-_-

Knowing full well I'll get my karma absolutely tanked for this, let's just make a concentrated effort to get all these damn idiotic posts below 1.50...after all, it's not karma camping when it's for the good of the forums. (^.^)

Meh, not even spam. Just the crap we get tired of seeing. JP v. NA, etc. I consider that spam...

Ive been doing this for months now, i havent been actively posting on FFXI boards but i have been rating up those that are deserved or funny etc.

But every time i see someone put up post on JP Vs Na, Botting, a pointless petition, ask a question that is easily answered by side toolbar, and on and on and on i lay the negative Karma.

before you tell everyone able to rate karma to rate down every post they dont like seeing, maybe you should tell then to read the FIRST post in the topic beforehand. sometimes, these are worthwhile posts that just get trolled for being on the forum.

maybe you should restate what you said. there are several topics about JP vs. NA; am i supposed to rate every thread down? every post in every thread? even if there is a good discussion going on?

just because we have the ability to rate down posts doesnt mean we need to go crazy with it. let's just use our positive karma rating to BETTER the forum (anyone remember stiltzy? /em prepares to get rated down for stating his name...). we do NOT want to make this is a place people avoid just because they get rated down for asking a question or posting a well-thought-out topic that the majority "just didnt want to see."

Grey, I can understand where you're coming from, but, in all honesty, when was the last time you saw a 'good discussion' in a thread titled 'OMG JP CHETZ N HAX!!'? The fact of the matter is, all of these threads are simply rehashing the same old tired points again. How many times have people argued if there's a 1 second delay, or no delay, or if they see mobs first, or if they dupe, or if japanese players are all secretly robots that are using the tarutaru dance to control our minds and turn us into sex slaves?

There is nothing new under the sun in that discussion. I seriously doubt if there will ever be anything new in that discussion. Why do we participate in them? And by 'we', I mean the people that seem to have half an ounce of common sense. Is it to make ourselves feel better about our high and mighty opinions? I don't really think so, but I think we've gotten to the same place that a lot of frustrated academics get to...after so long, there's not a lot you can add to your base of knowledge in a particular subject that will change your arguments in any substantial way.

Same thing with 'common questions'. I do feel for non-premium members, because not being able to search does hurt them and leads to redundant posts. Perhaps a stickied FAQ would be helpful to correct that, but that isn't really the point of this thread. I think Alla's request for more guides recently was intended to solve the problem of redundant questions, though, so it seems that the admins have been thinking at least a step in front of us.

It just gets frustrating seeing the same damn threads come up all the time, you know? I'm set to never filter, so I see everything...and I rarely see a thread on the index that's sub-default. I see individual posts that hit that, but at the same time, it's still a fairly rare occurance. When you get down to it, I think that a lot of us have been shirking our responsibilities (and privileges) insofar as being our brother's keepers in rating others down (not so much up...feels like woodstock sometimes around here).

Also, something I should have added to the initial post - If you do see a bad thread, don't post in it. The residual karma of a scholar into a default thread just makes it that much harder to get the thread below sub-default...And, before someone accuses me of being an elitist ******* (which, admittedly, it sounds like I am), if you're helping someone who has a genuine question, comment, or brings up a good point, go for it. But, please...something's got to be done about the proliferation of crap.

if you had seen my post waaaaaaaaaay back when over the issue of sexual harrassment and the use of the term "rape" in-game, youd see what i mean by this. no an "OMG WTF?!?!111!!! JPBOT S R OUT THERZ!!!!?!11" post, but a real discussion which deserves attention, i got rated down to 2.something in that thread on many of my posts simply because "people didnt want to see it." there are sometimes other posts like that here as well. what i AM saying is that, before judging a post, one should first read the primary post to get the gist of the topic and make sure what theyre rating down really IS one of the worthless "OMGWTF?!?!111?!?" posts.

Actually, I did see it. Read it, too. Thought it was good, and agreed with you on a lot of points, but I didn't feel like watching my karma bottom out that day.

But today...whoo. I wonder how long it'll take for me to lose scholar at this rate? This thread has almost lost a complete point.

*puts out more food for the karma trolls*

pomposity, dont you find it a teensy bit ironic that youre complaining about karma trolls in a post where you urge people to rate others down for posting:

Meh, maybe it's just my masochistic side coming out, grey. Well thought out posts either end up getting great ratings but sinking to page 5+ due to lack of posts or become endless flamewars, and dumb ones (like this) get camped on. I'm half tempted to echo Lady and tell people that if they've got a problem, post in the damn thread instead of hiding behind the rating system, but that'd be the pot calling the kettle black, wouldn't it?

/em shrugs.

Pomposity, if you don't like it, then don't read it. If you have a problem with a thread that has a jp vs. na title, then don't click on it. But to stop other people from talking about it is pretty selfish and borderline censorship.

You mentioned frustrated academics, well anyone in academics knows that at a certain point one might have to sift through a mountain of information that is already known to arrive at a single precious pearl of new information.

For example I remember reading a thread about NM camping and seeing a poster named redmagehiei mention that a person can sub BST for widescan and use charm like provoke on an NM. This was on one of those simple questions threads, but I learned something. Anybody that wants to look at the actual thread it's here:

http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=10&mid=1086930611583711469#108693819028514180

I'd really appreciate it if you would stop trying to control what information is available on the board just because you are tired of reading about it and don't want to do what the sensible thing and just ignore it.

My ethics:
I rate anyone up that gives a good piece of information or posts something to lighten the air(aka "funny"). I very rarely rate people down. I only rate people down in the instances where they are acting like a total ***.

On karma trolling:
I don't like it when someone rates people down for no reason. If someone is bored and feels like rating down, so be it. It sucks, but there is nothing we can do about it. It just seems to happen on boards with a rating system.

On the rating system:
The rating system was established to show who was a good poster and who was a bad poster, not for people to randomly rate people down and not for people to rate someone down who corrected them. I wish people would use the system in the manner it was intended, that way we all could see who's information is reliable.

Concluding thought:
Regardless of the karma trolls, most of the people with good information are scholars, so that is decent enough for me.

And I am use someone from Allakhazam will gladly give 10 hours a day to remove posts from this forums.

Better yet, get one of the people bitter over karma to moderate. That should be unbias. Heh.
