Hello everybody^^

I was just wondering it there was a way to minimize or make the screen smaller... so that I could run FFXI... and surf Allakhazam.com ^^

It would help so that I wouldn't have to memorize the quest info or have to print out all that stuffs *Recycle Please*

This would also help while fishing.... argghh..... so boring sometimes ^^

Okay thanks everyone.

There is a way, but do realize if you try this you are breaking the EULA as far as SquareEnix is concerned and they can suspend or ban you account if they find out (however unlikely that may be) I don't know the sight for the program, but it allows you to minimize the screen so you can function other programs, however this program supposedly won't allow you to do anything ingame at the time.

I have not used it, nor will I use it so I don't know much about it or how it works, if you try it you do so at your own risk and be aware you may be risking you entire account if SE does somehow catch you.

Yes you can do this with third party software. But this is a clear violation of your user agreement and your account will be suspended or deleted if you’re caught using third party software.

Why is it considered bad?

It would be so much more convienent to be able to use other programs and do work at the same time.

Two reasons have been proposed in the past:

1. FFXI stores some sort of environment variable in the system memory. One could exploit this by changing environment variables while FFXI is running.

and, what I think is more likely,

2. At some point in the startup sequence (PlayOnline login, etc.), FFXI checks to see what programs are running in the background on your computer. Conceivably, Square could make FFXI refuse to run if a specific program (i.e., FISHINGBOT.EXE) was running in the background. Being able to minimize the program gives the user the ability to start new programs while FFXI is running, thus bypassing this security measure.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think the more immediate concern about people being able to minimize/multitask while playing the game is the following. After full screen mode is established, the game initiates the connection to the FF game server. All character data is stored on the server. If you were able to minimize/multitask while connected to the server you could run a console or terminal program and utilize the existing connection to the game server to attempt to hack the server. Restricting users to full screen mode prevents this from happening. As we all know, the first thing that happens when full screen mode is lost is that the server connection is terminated, and I believe this is why. It is a security measure to try to keep people from using their server connection in order to hack into character data. I wouldn't promote the use of this third party software, if this game get hacked it will suck.

Interesting theory (and maybe even correct), but it would be about as easy to have another system sniff the traffic (ala showeq) and inject traffic where necessary. Also you could leave task scheduler running to start a program as a service after you enter the game, or you could leave a telnet or SSH server running before starting the game then connect and launch other processes.

Well that sucks. I am a blogger and it would be very convenient to be able to switch back and forth between work and play. :(

You realise this thread is from almost 10 years ago, right?
You can now enable windowed mode in FFXI without any 3rd-party software.

Launch "Final Fantasy XI Config" (from your start menu next to where the Final Fantasy XI shortcut is), and tick "Start in Windowed Mode".
You may have to adjust your settings under the Screen Size tab to get everything to your preferred size & quality.
