Truth About NMs?Follow

#1 Apr 26 2004 at 6:58 PM Rating: Good
I am a serious NM hunter and have gotten almost a mil from them(a lot to me). Total of 2 leaping boots, 1 hairpin, 1 rabbit charm, and 5 night capes, just about a million gil right there. I am going to list things I have heard or experienced through my many hours of NM hunting and hope people say 'yay or 'nay' to them. Maybe one day when I am bored I will make a detailed guide about the NMs i really know about. One Thing i could ask for is a ratio for drops/times killed and tell weither or not u use TH. Maybe if i get enough i can make an average drop rate for NMs. And with all averages, the more i get the better the ratio will be to what it actually is.

NMs in general:

1.1 Treasure Hunter helps. (yes)

1.1 Treasure Hunter 2 helps. (yes)

1.3 New or Full moons effect drop rates. (yes)

1.4 NMs fall into 5 catogories, "replacement NMs" (a.k.a Placeholder), "Time based NMs", "Poppable NMs", "Event NMs" and the 5th catogory is going to be "miscellaneous."
Replacement NMs replace a mob after killing a similar mob a lot. For instance Damselfly > Valkurm Emperor.
Then there are Time based NMs which spawn for a certain amount of time but drops are usually extremely rare. For instance...ugh i forget the name but the NM that drops Archer Rings that spawns every 5 minutes.
Poppable NMs spawn when you trade an item to a ???. For instance trade a quus to the ??? behind the light house to make Bubbling Burnie spawn. Most of these NMs don't drop uber items, since you don't have to wait 2 hours to fight them.
Event NMs are spawned during a quest, mission 2-3 for example where u fight the dragon and the little flying guy.
Miscellaneous NMs is the 5th catogory and the reasons the NM spawns are unknown. Could be moon, day, weather, etc.. (yes)

1.5 Level effects drop rates. (yes)

1.6 Allakhazam Spawn areas are accurate. However, NMs can move from there spawn points and could possibly get pretty far away.(I didn't say this myself :D I think they are very accurate.) (yes)

1.7 You can have 2 rare items in your inventory. Such as Emperor Hairpin. (no)

1.8 You can have 2 rare items, 1 in your safe, 1 in your inventory. (no)

1.9 You can have 2 rare items, 1 in your AH, 1 in your inventory. (Debate)

1.10 Night/Day time, weather, moon, etc. effect drop rates/spawning. (Debate)

1.11 You can have multiple rare items in your delivery box. (yes)

Valkurm Emperor

2.1 Replacement NM (yes)

2.2 Spawn Areas are accurate (yes)

2.3 Takes on average 1 to 2 hours to spawn on average. (Debate)

2.4 I am 1/3, I have not fought it enough to get a good ratio on drop rate. Using TH (Debate)

Golden Bat

3.1 Replacement NM (yes)

3.2 Two spawn points (3 different bats can spawn into a Golden Bat.) One spawn area right before Gustav and another in the cave heading to the secret beach. (yes)

3.3 I am 5/7 on capes so the drop rate is pretty good with TH. (Debate)

4.4 Spawn time takes on average 25 min to 1 hour on average. (Don't forget it can spawn at another location. I was camping it for 2 hours and 30 minutes and no spawn. Must have spawned in the Secret beach cave.) (Debate)

Leaping Lizzy

5.1 Replacement NM (yes)

5.2 Spawn time is 1 hour to 2 hours on average. (Debate)

5.3 Spawn Areas are accurate. (yes)

5.4 I am 2/12 on Boots with TH so the drop rate is pretty ugly. (Debate)

Jagedy Earred Jack

6.1 Replacement NM (yes)

6.2 Spawn time is 1 hour to 2 hours on average. (Debate)

6.3 I am 1/1 (lol) I can't really tell with one try, might have been luck. I've heard cases of people being 0/25, 040, etc. So this drop rate is pretty ugly percentage. I used TH. (Debate)

6.4 Spawn Areas are correct. (yes)

Key:
(yes) = So far with the evidence it is going to stay unless you have proof it is wrong.
(no) = Proved wrong but if you have evidence for yes, it can be changed.
(Debate) = Still up for grabs, still not sure.

