No Choice but to Rate up!!Follow

Every once in a while we all come across a topic that touches us in ways we can't help but to feel good about. Sometimes they come from sources we never expect and sometimes they come from sources that are always consistant. The one thing that is for certain is that there is no denying the power of the topic.

So, my question is... What are the requirements that FORCE you to rate up a topic? Even more so, what are the topics that seem to get your seal of approval regularly?

Ehhh something funny or resourceful is what gets my rate ups.

Yeah, what Karg said.

I don't think I have ever been "touched in a way I can't help but feel good about" by a post...at least I hope I haven't...

I rate up posts with new, useful information or old information shone in a new light. That and everything that is actually funny, not that merely tries to be. So..what Karg said...

^ Agree on the above.

Also, if I feel someone is being rated down unfairly throughout posts (ie. is victim to someone else's grudge...) but haven't done anything to merit it... I will rate them up (checking other posts first). Then again, I DO have a lot of time on my hands during the day right now. Smiley: grin

Karg,

I noticed the XBOX Live: Karg, in your signature. Will you be playing HALO 2 and do you have a clan already? I am warming up my XBOX and getting set to activate my XBOX live account again. I'll try to either have the name Adversary or Soulsaint as my handle. I hope to see you around on the HALO 2 channels.

I will rate up threads on the following criteria:

1) Informative
Whether negative or positive, if I feel I gleemed information that is useful to me, it will generally get a Rate Up.

2) Intelligent
If the information is discussed intelligently, then I will rate the thread up.

3) Rational
If it is an objective thread, it will generally get a rate up from me. If it is just a flame thread, I will either ignore it or rate it down.

==========================================================

I will rate up posts on the following criteria: [NOTE: a post has to work hard to -NOT- get rated -down- for me]

1) Informative
Posts that offer actual information will get a rate up. Simple one word answers will likely get no rating what-so-ever. A post that is filled with meaningless banter - which is often seen now-a-days - will get a rate down from me.

2) Intelligent
If a post offers some structured thought, it will likely get a rate up depending on the information provided and the thought behind it. If a post comes across as a lost wildebeest that found a stray computer and started smacking on the keyboard - rate down. If it is a flame even intelligent, you have to work hard to -NOT- get a rate down from me.

3) Rational
Flames usually will fail this portion of the test. Generally (to me at least), many of the flames on this board are completely illogical, irrational and are just plain annoying. They offer no information and benefit no one. If you want to flame someone and flame them good, take your time and really think about it. It is a much better flame if you use kerosene rather than Aquanet. However, it will have to be a very intelligent flame in order for a rate up.

Random posts that have sockpuppetry, cussing, harsh, etc. aspects to them will generally get a rate down or ignored. Making accusations of sockpuppetry will generally result in a rate down. I will give Rate Ups to threads that are specific to FFXI in a general manner, but again, the criteria will have to be met. Often times, I will not have time to determine ratings for a thread and will not give either Up or Down. This is not to say the thread is indifferent to me, just that I don't have time.

Forgive me crunchy, but were you the recent victim of a rate down? As far as I can tell you're not a scholar yet...

:( Yes. A few times now. I'm not entirely sure why... but I just realised after posting that 'I would rate them up' - I didn't have the ability. Hehehe.

Is that to mean you have to be a Scholar to actually have your rating count? Have I been rating posts for no reason the last couple of days?

Anything with wombats in it gets a rate up from me. Wombats = Teh Cool!

I find it amusing when people claim to rate people whilst their karam is way below 3. Is funny.

So are you saying you are rating down every post in this thread? Or just the OP?

Now, this particular thread is not concerned with trolling or karma gaining/losing in general as it is a question of what people find they can't help but Rate Up a given post/thread/topic. This is not a complaint/discussion about negative/positive karma in so much that it is a discussion on what compells us to rate a post -up-.

I believe you might have misunderstood the context of this thread, Deadeye.

My apoligies for not knowing the little pull-down menu under everyone's name actually did nothing when I selected from it. If we can not rate posts whilst under a 3 rating, perhaps the rate pull-down should not be available. It seems odd that the Rate Posts submit button -and- the pull-down menu are active and "clickable" if they actually do nothing unless you over a certain rank.

I didn't even think the "Select rating" combo box appeared unless one was a Scholar.

Yes. I get the Select rating pull-down. I have, ever since I registered this user.

the check for it to show or not show was bogging things down. this way, it just doesn't sick, but doesn't slow things down.

Alright then, I didn't remember the Karma level with regard to rating posts bit, so I have been wasting my time thus far.

As for you laughing at my claim - I take offense at that. I simply forgot that my rating other's posts was rendered null. I am glad you can find amusement in what was clearly a misunderstanding.

I rate up if someone shows us something new about the game. I'll also rate up a post I feel is unjustly camped. Oh, and I'll rate down a post written in "l33t". I'll rate down a post that is noobish. Meaning if they are saying something I know to not be true or completely unthoughtful. Like "Oh my god how can you have a party without a white mage STFU n00b!" Yeah, those get rated.

All in all, I hardly ever rate a post. If I ever do come around to using the pretty button I will comment on whatever it was that warranted my attention.

I rate up for the following:
1) Informative. If someone answers a question with a link to information or a cut and paste or typed out response, that deserves a rate up.

2) Civil/intelligent. If someone posts a civil and intellegent reply to a topic that is generally flamebait (OMG, BoTz R Teh SuxxOrZzZz!!1!!!, Gay marriage is from the devil, I'm 4 and play FFXI and people hate me) then I'll rate up.

I generally do NOT rate up the following:
1) Funny. Humor is great and all, but generally not helpful to the game. Unless I fall out of my chair laughing...

2) One sentance reply. For example: "Should I tank as a MNK?" Answer: "No." Uhhh...how is that helpful?

3) Off topic. Unless it is derailing a stupid thread into something useful.

The End.

Thankfully, as mentioned by an Admin - your ratings are null as you are not rated a Scholar yourself. But thanks for playing.
