The ultimate guide to obtaining Optical hat. Let's get started, first off the stats for this hat.

Accuracy +10 Ranged Accuracy +10 Evasion +10
Level 70 [Head] All Races Rare/Ex

This fugly looking hat is sought after by all meele jobs. Obtaining this hat is by far an easy task. First off, you will need to hunt down 5 different Hakutaku eyes, which are located throughout the world. The eyes are not 100% drops and eyes range from level 50 to 75. These eyes cannot be purchased from AH, but can be purchased via bazaars ranging in price from 9K to 200K depending on the eye. Once all the eyes have been obtained you will need to fight a high level alchemist to craft them into a Hakutaku Eye Cluster. This cluster sells for 800K-1.5 mil sometimes in bazaars. With this cluster, you will now be able to spawn Hakutaku in Den of Rancor. Once you kill this NM, optical hat will be yours. The hat is a 100% drop. K, here are the details for the eyes.

The mobs that drop the eyes are black mage type mobs. They will cast spikes, -ga spells and ancient spells. There level range is 50-75 and are can be taken down with a decent PT setup. The drop rate for the eyes isn't too bad, an average of 1 eye per hr.

Golden Hakutaku Eye - This is located in Sea Serpent Grotto behind the Ornament Door. To get to the door, hug the left wall once you get into SSG. To get behind this door, you will need a Sahagin Key. This key can only be obtained via a seperate quest in Norg. For details on the quest, http://www.koolaid-ffxi.org/linkshell/space/The+Sahagin+Key The key can only be used once, so you will need to get a key each time. the Golden Hakutaku Eye is dropped off Mindgazer. It's a level 65-70 mob and is surrounded by Sahagin's which link very easily. If you don't feel like completing the quest, it is possible to pull 1 Mindgazer. If you continue to hug the left wall, past the ornament door. You will reach a fishing pond. If you look up, 1 mindgazer spawns on the cliff. You can pull it down and kill, the spawn cycle is 15min.

Earthern Hakutaku Eye - This eye is also located in SSG, except its behind the mythil coin door. To get to this door, again, hug the left wall once entering SSG and you will reach a fishing pond. Examine the door to the north and trade it a mythril coin and the door should open. Follow the path and you will see 6 blubber eye spawns. the level 50-55 blubbereye is the easiest of all the eyes to kill. You just need to clear the area of crabs and sahagin.

Burning Hakutaku Eye - This is located in King Rampere's Tomb. To get to this location you will need to examine a ??? and be taken underground. You will need to sneak yourself before heading down because bat's will agro. This is a pretty easy eye to get to and the camp is safe. All the Thousand Eyes are located in one spot, so just camp infront and pick them off slowly as they spawn.

Damp Hakutaku Eye - This eye is located in Ifrit's Cauldron and is surrounded by bombs, bats and scorpions. Dodomeki is level 63-67 and isnt too difficult to get to. Ifriti's Cauldron have bombs that agro to magic and they have a huge range. I suggest your party bring invis powders and silent oils.

Wooden Hakutaku eye - The most difficult and toughest eye to get. Dropped off Million Eyes in Den of Rancor, this mob spawns at the same location where you fight Hakutaku for your optical hat. Million Eyes are level 73-75 [decent challenge to a lvl 75] and is surrounded by tonberries. To get to Den of Rancor, you will need to head through Temple of Uggalepih. Enter the Temple and hug the right wall. This will zone you back to the jungle. Follow the corner and go back into the Temple. Head south where you will find a door which is protected by Temple Guardian. He's a level 75 Doll, which isnt too hard, just make sure you stun when it does Melt Down.

You will need to get a Paintbrush of Soul to open the hidden door to get to Den Of Rancor. I dont remember how to get the key item, so maybe someone can help me with that. ^^ This is also the same route to Zilart Mission 4. Once inside Den of Rancor head to H-8. There are lots of Million Eyes for you to play with.

Ok, you know how have all 5 eyes. What now? You will need to find an alchemist with level 86 MINIMUM to make the cluster. The recipe is:

Burning, Damp, Earthen, Golden, Wooden, Fiend Blood and a Light crystal. Be warned, a critical fail will cause you to loose all the eyes. Even with 100+3 alchemy there is still a 2-3% chance of failing. It it possible to HQ the cluster, but it's only animation and no special effects will be given to the NM or the hat.

