That's pretty amazing! I don't even remember most of that. That being said, I commend you, for all your reasearch.

Thanks for the information you were able to provide. I've saved FFXI screenshots from various websites and forums over the years (I have the mentality of an archivist and I'm aware of the ultimately temporal nature of FFXI compared to other games like FF1, SMB, Metroid, etc). There were a few pictures of Serket from 2002 and early 2003. From what I could "read" in the pictures (the websites were in Japanese, I was only able to see the numbers indicating levels and place names), what you said was right, Serket was the Kirin, Dynamis Lord, Vrtra, etc of the original pre-expansion game. Serket was a HNM taken on around the level range one takes on Shadow Lord. Some of the pics I've seen had a field of bodies scattered all around Serket's chamber.

I think one thing that hasn't been said is that Bar- spells (in addition to taking longer to cast, and costing more MP as already noted) did not scale with the Enhancing Magic skill level of the caster. When the avatar fights were introduced, and the level cap was low, and the Bar- spells were crappier, they were Hell to beat.

I remember reading and seeing screenshots from the original Avatar battles, in Spring-Summer 2003. They were much harder. I didn't know about the Bar- spells. I thought they were just harder because the level cap was lower.

i remember when i first started playing one of the first people i met (the guy who let me into my first LS actually) talked me out of levelling RDM past 13 and got me to do WAR b/c it was a "more useful job" than RDM. i also remember coming back into the game after a year long break (back in Sept 2004) and thinking "what in the world? what happened?"

Wow... what a change. I remember a lot of that stuff too...

But some others, as well.

I didn't see mention of the outpost teleport system. Also, conquest updates used to be displayed differently. Trading gear used to be a bigger difference in region control. The auction house was not sortable into categories.... that was a pain.

Some misc job abilities... like subtle blow...

Of course, the change for chocobos to be ridable at level 15 from starting areas.

The "TP nerf" as people called it...

And a handful of others I recall that don't matter much. What a different game it was.

Sorry if any had been mentioned, I didn't have the patience, honestly, to read all the posts.

Ha, I was going to ask how mithra sat too :p

Seriously though, this is my favourite thread I've seen on allakhazam. Really puts the game in perspective as to how good we've had it recently. Must've been hellish back in the early days... no absorbs or stun for DRK! :O

Haha, I remember some of these too ;)
Like the Tp nerf... and the addition of spirit link...
I remember when they first added dynamis ^^;
I was lvl 24 when they changed the mithra sit ; ;

Heres how they used to sit...

Ok I'm hoping I'm remembering this all correctly it's been a really really long time.

Yeah was waiting for someone to mention that one. My favorite update in FFXI of all time. Why? Because we had to earn it in one of the funnest server events ever.

For those of you who weren't around for it. There was a time when 8 Giant Treants stormed Vanadiel. 1 in all the newbie zones and 2 in 2 other zones somewhere else I don't remember. lol

There were moogles in these zones and they were like "hey someone should do something about these rampaging trees" something like that and you would be level capped at 20. You could only hit the tree or cure someone capped if you were capped. They were hard. You would run out whack it a few times, more than likely die, home, run back out, and do it again (luckily no xp loss when capped phew)

After working on it in a huge group for maybe an hour you might see the trees hp go down a sliver then the tree would "run away" despawn and respawn somewhere else (luckily with the hp still gone) The server had to banned together and fight these trees for days. AND THERE WERE 8 OF THEM. Man it was some fun times. Best Event EVER!!! And the reward for all that hard work is the outpost warps you all know and maybe some love. I sure love them :-)

Many updates still happen, I don't really know why they don't introduce more like this. It really felt good hearing that your server killed all the trees, knowing you were apart of it. I can't remember which server could claim they finished first. My server was like the last to finish lol. We were slow.

A lot of the other changes I remember too. Oh the hate threads when they changed avatar quests will not be missed. :-P

- Jeuno originally only had 2 Auction Houses, one in Ru'Lude and one in Lower.

what, Jeuno has more than two auction houses now?

Yeah, I must agree those trees were hella a pain to kill back in the day. I was a lvl 25-ish blm at the time. I think I died about 12 times in 1 day thinking I could just nuke it, I also didn't have a linkshell at the time to harrass to help out.

Surprised no one mention that meditate was on a one minute timer and gave 100% TP when subbed. Heck, WAR/SAM used to use a GAx and spam Shield Break while a DRK/THF would do a SAnTA(half buffed, mind you) onto the tank while the tank still had hate, thusly resulting in the mob dieing FAST due to no misses, and the DRK did absurd amounts of damage...
For that matter, shield break got nerfed.

Very interesting. Thanks for compiling this info.

I remember just a few things. Most of these changes happened after I started (June 2004).

Refresh totally ruined the red mage job. red mage is supposed to be 1/3 war, 1/3 whm and 1/3 blm. nothing more, nothing less. it's not a refresher and it's not a master enfeebler.

The best part of Final Fantasy XI is its rich storyline. It separates this game from other MMORPGs. I chose to give my character a storyline that goes along with the game's storyline. I find that this is a more fun way to play the game. Playing the game just to fight in the endgame and collect elite equipment is very boring and is totally missing the main objective of the game, which is to guide your character through the storyline which is to save the world.

And please...spare a tear for the poor RDMs of those days. No Convert. No Dispel. No Raise. No A rating in enfeeble--no A rating at all! And most of all--no Refresh! How in the world did they ever get parties?

DRG did not exist for almost a year. What a terrible year to be a gamer. I alos like that Convert and Dispel didn't exist - making RDM strictly Refresh whores, but not that good at it.

Check again--they didn't have Refresh, either!

If there's 2 in upper, then there's six, 'cause there's two in Lower. The main Lower Auction house, and the one by the Choco stables. All four Choco stables have an auction house next to them.

Heh, kinda makes all the "OMG SE RUINED FXI FOR US" posts that crop up whenever the slightest change is made seem silly.

$20 says people whined like stuck pigs over those changes too, so it really don't matter.

Just throwing a quick one on here that I thought was kinda funny...

Originally after casting sneak, you could still hear yourself running. I'm not sure if you were able to hear others or not.

Edit: spelling
