Tonight's dinner menu: A Culinarian's Guide to Vana'diel.Follow

#1 Sep 06 2004 at 12:10 PM Rating: Excellent
I thought I'd throw together a "little" guide to all the wonderful foods Vana'diel has to offer. There are a lot more foods in this game than just mithkabobs and apple pies, and depending on your job there are BETTER foods than mithkabobs and apple pies! Or maybe you don't want to splurge on meat mithkabobs or you're running short on cash; there's probably a cheaper alternative listed. Maybe you're looking for the "best possible" food for a certain stat. Maybe you just want to try something different. Not everyone wears the same gear, so not everyone needs the same food boosts. If you're a taru melee, you might need more STR than an elvaan (who might, in turn, want more accuracy). Who knows. The point is, there are lots and lots of different foods, so enjoy them! ^_^

I've sorted the foods out in a very general sense, based upon what they seem to "focus" on boosting. Some entries are listed multiple times under different stats. Weigh carefully all the buffs a food gives. Just because food 'A' gives the most of one particular stat, that doesn't necessarily make it better than food 'B' that gives boosts to ALL your job's important stats. All the stats listed are from Allakhazam's item database, with a few key exceptions that I had to go exploring on the internet for. If a food has a High-Quality version, that item's stats will be listed on the following line. There are a VERY few food types that give different effects depending on what race you are. Also, I didn't include raw meat (for galkas) and raw fish (for mithras) since it would've been too much work and I didn't see the point. Oh, and HPR is short for HP Regeneration, just as MPR is short for MP Regeneration. One further note: If an item gives very minimal stat gains, it's probably not intended for consumption so much as it's intended to be an ingredient in another recipe down the road. Sausage (STR+2) is an example, it's an ingredient in later recipes so it doesn't do a whole lot on its own. Anyway, enjoy the feast. Imma go make a sandwich, I'm hungry now. ^_^

Pumpkin pie was missed under Magic Casters MP gain list, I believe.

Great list though. All new and many 'older' players should read this thread and take note!
#10 Sep 06 2004 at 12:47 PM Rating: Good
Yeah, I moved the pies out of that list. I may move them back, not sure yet. But since the REAL boost is the INT+ from pies, I figured I'd keep the foods that particularly focus on MP or MPR in that category. Otherwise, almost half the foods on the list would be in the MP/MPR category as well since so much gives MP+.

Even though there is a list on Mystery Tour, I still like the format or yours. I think it's quicker to find what I need to eat for my particular job.

Thanks for all the work.

Thank you for the compliments. I mostly did this because I'd like to see people branch out a bit from apple pies and meat mithkabobs. I consider them the "Distortions" of the food world. They're reliable, they're always a safe pick, but they're not always the best. Sometimes Detonation would be better, ya know? ^_^

Don't want to rain on your parade, but

Has the same thing, more comprehensive, and was THERE earlier. But nice guide regardless.

Edit: How the hell did I misspell there ;_;

Maybe I just should've named this thread "FOOD GUIDE!!!1" since people are asking food questions without even looking at this thread. -_-; Bump!

Hmm... I do have to say that I really like my meat mithkabobs though. (I'm a level 33 ranger.) Having oodles upon oodles of +agi is really nice, but right now, I'm not missing too horribly much (it'll be better once I unlock ninja and get to 35 for my drone earrings, mmm!) and the extra +strength/+attack from mithkabobs give my arrows a little extra oomph. And yes, I have looked into to other foods...once I hit higher levels, I may switch over to something with a bit more +agi, but right now, everything's pretty good.

So I guess I just wanted to say that I like your guide; it looks good and is very readable. Despite that though, I think I'm going to stick with my mithkabobs. Smiley: smile

Chocolate is far and away the best mage food. I use it exclusively now unless I am getting heavy resists.

When you use pies, the +X MP only helps when you rest to full. Ideally, this is at the end of a chain, or 1/4 or 1/5 the time. Usually you don't rest to full, so it's never used. The +INT is nice but I personally use a ton of INT gear already and it rarely helps.

Think of it as half a Dark Staff...

Way to go Saboruto!- Now all you need is an edit to tell us which beers go well with which foods.

I was so about to look into this kind of thing myself and see what I could find (and maybe even post on it). Since I have fairly high lvl cooking I really wanted to see what things I could make and what good they would do my static/LS/occasional random PT. I am a general believer in non-cookie cutter FF XI, and let's face it folks, apple pies and mithkabobs are as cookie cutter as it gets! I was really thirsty for info on alternatives. It is not that cookie cutter mobs, jobs and foods are ineffective (they work totally well!) it is that they are not the ONLY effective method. So get out there and break the mold people! (oh and be prepared to give people a doctoral thesis level defense of your stance should they kick you from their PT- 'cause nothing less will break the iron grip of the cookie cutter on most people).

As my personal little addition- don't forget that you can eat RAW foods too- sucking a Kazham pineapple straight as a BLM will cost under 100 gil from the vendor and net you -5 AGI/+3 INT. And if you are Galkan or Mithran don't forget you can toss back raw meats and fish respectively. Plus- if you look at the above site you can see the patterns easily. All fish are +DEX -MND, all meat is +STR -INT, all Fungi are +MND -STR. So yeah- a Mithran THF could even just bust out a fishing rod mid-PT and pop the first fish that comes up for a lil' DEX boost- why not? If you want to be a really hard-core Mithra though, you gotta eat a Cobalt Jellyfish raw; I couldn't stop laughing the first (and only) time I ever saw that one. As a Galka- you could fulfill those urges to devour your fallen foes with more than just emotes! I myself recommend partying it up psychadelic WHM style, you gotta try it to beleive it- Woozyshrooms man, Woozyshrooms. It is worth it for the comments you get from the PT alone)

PS- Since I couldn't rate the main post up- I just rated two of your random replies up. (I know you put 'em there for a reason!) 'Cause this thread is solid.

If anyone's interested in the food effects for raw fish/meat/ingredients, please let me know and I'll add it, though I'm fairly sure that the cooked foods are much more powerful on the whole. Anyway, salvage-bump.
