I have to pick just one thing that makes it great? there's so many things...If I had to pick one, it'd be the sheer variety of stuff you can do... that or the attention to detail.

I just watching most of the neat effects most of the time. Yah I know its not the eye candy, its should be about the gameplay and the comradary. To tell the truth though, I really dont even have that spectacular of a video card (I get video glitches all the time) and I still find myself going, "Wow, thats a pretty awesome looking ability". Everything from ninjitsu, black/white magic, weapon skills, heck, even sometimes what the mobs pulls out of their bag of tricks. I just cant seem to get enough and I know there is alot more to come.

I've downloaded most of the videos in Karg's Library thread, and I get giddy because its like a peek at what kinds of cool abilities the higher levelled jobs get a chance to use.

Really my real love for the game has to come from the party experiences and meeting people from all over. You can meet some interesting, some wierd, som ahole, and well.... the others.... well we just wont mention them hows that.

I love the questing, unfolding storylines - how they all interleve! I love the attention to detail, the thoughtful little touches, like the Monkeys giving new years gifts, the moogles, the christmas decorations. This shows effort in keeping the game going and interesting! (I am an ex EQ player so its nice to see some effort going in to a game all the time, rather than releasing unfinished expansions, broken quests, and naff all customer service!) I love the sheer beauty of the game, meeting new people - and exploring! Three of us went on a 'See how far we can get before we die' expedition at 30,starting at Rangemeut(sp?) Pass, I got most of the way through Xarcabad (we also had no maps whatsoever) before a Boriel Hound nuked me for 613! I died first :) Rali died 5 minutes later to a Boriel Tiger who flared him for 800, and Tomoe made it into the castle before biting the big one :) Was the most fun thing to do!!
I now play bard, and adore the class, love grouping..although the Dunes still gives me cold sweats - little less scary now I saved and saved for Mary's Horn and can sleep things easily in the event of trouble!
So many things to do..every day is an adventure!

The quests and missions. They're typical FF top quality.

What else?

The outfits, furnishings, gardening, getting a really good party together and joking around with friends of your linkshell.

The feeling of accomplishment when you're finally gotten enough gil to buy that certain piece of armour and put it on for all to see...

The sheer varity of things to do... Farming (which I enjoy), leveling, crafting, exploring, quests, missions, BCNMs, Ballista (yay! Mages are squishy!), and even helping some newbs get Skulls in Gusgen.

I haven't leveled in like 2 weeks because I have so much other stuff to do. :)

Well, I'm still relatively low level (being a casual player, I don't tend to level very quickly), but thusfar I'd have to say my favorite part of the game has occurred very recently. Things *working*!

17BLM/8RDM in the Dunes, got into a party with:

17WHM/8BLM
16BLM
15BLM
16SAM/8THF
16PAL/8WAR

Everyone polite, everyone receptive to criticism, and everyone concerned about the lack of a secondary 'voker. Set up the standing orders quickly. I enfeeble, the other 2 BLM nuke. PAL does his job. WHM does her job. SAM is the puller/renkei starter.

Got our renkei set up quickly, and pulled a few Snips to get a feel for whether we needed to rethink this mage-heavy party layout.

Aside from one of the BLM overnuking and pulling hate a lot more often than he should have (still, at 16 without a sub, you can't expect he'll be flawless ;P ), the party ran like clockwork. After an XP chain 4 on Snips, we moved up to Flies and Gobs.

SAM pulled, PAL 'voked, attacked, and cast to hold hate. WHM healed as necessary. The 2 BLM nuked (one a bit overboard, as I mentioned, but they did what they were asked). I enfeebled, threw a nuke, then watched for the renkei to start, so I could burst without pulling the hate off. With a SAM in the party, we'd renkei on *nearly* every other pull.

After watching me burst 4-5 times, one of the BLM levelled to 17, and had the Blizzard scroll on him, ready to learn. The very next pull, he burst with me. Wonderful!

It was a darned shame that party had to disband - we were having a hell of a time, and making rather massive XP on chains. I've had my share of horrible Dunes parties...this was refreshing and fun - additionally, everyone levelled at least once (one BLM twice!)

Alternatively, I've taken to trying to teach the less-favorable Dunes parties how to renkei. It's quite satisfying to get a party of previously ignorant WARs addicted to renkei/bursting ^^

For me, this game is like playing golf. At times, very frustrating ... most times, an enjoyable way to relax with friends ... on a few rare occasions, pure bliss.

I enjoy most aspects of the game, and I really appreciate that there's so much to do other than just kill stuff. But, the "bliss" comes when I'm in a good party and we hit that "sweet spot" ... good pulls, skillchains and bursts working, chaining xp, a healthy dose of humor, and (most importantly) everyone being supportive of each other and having a good time.

So far, my enjoyment of FFXI has mirrored my golf game ... not too much grief but not nearly enough bliss. But, I intend to change that by getting better (at both).

I love how they were able to implement somewhat of a story in this MMORPG, instead of having some guy randomly telling you to go kill something.

And the blacklist, so people will learn not to be a-holes.

I also love the support job system. Leads to many many combinations, and very cool.

    Aldo's hat.
    Okay, seriously, it's Tenshodo.
There are two places in the game where every race comes together and works together. One is Jeuno; the other is Norg. Here's a group of smugglers, pirates, spies, and thieves who operates in every city and all over the map. Here's also a group that's involved in every major mission (at least that I know of) post-rank4. The leader is featured, as a child and adult, in the opening movie for the game. Even with CoP, the new expansion, one of the two new NPCs mentioned is standing next to Aldo in Tenshodo, so it's reasonable to assume that they have a part in those missions as well.
What are these guys really about? Why is it that the combined authority of San d'Oria, Windurst, and Bastok can't stop them, and even Jeuno turns to them for help? And just what is up with that hat?

Non-blocky graphics.... I just love the smooth graphics and animations.. The fact that our armor and clotes sway when we run... and the ***** the plated armor makes..

Other parts of the game are growing on me like farming for one.. (Im a Thf).. Meeting new people and getting in that ocassional party where everyone works togeather and the exp comes flowing in nice and smooth.... Smiley: waycool

Just one? How bout the money I've saved not buying a new game every week looking for soemthing to entertain me. Or that when I play there's so much that I can do and I love it all. In fact the only thing I don't absolutely love about this game is how much time it takes me to decide what I want to do. Fish....farm....lvl....which job do I want to lvl do I want to go get another advanced job? I can't decide...I can't decide............brain annurism!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok, now that you mention it, she did call him aldo, didnt she?
    huh...

but whats this then? that was clearly an older sister.
we can only guess what fate befell her at the hands of the orcs.
perhaps she found another way to escape? perhaps she was brutalized and eaten by them.
either way, aldo of the tenshodo has a younger sister.
    where'd she come from?

    i like the cutscenes

nice graphics, jobs, characters, crafts, levelling zones, massive timesink to do stuff that makes you glad of reaching some goal..they're all part of other mmorpg that ive played

but the cutscenes for missions and quests makes you feel like it's a regular RPG andthe townsfolk are talking to you to make a difference

When you're down to 15 MP you have carby out and a DC goblin Spawns... Assault it and engage it with your mighty Ceremonial Dagger! Intently watching your MP bar trickle away as the goblin bounces aggro between you and your Atomic Squirrel! THAT'S FUN!
    Oh, and winning! =)
