting. The fact that they are always tied to the same element should be a hint, that is why I wondered about the tie between the protocrystals and the quote. But you are right in that there are no light and dark ones. Maybe that is a clue in itself. Since there are no light and dark protocrystals, maybe we should move off that path, but search in the same vein?

It just seems strange that SE would put in this quest that ends there. I really doubt that is all there is to it... but the next step is something abstract, something you really have to think about...

Still searching.

I wonder if all of this is connected to Pherchabalet in Port Windy?

"Here you can learn the fate and fortune of an adventuring duo."

"Form a party with the person you wish to check your fortune with, and then speak to me for a reading of your fate."

I have been unable to find him on any website and have yet to party with someone to find out what he says...

Ok, here's a crazy idea, but maybe the idea about this quest being tied to the Strange Apparatuses was discounted too quickly.

About a month ago, the password was cracked and was found to be a formula involving the first three letters of your name and the element of the Strange Apparatus.

http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=10&mid=112537484627344598

However, even after obtaining Doctor statue, no one seems to have figured out what it is good for. So now we have two seemingly incredibly difficult quests that require a LOT of work/thinking/ingenuity for minimum or no gains.

Other things that I believe support this hypothesis are that people have been able to get crystals from their luck rune with wrong day, wrong elemental resistance, solo, with partner, partner with wrong title, etc. etc.

I haven't tried either of these yet personally, but this is what I would attempt if I could:

1. Get a partner and get your fortunes from Mhaura.
2. Each of you go to your appropriate Luck Runes and get crystal(2).
3. Change titles to what your partner's "compatible with" message says.
4. Go to the Strange Apparatus corresponding to your lucky color and gain Doctor status with the appropriate password.
5. Trade the chip corresponding to your lucky color. (If this doesn't work, as a dangerous experiment go to the SA of your lucky color and trade the chip of your partner's lucky color or vice versa)

Anyway, just looked like the quest for figuring this out has died off recently, so maybe my idea will cause something to trigger in someone else's mind so that we can figure one or both of these quests out!

Has anyone expiremented with color drops? You get a random drop for no apparent reason from one of the final CS of PM8-4 (my color is green, but I got a white drop). Or they could have absolutely nothing to do with each other at all.

Just curious, has anyone tried this with multiple perfect partners?

or

A group of people who are suited to eachother in a chain(A is B's perfect and C is A's perfect and B is C's perfect)?

or some other variant with greater than 2 people?

I haven't read the entire post, so I'm not sure if this has been mentioned or not (8 pages o.O), but I'm almost certain that your lucky color has nothing to do with the day of the week and everything to do with the weather. I mean, think about it: One post mentioned that their lucky color was purple, and their direction was west. West is in Pashhow marshlands apparently, and Thunderstorms are quite common in Pashhow. Also, someone mentioned Pale Blue, and whatever Xarcabard's direction was, and they checked it on Firesday with an ice storm, and got an ice crystal. Coincidence? I think not.

Ok so i just came across this today, before the maintaince. I have not visited the fortune teller in Muhara yet. But when I examined it, I was told "Today your lucky color will bring you much Fortune"
(sorry about the spelling)
So as like u all I was very curious about this, and came here to find out more info seems though we are all very stumped, but since i have not read all the posts, there might be more info. I will read more.

here's what I got from one random FF site

Designation tolerance fortune-telling
When it speaks to Emila which is in マウラ G-9, forecasting with 1 time, 200G you can receive. Because ラッã‚カラー and direction etc. are said, increasing the tolerance of the attribute, when you inspect Luck Rune which, is in area of the direction which was said the crystal and the like enters into the hand.

Attribute and the place name which correspond is to the respective lucky color as mentioned below.

Red Color of the sea Green Yellow Purple Blue White Black
Fire Ice Wind Earth Thunder Water Light Darkness

Direction Place Coordinate Place remark
South ユタンガ large forest H-6 In hole
West パシƒ…ハウ swamp L-7 ---
North west バタリア hill F-7 Inside ancient tomb
North ã‚¿ãƒãƒ³ã‚® large gorge H-10 ---
North north west ボスディン glacier H-7 ---
Nisikita west ルフェーゼ field J-9 ---
North west クフィム island D-5 ---
North west Basket covered J-8 ---

It unites PT with 2 people, speaks to Emila and inquires about the designation of the best partner.
Respectively, when it modifies in designation of the best partner, it speaks to NPC which is in each country, 2 you can receive the cooking item.

Sand rear port G-7 Perdiouvilet
バストゥーク port J-7 Brita
ウィンダス Ku Kita E-10 of water Dabido-Sorobido

"Luck Rune is inspected", "you speak to NPC of each country" when, these two are cleared, (order relationship is not) for the second time can receive fortune-telling.
At ヴァナ ディール time at a time 1 day 1 time possibility.

As for the cooking item which you can receive as mentioned below (those which can be received with combination of sex and the race change?) .

The same surname, another race
Optical soup, coca tris boiling togetherandthe Soviet fickian diffusion stew, marble stake.

The same surname, similar family

Opposite sex, another race
サブゼãƒã‚¸ã‚§ãƒ©ãƒ¼ãƒˆandthe vermilion jelly, the loran very the pie +1.

Opposite sex, similar family
General rice ball, salad of forest of music

http://www5.plala.or.jp/SQR/ff11/quest-sub.html is the site.