Alright, you now have your cluster. Now bazaar it for 99 trillion gil and wait for an alliance to form. This part could take days, weeks or even months because Hakutaku IS NOT a cake walk. I don't recommonend you go with random people because problems will occur. It's best if you go with LS members. Hakutaku is a hecteye type mob and its very similiar to the mobs you have been killing eyes for. Except the NM itself has crazy evasion and defense. Head to Den of Rancor and head to H-8. You will see a ??? and you will trade your cluster and the NM will pop. K, now the actual battle.

Get everyone to gather in Jeuno and make sure all meele have sneak and invisible powders. I cannot stress this enough because it saves a lot of problems. I suggest you get a minimum of 2 Ninja tanks, 2-3 stunners, 2-3 mages and a few meele with /thf to keep hate on the ninja tanks. Pld cannot tank this thing, it will take too much damage from spells and AM and its a waste of MP for mages to heal. A stun order must be setup, a single -ga spell can take out tank and hit an alliance hard. Make sure you stun at the start because NM has been known to cast a -ga as soon as its spawned. Mages must be prepared to cast paralyna on tanks because he loves to spam it. Ninja tanks should be tanking it backwards, this prevents paralyze. Mnk's should not be meeling, they should be Chi-Blasting. Every other meele should be SATING onto 2 ninja tanks. Meele's should be attacking the mob from the side or behind, anyone facing the front of Haku will get paralyzed.

The NM area has 2-3 million eyes and 2 tonberries that spawn in the area. Have a separate tank and 2 meele to deal with addons. All meele should bring sushi. Or if your really lucky, bring a high level bst to move the addson for you. This fight can go wrong in a second. So stay calm and be prepared for anything. If something does go wrong, kite Hakutaku until alliance is ready to continue. Do not call for help on addons because that will cause NM to go call for help mode as well. If alliance dies, Hakutaku will despawn and the cluster will be lost. Once Hakutaku is dead, Optical Hat will be yours. It's a 100% drop. Thank God. Get the alliance to heal up because the ??? will respawn 15min after Hakutaku has been killed.

Well that's about it, enjoy the ***** hat and be the envy of all the noobs. If you get your cluster and cant seem to find an alliance, don't worry about it. You'll get your optical hat and when you do, you'll be screaming your head off. Good luck.

-V

PS - Bigup to Tipien and Akimarie for there success on there Optical Hats runs. :P

So I guess I can solo those blubbery eyes at lv 72 THF? Or at least with a mage or so?

re: Paintbrush of Souls

You have to fight Tonberries for a Tonberry Key and then access the room next to where Trompe l'oeil spawns. The paintbrush comes from there. Better details can be found by reading ZM4 related postings.

Once you have a paintbrush, please, please don't listen to the jackasses who say your entire alliance has to remain dead still and not touch their keyboards in order to use it. It's a bunch of crap. The guy with the paintbrush has to walk into the painting room, talk to the empty painting on the far wall, then talk to the empty painting on the wall that the door spawns in. This will make the paintbrush jump up and start painting.

While it's painting, you must remain still. You'll get a little prompt that says it's painting and it looks like it wants you to press Enter. If you do it will say that you weren't able to fill the canvas.

Get to that prompt and sit still for 30 seconds or more, then hit enter. That will trigger the secret door.

The paintbrush is a key item and infinitely reusable.

xDrdre,

When I went in and talked to the painting on the near-wall first, the Paintbrush of Souls twitched, but didn't start painting. I went around and talked to the other empty picture frame, then the ??? on the desk, then back to the original painting. Things worked at that point.

On a second run through the room I did not have to talk to everything; just talk to the correct empty frame and the painting sequence began.

You may be correct; I'm just extrapolating based on what I know I had to do. Your mileage may vary. Warranty is neither expressed nor implied. This post is made from 100% recycled wisdom. 0 calories and low in fat. ^^

To elaborate more on the actual strategy for fighting Haku:

It is advisable to have two tanks and a full alliance of 18 to fight Haku. Have the paladins equip earth staves and face away from Haku when fighting. Use SATA to maintain hate on the two tanks, while still dealing damage. It is extremely important to have at least 3, if not more, stunners for this fight. Set up a stun order and stick to it, because the mob casts Firaga III and Flare, among other things. An example of a good stun macro:

/ma "Stun" <t>
/p Stun --> <t>. (Next in line), you're next to stun! <call>

This mob has a incredible amount of hit points and will probably take 15 mins or so to kill. Since it takes 15 minutes after Haku is dead for another ??? to pop, you can imagine that this is very time consuming. A couple of weeks ago my LS did Optical Hat runs, and got 13 hats in a bit over 8.5 hours.

Very well done. I'm gonna have to disagree that paladins can't tank hakutaku though. When I got mine a few weeks ago we did around 10 runs, and every time it was two PLDs tanking, opposite each other, facing away from Haku to avoid Hex Eye, using Earth Staves.