Edit: Wow turned out pretty long. Sorry about the casual typing i whipped this up pretty quick.

Edit: I like to edit a lot.

Edit: Added Yes, No, Debate. Changed 1.4, 1.6, 1.10, intro, and some typos. Added 1.11

If the Allakhazam maps aren't accurate, where can I find an accurate map? Incidentally, the map of the Yagudo who drops the Hunter's Longbow is definitely accurate, and I have found Leaping Lizzy in the area the map on this site suggested at least once. I have never once seen Jaggedy-Eared Jack in the map area though, nor have I seen other hunters there.

I have fought the Golden Bat 5 times all in the zone area near Gustav where the two bats spawn. I am almost 100% sure that it is a replacement (or ive heard it called Placeholder) NM. When i camp it I will usually go to the other cave leading up to the beach and kill the bat there but I have never seen Golden Bat spawn in place of that mob. I dont know if it won't spawn there or not, I havent spent enough time to make a completely accurate judgement. So far though with 5 spawns (I have seen it spawn 6, I didn't catch it one of the times) it has always been near Gustav zone in place of the two bats there.

by the way the bats have like a 5 min spawntime but its not specifically set.

I don't have all day so I'll give you my take on a few of these...

Quote:

1.1 Treasure Hunter helps.

1.2 Treasure Hunter 2 helps.

If the drop is RARE/EX (or just RARE) then I tend to believe that treasure hunter doesn't help. I have 0 evidence (no one ever does when it comes to this arguement) for this though. Other items it most certainly does help though.

Quote:

1.5 Level effects drop rates.

Yes it does. Release notes from one of the older patches state this explicitly.

Another class of NM is the poppable NM, ie. You trade an item to a ??? that spawns randomly throughout a zone like the Morion Worm. BTW: the mob that drops Archer's Rings (which Snipers are made from) is not an NM at all, the ring is just an extremely rare drop.

No.

Nope.

Definite maybe.

You cannot have two rare items, unless one is on the Auction House.

The other day, I didn't notice that the Enhancing Earring (I think it was?) is a Rare item. I tried to buy a second one for myself off the AH, and was frustrated a good 3-4 minutes before I noticed the little (Rare) notation.

You can have one rare item with you and one on the AH or in the delivery system. Items in your Mog House, however, count as part of your overall inventory. Therefore, you cannot have one rare item with you and a duplicate in your Mog House.

Prove this. At least, prove this for rare items. I'm sure it helps for the non-rare drops, but things like the Monster Signa? Show me proof onthis one.

I agree with most of the rest, but - from my personal experience - your information about rare items and about TH is inaccurate.

As it's been stated many times before, and this is what I believe, is that TH and TH2 increase the rate at which ANYTHING drops. Wether or not the drop is the rare item you are looking for is on a random roll the computer does. Don't know if I'm explaining this exactly right, but it sounds not broken enough of an ability that I could believe it works like this.

Someone had a good theory on how TH really works and it sort of made sense... It went something like this:

Players without TH will get 1 try at the "loot pool".
Players with TH will get 2 tries at the "loot pool".

So following that theory, it is said that TH helps increase your chances for getting any item. RARE/EX items are random, so you can pull them at any time from the "loot pool", but with TH, you get more chances to pull it. Of course, this is just a theory that sounds better than most.

dhluke

P.S. I was running to bastok from dem, and saw Leaping Lizzy, killed it and got drop... No TH, first try. Lucky!!

Well I don't know the exact formula, but you are far, far more likely to get more and better drops from mobs that /check as Even Match or higher. Too weak mobs are much less likely to drop, though drop rates can vary from mob to mob.

1. Level have no effect on item drops (besides crystals). If yes - farming would become useless

2. TH and TH2 have NO effect on rare-rare/ex drops. Try to hunt papyrus with 2 thieves in PT, like i did. Just the same crap drop rate.