So. Reward looks like food. :(

Ok... so on my second trip to the rune in tahrongi it was ice day, my friend had my title for perfect partner I went up to it and it said I got an ice crystal... my fortune was:
Pale Blue.
North.
Two's Company.
Even the best party comes to an end.

Ever since then I've gotten nothing has anyone got further into this then me? (I haven't time to read all posts) but I cant see it all being added just for the sake of a single ice crystal...

You can get the crystal solo. No need for a partner. We know that part already.

Here is part 2: Team up with a partner. Go to the city with the title changer for that quest and talk to one of the NPC's below. You should receive a reward ^_^

Race: Elvaan
Zone: San d'Oria Port
Location: G-7
Notes for Perdiouvilet: Located in the Rusty Anchor Pub

Race: Hume
Zone: Bastok Port
Location: J-7
Notes for Brita: Located in front of a covered stall

Not sure who it is in Windy.

After you done both of these, in any order, you can get another Fortune.

Have Fun.

I prefer the 'salad of forest of music'.

I agree, this is a bit of a bummer. A crystal and some food are not what i call a grand price. Maybe this will give a decent amount of Fame, it is repeatable.

On the contrary, a Rolanberry Pie +1, a Vermillion Jelly, or a Tavazian (maybe the HQ Leriemieu Salad?) would be a VERY nice reward, particularly the Vermillion Jelly. These three items are some of the best foods in the game, particularly if they're the HQ versions. All 3 require 80+ Cooking skill even to make the normal quality.

If you have any doubts that this is a good reward for the quest, check out the prices for Vermillion Jelly on the AH. Sell yours and you have more than a fair return for your efforts.

And now... I'm off to try it out myself! Vermillion Jelly? {Yes, please.}

Wow rate up for you for getting the second part. So what happens when you get another fortune? Is it a different Rune it directs you to? I wonder what happens if you get all of them completed, if anything.

Dont play anymore, retired soon after the Fellowship NPC Quest came out, so I can't check this out myself. Can NPC get a title? If so, has anyone tried getting their NPC the title requested/suggested, and going to the designated area's luck rune???

I translated the original Japanese page (had to re-locate it, since the link kawarsk provided was out-of-date). Re-worded it a bit to clarify a few things, and here ya go.
Quote:
If you talk to Emila at G-9 in Mhaura, you can pay 200 gil to receive a fortune.

You're given a lucky color, a direction, and a title (the proverb doesn't seem to matter). If you raise your resistance to the color's element and examine the Luck Rune found in your given direction, you will receive a number of crystals. You MUST have at least +1 resistance to that element to receive crystals, and presumably must receive a crystal to 'clear' this section of the quest.

The element and place associated with each lucky color is detailed below.

red -- fire
pale blue -- ice
green -- wind
yellow -- earth
purple -- thunder
blue -- water
white -- light
black -- dark

south -- Yuhtunga Jungle -- H-6 (inside the hole)
west -- Pashow Marshlands -- L-7
northwest -- Batallia Downs -- F-7 (inside a burial mound)
north -- Tahrongi Canyon -- H-10
north-northwest -- Beaucedine Glacier -- H-7
west-northwest -- Lufaise Meadows -- J-9
northwest -- Qufim Island -- D-5
northwest -- Xarcabard -- J-8

(Yoten's note -- I would imagine that for northwest, which has three locations, the second line that "describes" your color would be used to tell which one to go to. Not sure if that's the case, though.)

For the next part, form a party of two people and have each person get their fortune from Emila (if they haven't already). Since the title you receive is the one of the person you're most compatible with, have your partner change his title to that one. Once both people have their partner's compatible title, talk to one of the NPCs in the various nations to receive two food items.

Port San d'Oria -- G-7 -- Perdiouvilet
Port Bastok -- J-7 -- Brita
Windurst Waters (north) -- E-10 -- Dabido-Sorobido

Checking the Luck Rune and talking to the NPCs... do these two things (the order doesn't matter) and you can receive another fortune. You can do this once per Vana'Diel day.

The food you can receive is listed below. The rewards have four levels, depending on your compatibility with your partner.

I. "Best Partner"
Sub-zero Gelato, Vermillion Jelly, Rolanberry Pie +1

II. ???
Optical Soup, Boiled Cockatrice, Shallops Tropicale, Sophic Stew, Marbled Steak

III. ???

IV. ???
Shogun Rice Ball, Timbre Timbers Salad

I did it with an LS-mate (He's a Galka, I'm a Tarutaru female,) and I got two Sophic Stews while he got two Optical Soups... not bad at all. I'll try doing the quest again some other time. One thing I'm not sure of, though, is the rank system for rewards. Kawarsk's post mentions the ranks being decided by stuff like "same surname, different race", etc., but the original webpage doesn't mention that at all. They have "???"s instead of anything, which leads me to believe they don't know what determines it yet. Does anyone have any information on this?

Raise your resistance to that color's element? As in like cast a bar spell? I did that and checked my luck rune, still says "You sense that your lucky color may bring you fortune." lol wtf? I didn't have a partner with me, but it says u can do that part solo anyway >.>

Fortune was:
Pale blue (ice)
Great distance to the northwest (xarcabard)
Compatibility with "Hot Dog"
"Even the best party comes to an end."