No deaths, we had a cycle of three to four stuns each time, and two to three healers. Almost every melee came as /thf and spent time tricking on the PLDs... it was a little annoying for the melees when Haku would turn back and forth between the PLDs, but otherwise everything went smoothly. During my hat fight, one of the PLDs DC'd and we still finished the fight safely, though admittedly it took a lot longer =P

Basically it's just an endurance match, and I don't mean to say PLDs are better by any means, but you definitely don't -need- two or more ninjas for the fight. We didn't have any, to be honest. With the PLDs buffed by a bard, Hakutaku did about the same damage as an exp-mob would to the PLDs (or so they said, I really dunno how much that is).

Thanks for the update on the paintbrush Wingchild, I'll put that into the guide.

Reason I suggest 2 Ninja's because its the safest setup. Your right a paladin with an earth stave can tank it, but its a huge resource on MP. I'm a Monk/Ninja and I tanked Hakutaku with a paladin. The PLD would turn around and while I tanked it straight up. The Pld would voke when other meele had TP. I would get behind Hakutaku and I would get tricked. Once I got hate, I would turn the mob around.

Good guide, one question though... How long am I allowed to /cry over my cluster that broke 3 weeks ago? It was a 95 crafter and I have flashbacks and tend to /sniffle every now and then still.

Just a side note... I was told that any fail on this synth will be a Critical Fail, in other words, there is no chance of a non-critical falure if failure should happen.

As a note a fight with the mob takes about 45-1hour min minimum. When I went we had 2 alliances 1 took the NM 2nd took care of the links/spawns. add to that time for respawn of the ??? and it takes about 2 hours per Hat. On that day we got 10 done LOL and by 8-9th people started to get tired and lazy. but that was understandable. On side note if any one is interested in a wooden eye and a golden one on Alexander server let me know, i was gona get a hat for me on our 2nd run but it will be a long time before i have any melee job at 72 and its useless for me as BLM except for skillups maybe. Any way good luck to you all from what i hear of my friends its an awesome hat.

wow... just wow... I've never seen it take more than 15-20 min to kill Hakutaku, and the ??? is a 15 min respawn... where are you getting 2 hours from?

Also, 2 Alliances is way overkill... if you get an add, just pretend you're fighting Bomb Queen, and have everyone except the tank disengage and fight the add. I've fought Hakutaku with as few as 13 people, and it was still only like a 15 minute fight. Hakutaku really isn't all that hard, as long as everyone knows what to expect and how to counter it. Just to add a few things from my experiences:

-PLD can tank it, but NIN do the job much better.
-Stun is absolutely neccessary, Hakutaku likes to cast Firaga III and Flare; if your tank is a NIN, don't worry about Stunning Flare, but Firaga III needs to be stunned.
-Paralyna must be cast on the tank ASAP. In general, the best thing to do is have the tank the only person in front of Hakutaku, and everyone else crowds behind. It's not really necessary to have the tank look away, especially if it's a NIN, because that's a lot of hate you're missing out on gaining if you just stand there; just make sure that your healers know to cast Paralyna soon after you see "The Hakutaku readies Hex Eye."
-As mentioned above, when you get adds, have everyone except the tank Switch Target over to the add. This means that Hakutaku might die that much slower but w/e. At least you won't be dying because you can't handle the adds. It's also a good chance for melee to pick up a few "free" TP against a weaker mob. Hakutaku has notoriously high Evasion(unless you're LV75 with maxed merit points on your A+ weapon, and uber gear.) Note: do not call for help on adds. Doing so will also CFH on Hakutaku, causing the cluster to be lost. I have seen it happen, it is not something that ever should.
-BRD are extremely helpful for whichever job you have tank. For NIN, Double March/Mambo(some NIN prefer March, some prefer Mambo; or both if you have 2 brd.) For PLD, probably the 2 VIT Etudes would be best.

Most of all, just be ready to settle in for the long haul; it's not a fast fight. I've seen it die anywhere from 10-20 minutes, usually around 15 minutes. That means that there are going to be respawns, and there is a lot of time that someone can make an error in. Be prepared, and everything should go fine.

My only guess is that we ware verry light on blm's, there ware only 3 of us, and at that we all ware in 65-70's range i should have mentioned that. Im sure a nice alliance of 70+'s would probably kill it alot quicker and having more then 3 blm's would help too, as it ware we ware having hard time keeping the AOE stunned, we had to have the rdm's keep hasting us and still we ended up missing a stun once in a while, we only had 1 drk in party and he was last in stun cycle if we warent ready and none of the rdm's had drk lvled or ware at the lvl to be able to stun any way. but as i said it took about 2 hours a fight so ye the whole process took about 24 hours. but we basically hung out there switching around, at same time everyone who wanted the wooden eye got one. basically everyone got one hehe.