3. TH2 much much better than TH when hunting for such rare drops like Archer's ring (non rare item, but rare drop) So TH is mostly useless here. Ask any 50+ thf - they will tell you same thing

4. Moon phase ( full moon and new moon ) and lightsday increases percentage of common items drop, but have no effect on rare/ex drops. Easy to check out. Darksday is worst day for farming

p.s. got some info from expirienced players.

treasure hunter does not help with rare/ex, HOWEVER treasure hunter II does, at least i feel it does, but then again nobody knows for sure so you can't say that it definately does or doesn't. :) and remember, thief has to take the final blow, or so it seems to help. just some stuff i've observed, believe it or not but the second i hit 45 we were getting rare/ex items dropping back to back in crawler's nest where as before hand we got zilch. out of 4 fights - 3 kindred seals, 2 chest keys, exoray mold on first fight.
shortly after i dinged to 45. before hand - about 20-30 fights, zero kindred seals, zero exoray molds, zero chest keys

TH ***DOES*** help, SE has confirmed it

Quote from a translated developer interview:

Quote:
Does having a thief increase the possibility if a drop even in key/quest items (aprons, skull, wadi grass, ect)?

Of course! Only the thief has the ability to acquire the Treasure Hunter job ability. There is an increased chance in obtaining dropped items.

You should prolly start a new thread with this link. So many people argue daily about this and you've got the proof right there.

An end to the Treasure Hunter argument? Wow... I never thought I'd see the day. Next thing you know Fishing botters and non-botters are going to see eye to eye! Ok, maybe that's a bit much to ask.

Also, certain NMs are event triggered like the Silk Caterpillar in Rollanberry Fields. Others appear to be element triggered (Lumbering Lambert and Battering Ram in La Theine).

There are so many in game variables (month, day, moon, weather, etc) that tracking down the the cause of a NM is difficult.

As someone who camps NMS for fun, profit, and down-right mischievousness, I'll toss in my two cents (and maybe a few quarters).
1) I'd have to say yes. Not only from SE's statements, but from my own experience. SE, however, wins over anyone else, so we must agree with them.
2) See #1, though I'm not quite there yet.
3) Seems to affect *some* drop rates, though, again, without SE statements there's no confirmation. Day of week, moon phase, and time of day seem to affect everything else, so it's reasonable to assume they affect the drop rates as well. I know I don't try to mine on ice day anymore :)
4) There's a third category, as stated - "triggered" NMs. Guardian Crawler, Silk Caterpiller, Bubbling Bernie - these are all event-triggered NMs. Usually, triggered NMs don't have the same kind of valuable drops since they're generally EX items.
5) I've seen no evidence for this, and plenty of evidence against it - drop rates for things like Leaping Boots seem unaffected by level.
6) Allakhazam's spawn areas are great approximations for the SPAWN location - as someone who scancamps mobs, I can testify to this. However, be aware that AFTER spawn, mobs move - sometimes very far. A mob like Lizzy can't get far before being killed, generally, but I've see Jack, the Emperor, and Mary wander all over their maps. As a practice, go to the dunes and wait for a dragonfly to spawn. mark you location on a map and then follow it for 5 minutes - you'll go all over.
7)-9) You can only have 1 of any rare item in your inventory - 1 hairpin, 1 boots, 1 of each item. You can have more than 1 rare item in your inventory - I've got the boots and the hairpin and other things. AH and delivery box are NOT part of your inventory; this is why when SE opens up the migration process, you have to make sure both are empty or you lose those items. Your mog safe and storage ARE part of your inventory.

Okay...but the Skull is just an EX item, not a rare item right? So can we confirm that TH helps for EX and not Rares (which is what I've heard), or am I wrong (wadi grass isn't rare, is it?)?

Well, the game is about to go down for maintenence so I'll throw up a little post on TH/rare/ex items. You can decide if this is true or if I'm just making this up.

