Depends on your router. Did you check your manual? Most routers have an easy web interface (just plug the router's IP address in your web browser).

Also, do you know what port number you need to open up?

Most routers have a standard address.

Usually just go to 192.168.1.1 and that is your router (type that into a web browser) then use your admin name and password to access the control panel.

Next: Goto advanced. Then goto Port Forwarding.

Under port forwarding type in the port # that you want 'routed' to your computer. For FFXI here are the port numbers you may need to open up:

Port numbers that may be used by the PlayOnline server group:
-TCP 25, 80, 110, 443 or 50000 - 65535
-UDP 50000 - 65535

After you know what port it is type in the last 3 digits of your IP address that you want it routed to. 192.168.1.XXX.

To find out your IP address goto Start >>> Run then type in ipconfig for your IP address.

Save your settings and you're done! =)

if you are able to establish an initial connection to the game and your connection drops while playing it is not a port forwarding issue but most likely a hardware issue with one of your netwrok devices, router switch or the NIC card itself. It could also be an issue with the quality of your connection.

As long as yours is the only PC playing FFXI at a time behind your router, you can just forward those ports to 127.0.0.1. It might work with multiple pcs playing simultaneously as well, but I'm not sure.

This is the localhost address, and ethernet is a broadcast protocol so your PC will get the packets and say OH this is me!

No need to find your IP address (or if your IP address changes for some reason. i.e. you are playing after hours at work and they use DHCP and you only have one shot to play around with the router while the sysop is at a long lunch...

I had the same problem for a while too (disconnecting every 20 seconds after log on). If you call Square and tell them this, they all like "its your router nothing we can do."

Not sure if this applies to you, but just thought I should state it in case...
but my problem was I had a Cisco VPN client on my computer. Even though it was not connected, it was ******** my network settings. Watch for networking programs messing with you.

anyone know how to fix a linksys router

I have a linksys router and I noticed lots of connection problems for a while when I first started playing FF11. I upgraded the firmware because I hadn't done that in a while. In the first week I think my router crapped out once. Then I'd say in about the last month it did it once again, then again I think it was my ISP downing their networks without telling anyone, as usual. So umm, moral of the story is keep your firmware up to date on your router.

Also, on most routers they have something called "DMZ host". If you put the IP of your computer in there, it will forward all ports to your computer, effectively placing you outside of the network, on the internet side. It's a little more dangerous than static forwarding because none of the ports will be blocked by the router, but I was finding with all the forwarding I was having to do for games etc. it was becoming a major pain in the rear end.