Having said that there ware only 3 of us it was kind of hard to nuke because only 2 of us could do it as 3rd would have to stand there and watch for a stun, then once whoever stunned they could nuke till recast, so unfortunately it took very long, we did have a crap load of tanks though LOL 4 pld's 3 NIN's. I didn't mean to make it sound like an inpossibly hard fight, it realy isn't, we ware just not optimaly setup for it. and as the time went we went from 2 alliances down to like 1 alliance and party handlink links and pops. really the links and pops ware more of the trouble then the NM as long as you keep him stunned.

    Sticky Please?

Also on a side note, I can solo 4/5 mobs for the eyes, but 2/4 are dangerous to solo as THF/NIN, bring a mage for healing and you can dual all 4 with no problems. Or if you are RDM/NIN or RDM/BLM you can solo all 5 even.

Drop rate is pretty good for me since I'm a THF, I got one drop on a second kill.

Having one BST doesn't always secure victory. (2 is better ;-)) Obviously because if they just keep the same million eyes pets, it stops them from respawning, plus it's also 2 pets + 2 bsts versus all the tonberries/millioneyes that pop, compared to one.

But yeah, the pic shows the perils of semi-random haku groups. Some ppl did know each other, but all the successful runs I've been on have been 100% LS. :)

The key points to this fight IMO, are 3 things:

    a) Stunning the -ga/flares (blms, drks)
    b) hate control (thf, /thf)
    c) paralyna (hell of a lot -_-; - to the extent of just making a macro for the tank in question)

A BST about 67 can solo any of these eyes except the Den of Rancor.

When I did my fight 2 died, the pld and a ranger but of all the fights I have done, those were the only one I saw with a death. We had to scrambe to get a PLD from the add party to get in and tank. We did have 4 BST's (inluding me) there. I was in the main party most of the time.

    a few important notes:

    1. this guide could be organized and layed out a bit better to make it easier to read and quick reference items

    2. Paintbrush of Souls is a side quest. obtain an Uggalepih Key (from tonberry cutters) and use this map:
    http://maps.all-manga.net/maps.php?act=show&id=uggalepih_temple
proceed to F7 on map 1 marked "paintbrush room". Trade the key to the door to enter, then check all the books. you should get a rusted key (key item), then click the old box to get the paintbrush.

to open the door to the den of rancor (I7 on map 2) you will find a "Stone Frame" along the eastern wall of this long room. click it and it will say you begin to concentrate. a little continuation arrow will come up, teasing you to hit enter. DONT. wait ~30s to a minute (give your mind a chance to paint) and then hit enter. if done right the secret door will open.

    3. expect a LONG fight. Haku is very very very evasive. even with all the ACC you can pile on, expect to hit at most 50% of the time. the fight will last ~10 minutes, and all melee should have /THF for SATA: both to keep hate on the tanks and to ensure a hit.

    4. mages must watch their hate, especially BLM. the nins MUST hold hate, if haku moves, it could ***** up an important SATA and things will decay rapidly from there, so temper yourself.

    5. RNG should read #4 above, only SW/SS after a SATA onto a tank. also RNG should NOT engage haku, rather stand on the ledge and plunk arrows into him.

    6. the less people next to haku the better, melee that /THF will need the space to move around haku.

    7. PLD be sure to flash if NIN is having hard time casting utsu. a PLD can tank this (well multiple PLD) but it will drain a load of MP. Haku hits very very hard: he will take out a 75NIN in ~3 hits, probably less.

    8. the ??? that spawns haku has a ~15 min recast so make sure people who go are in for the the long haul.

9 getting to haku, use these maps. i will assume you can find your way into the den (not terribly hard). once in the den:
    http://maps.all-manga.net/maps.php?act=show&id=rancor_den

you will enter on map 1 (upper left map) at the point marked (2). from here move to the tunnel mouth at G6/7 and head straight south. you will go through many little gaps in the walls as you continue south, and watch out for holes. once you enter the tunnel, you should only need sneak (bats and mousse) until you reach the point marked B. this takes you to map 3, just below map 1. at the bottom of this little hill you will find an intersection with million eyes (sneak) and tonberries (sight) at I8/9. now head north into the haku spawn area.

this is all very fast, but i hope these notes clarify some details