Monsters don't have a "pool" of items they drop. Rather, they have a treasure table with odds of getting an item. For example, for a crab in valkurm it may look like
95% none, 5% crab apron
60% none, 40% rock salt
95% none, 5% land crab meat

the same type of crab in castle oztroja may look like
60% none, 40% rock salt
70% none, 30% land crab meat
70% none, 30% land crab meat

What does this mean? it means for each item in the treasure table a chance is rolled for that item. You either get 'none' or the item.

Now, what this has to do with treasure hunter:
Some NM _always_ drop an item. For example, Mee Deggi the Punisher seems to drop like this:
90% Impact Knuckles, 10% Ochiudo's Kote

Hoo Mjuu the torrent:
75% Deoderize, 20% Zealot Mitts, 5% Monster Signa

Ashmaker Gotblut:
90% Hermit Wand, 10% Priest Robe

(now, aside from the fact that I'm making the numbers up) I'm showing these examples for one good reason:
TH does not in any way help with these drops.

Why? TH rerolls a certain # of the 'none' drops. The game does not know or care whether an item is rare/ex but on NMs that always drop an item it doesn't help to get the 'better' item.

It certainly does help on monsters that don't have alternate drops (JEJ, Lizzy, etc) but often the drop rate is so small that it's not obvious. (After all, even a 20% increase on a 5% drop is only 6% total)

that's the scariest thing i've ever read... damn i'd cry if i lost my hairpins in the AH.

can someone confirm this? has anyone ever lost anything in the AH? or delivery box? and when?

I'm sure that con affects drop rate. I was farming/lvling in Merph on the sapling monsters. I was lvl 24 thf/war. The "easy prey" ones usually dropped a treant bulb or bag of seeds, sometimes both. The "Too weak" ones usually did not drop anything. This was over a period of 2 hours, was definately noticeable. I'd say that the probabilities were reversed... 80% or so for "Easy" and 20% for "Too weak". You might be able to convince me that TH doesn't work for "too weak" monsters, that could explain the big change.

Lets see.. I'm to lazy to read it all so I'll lsit what I've found out camping Most every NM you'd not be suiciding on that drops something sellable worth while.

King Behemoth... you have to kill Behemoths to make it spawn (which are 24+ hours spawn rates)

NM's do not spawn at fixed times
Like 2 hour ones might spawn 1hour 30min... 2hours 15min

Level dosen't effect drops (I mean I get 1 drop per 8 kills off a Lv 36 NM still about)

Full moon effecting drops... where the heck that come from?

Dunno about TH2 but you'll see basically everyone ???/WAR
blm and whm and rdm spell casting getting is jsut to slow (unless the others are asleep around you)

Some NM's spawn only at night.. or other conditions. Not all

NM's fall under several categories

Getting NM items to trade to a ??? to spawn a NM
Trading items to a ??? to spawn a NM
Time based NM
NM spawns by killing similar mobs
NM spawns by killing its "weaker version" NM
Quested NM spawn

-Note1 Know what the NM is, and counter for it, if its going to silence you or paralyze the crap out of you, link to everything near you, has a special move that does 600~800's... be prepaired because when you die someones taking over and taking the drop to maybe :P

-Note2 Sniper Rings are.... not a NM drop the Archer Rings used to MAKE sniper rings are those... jelly thigns at Ordellos Cave

Concerning the delivery boxes/AH:
http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/polnews/news1083.shtml

...
We ask that those players who
are to be transferred make sure they remove all
items from the Auction house(s) or their Delivery Box.
...
*Regarding items in the Delivery Box, or stored in
Auction Houses

Any items that are stored in Auction Houses or
the Delivery box will be destroyed at time of
transfer. We ask that you make sure to remove
such items and either store them on your
character, or inside your Mog safebox.
...

That's the only substantiation I have for the AH and delivery box not being inventory, other than trial and error.

You can have multiple rare items of the same type in your mailbox, just mail it to yourself. You will not be allowed to remove more than one at a time from your mailbow however. I know this to be a fact because I had 16 steam clocks "in limbo" this way ("returned" the first 8 to myself, which cleared outgoing mail for 8 more)
