I did this in eq. i stood in ec(old skool) and people would give me their bet. they would /random 1000, and if they got over 599 i would double their money, but if they got below 599 i kept their bid. one night i remember making 20k off this one guy. he was kinda mad because he ran out of money, so he couldnt win it back. generally even with small bets and such, i still made a hefty profit, usually 1k/hour, im sure they can apply this to ffxi. dont know if you can /lot?

I remember the EQ casinos.... and quite frankly, the odds are so bad, that only a fool would take you up on them.

Now, that isn't to say that I feel badly for people like that, just that some people really do show just how stupid a person can be. /shrug

well, 599/1000 isnt THAT bad, like 40% chance to double your money is kinda good. house has to have upperhand anyway.

a few times, a friend and me(he got me into this) used to play vs eachother, was fun and we got pp off eachother.

This introduces the concept of gambling, which is not considered good for a game aimed at teenagers. There is a fine line between lotting for items (distributing the spoils of battle) and ante'ing up for a game of poker. Lotting is "no risk" since you aren't wagering something you own. Gambling.. involves wagering things you own.

That would open a large can of worms Square may not want to have to deal with.

There is a sort of casino-style thing in Norg, I think. Run by a goblin. But you can only play once per day.

They do have gambling int he game already (Guy in San d'Oria), and they do have the random thing.
Just type "/random 1000" if I remember right.
I've only done it on a couple of occasions =P

The Norg "Lucky Roll" is run by a male human, not a Goblin.

I put more thoughts to this and here the thoughts are. Auction house menu, lottery, game time weekly evernt that players can purchase lottery ticket with 3 numbers, like in many real 3 number lotteries, and since this is just a game a good pay out, like 100x for all 3 in exact order, 50x for 3 number not in exact order, and 10x for any of the 2 number in any order. And casino or gamble auction house menu, the same old casino or gamble games, like even or odd dice roll game, poker, black jack, roulette, slots. Also arena, like in dragon warrior 3 monster arena, where you can bet on monsters that are going to fight against each other with different pay out depending on the toughness of the monsters, and finally track, a race track like in final fantasy 7, chocobo race track, or monster race track.
